*UPDATE* Llama decided to do a Part 2 to their little anatomy discussion. The new pics come from the back of the Elite motherboard, but by comparing these with the launch 360 motherboards, they've strengthened their suspicions that the Elite isn't using (yet) 65-nm technology.

The interesting part to most is the area under where the CPU connects we see lots of changes around here but its mostly just smaller components in a tighter space. The Ball Grid Array size has of course not changed so although we see a denser arrangement of smaller components we should not take this to mean that it is necessarily the 65nm core.

I think you just gave Peter Moore a heart attack. - Image 1Llama.com takes an Xbox 360 Elite and takes the stuffing out of it. Hey, it's all in the name of "being able to repair - or mod - the Xbox 360 Elite in the future (no matter what Microsoft's EULA may say)." Here are the bare essentials of what they found:
  • It uses the Hitachi GDR-3120L FK78 DVD drive, meaning "extracting the drive key and flashing the firmware of this unit won't be a problem!"
  • Llama's amused at "Microsoft's most creative measures to minimize the dreaded Xbox 360 3 flashing red lights 'Ring of Death' error caused by poor BGA connections of the CPU and GPU": ""The good ol' a dab (of glue) will do ya methodology"
  • The 120GB HDD uses a Fujitsu MHW2120BH drive. "Our initial attempts at dumping Sector 16 using The Specialist's hdhacker application was not a success... Without the Sector 16 you will not be able to upgrade your stock 20GB drive to 120GB the cheap way." Oh well, for now, you have to buy Microsoft.
  • The fan header's been switched from the 4-pin Molex to a standard 3-pin fan header connection. For those who're using the Talismoon Whisper Fan, Llama's now offering 3-4 pin adaptors.

Update #2: The Llama's Adventurers have released part three of their feature on the Xbox 360 Elite. As with the previous parts, their tests continue to reveal interesting comparisons between the original Xbox 360 and the Xbox 360 Elite.

Power: It was revealed that there is a slight drop of power usage in the Elite 360 Hitachi.

Noise: Their tests revealed that that when idle, the Xbox 360 Elite is quieter by a few decibels than the Xbox 360.

Vent Exhaust Temperature: Pretty much same for both consoles. They register at 128F.

Their conclusion? Here it is verbatim: "The Elite is a bit quieter, uses slightly less power but does not sport the 65nm die.  We have come to this conclusion for the following reasons. The power consumption is basically unchanged, the heat output is unchanged if this were the 65nm die it fails to address either of the items it was intended to improve."

Looks like LALA has not seen the other news yet about the 360 and the Elite are surpassing all expectations. And as for his crappy system here is some more bad news from Japan..

» Bu Ray and HD-DVD are NOTHING

Because the 360 has fantastic games and the Elite will just make things better, that is what a console is for NOT stupid Blu Ray Movies, and the DVD9 (which the 360 has) has wiped out any chance of Blu Ray or HD-Dvd taking over.

And do you realize if they make a cheap standalone Blu Ray drive it would KILL the PS3,as people would buy the independent drive rather than paying for a games console that also supports Blu Ray...

   Re: Chocolinx (Unregistered) - 2007-04-21
 » To dfr:

For one, Microsoft wouldn't be allowed to make standalone Blu-Ray players, seeing how they don't have the licence to do so, and even if they could it wouldn't be anywhere near as cheap as an HD-DVD. Lets not forget the HD-DVD player add-on for the 360 doesn't support 1080p. The cheapest a stand alone unit for Blu-Ray is around $600 come around June. The Blu-Ray laser alone cost somewhere upward $300. So in the end, it'd still cost somewhere near the price of the console.

Some might argue that 1080p isn't important and nor is HDMI, but now MS pushes out a new SKU of the 360 with HDMI for what reason? Oh because some games might actually want to use the added bandwidth.

» Cheap Blu Ray standalone will kill PS3

He is not talking about MS making a Blu Ray player, he is talking if ANY company make a cheap Blu Ray player it will badly effect sales of the PS3, whereas a cheap HD-DVD player will not affect the 360 in any way at all, MS are very clever...

 » XBOX 360 BluRay

Microsoft has said that they would make a BluRay add-on for the XBOX 360 if there is enough demand for it.

Hope they bring out a HD-DVD+BluRay compatible add-on player [that would rock] : )

Oh yeah - 4 all those ppl trying to knock the Elite - screw u - the Elite is awesome, i'm gonna get 1 + put my current X360 downstairs [just coz u'r PS3 sucks coz its games + online suck - dont mean u can go around bashing the #1 console]

thats my 4 cents

Re: yeah yeah yeah (Unregistered) - 2007-04-21
 » yeah

the only reason the 360 is on top base on sales is because like 5 out of ten of you have to buy 2 or 3 system because it breaks down mean while my ps3 has no problem an u can check that.

Microsoft said they'd add an integrated HD-DVD player to the 360 if there was enough demand. They have no intentions of EVER dealing with bluray

» No Solutions; More Garbage Prices

Buying the elite seems like such a waste of money though. What happend to Microsoft saying 20GB was enough for any Gamer. So they shove in a 120GB and add a huge premium. I rather just buy the core system. Microsoft could've easily got rid of the Premium and made the Elite the Same price. But they just want to suck out every piece of profit they can.

Personally I think they should lower the price down to the point where its at their cost, they'd probably sell a lot more system and push out a whole lot more software that way. In the long run it'd help them a lot, and probably could run neck to neck with the PS2 in terms of popularity, in maybe 5 years. Microsoft jacking the price of the Elite for no real reason is just unjustifible. I know one thing people want in it for sure is WiFi!

The biggest problem right now is the 360 is branded with problems.
-Ring of Death
-Over Heating
-Loud
Microsoft could easily fixed all these problems but it doesn't seem like the newly designed hardware for the Elite isn't going to help any of that. Sure you could mod the hell out of your 360 to overcome heat and noise, but the average owner isn't going to do it.

» PS3 is dead and you talk of the 360 launch console,(a year before the PS3 lame machine)

Complete anti MS crap, you know the 360 has none of your listed problems now, maybe when it was first released A WHOLE YEAR BEFORE THE PS3, the PS3 is failing all over the world and the 360.Elite and Wii are in high demand, LOOK at the latest news on QJ.

» No, sony isn't concerned about profit

Sony is giving gamers everything they want and just trying to break even, right?

Pay only $200 more, get "free" blu ray and wi-fi. Wow. How much more does it cost to get decent games developed? Aparently too much.

 » 65nm????

I noted in their examination of the system that they still are not able to verify if the CPU is on 65nm process yet ot not... If this baby turns out to be the 65nm that everyone's waiting for, then this system would be a winner. BUT - since the chips are glued down, I suspect that the 65nm version is still forthcoming...

Re: Mister Common Sense (Unregistered) - 2007-04-23
 » .

MS said the elite would have basically the same hardware as the other versions. The 65nm chips are not ready yet. I will upgrade to an elite when they are.
That should fix the reliability issues for good.

 » WHY????

Why do you people argue and complain so much. If you don't own a PS3 then don't worry about it. The truth is they are both great systems. Hardware-wise the ps3 is a lot better.....but the 360 is a lot more fun because it has more games. Seriously the 360 is only where it's at because it had a year head start. We should just wait a couple of years to have this argument. Also....I just bought a 360 and they are still loud. It's kinda scary and sounds like crap next to my ps3.....but yet my 360 is played a lot more than my ps3. Anyway it's all about the games......and I hope we can see more original games soon.
