Linux in Xbox - Image 1Linux fans who own Xbox 360s may have already noticed this, but it's always good to share some cute factoids: inserting the word "Linux" in the Xbox Live motto section is a big no-no.

Typing in the word and entering it prompts the following message to pop-up: "Your motto contains inappropriate language. Please try again."

Other people tried typing in the names of other rival companies and consoles to see if the names are banned as well, like Nintendo (which was not blocked), It's also interesting to note that typing Windows and Microsoft are banned in Microsoft's online gaming service.

Well, there you have it, a strange mini easter egg from Xbox Live. It's just good knowing these little interesting things, don't you think so?

Because we may not use the word LINUX in our motto, it breaks the law of freedom of speach...

Pretty sure since it is a private pay service that they can censor what they want.

yea, once you sign a contract to a service, whether it is registering to comment, or just to use a p2p service you agree to give up some of your rights to follow the rules of the community such as profanity, etc.

Last time I checked it was to play games online, not to talk about linux

 » Linux, Windows Microsoft

There is no ulterior motive here, no conspiracy, get over it. I use both Linux and Windows daily, and use products from both MS and Sony, so I am no fan boy of either.

This was implemented to stop all these idiots who log in and pretend to be part of various support teams, in order to gain naive user's .net and xbl login passwords. Try experimenting, as there are hundreds of keywords that are blocked for this same reason.

   Re: o (Unregistered) - 2007-09-04
 » Exactly

A great many words are blocked on XBL to prevent spamming, scamming, and phising.

One thing I can't figure out tho, is why a series of zeros is blocked. As in, if you try to make your motto 0000000000 it will say you have inappropriate words in it.

FYI, if you play Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and try sending a text message to anyone containing the word, "Halo" it counts it as inappropriate language as well. Try it out if you dont believe me.

LOL MS you cease to amaze me, Why don't you make it so that people like MCS and Axo are banned as well.

It's also interesting to note that typing Windows and Microsoft are banned in Microsoft's online gaming service.

This fact shows that it is not a linux censorship . The service is provided for online gaming, any keywords that may add extra load to the servers through search and phishing will be blocked by any half decent network admin.

The comment that naive users may be taken advantage of is also a very valid point made by 'dig'

well anything that was mpart of hacking the xbox or 360 will be banned in their terminology

If they're gonna start using $#!T like that, they might as well make XBL free. WTF?
