GameSpot has some worthwhile information for all of you folks looking at the incoming fall update. According to Microsoft, the use of hard drive installation should improve load times by 30 percent. That tidbit of information showed up near the end of a GameSpot primer on the new Xbox Experience. Here's the quote direct from GameSpot: One of the not-so-cosmetic changes in the fall update will be the ability to let you play your games directly from the hard disk. The new feature will let users install all of the game content directly onto the hard drive to improve game load times. Microsoft reports that it has seen a 30 percent improvement in load times in internal testing.... Another side benefit of having games installed on the hard disk is reduced noise, since the optical disc no longer needs to spin up. However, you will still need to have the game disc in your optical drive while you're playing it, presumably as a piracy check. As a bit of added information, Microsoft also appeared to go out of its way to tell reportes that the full Devil May Cry 4 hard disk install was 10 minutes. Comparatively speaking, GameSpot reports that the installation took twice as long when GameSpot did its own installation tests on the PS3. All in all, the upcoming fall update looks like something very worthwhile for Xbox users, both in terms of a new presentation and in terms of overall functionality. Keep checking QJ for more updates on the new Xbox Live Experience as it becomes available. UPDATE: Also available on the GameSpot primer on the upcoming Xbox Live Experience is some information on the implementation of a medal system to Xbox Live. Here's the description GameSpot gives regarding medals: The MyXbox section will give you a central location to edit personal items. From here you'll be able to add pictures, edit your profile, and view your achievements. Microsoft will also institute a new medal system so you can show off your most recent achievements. Medals are basically graphical representations of achievements, kind of like graphical badges or trophies. It's not exactly a big addition to the user interface experience, but it should be a welcome addition to achievement fans out there. Related Articles: |

Any bets on the fact that once installs are on Xbox, it will suddenly be a perfectly acceptable process, regardless of the fact that it will likely take even longer than standard installs on PS3.
Any bets?
On some PS3 games installation is mandatory, on 360 it is an optional feature.
it can't become standard.
why? because there are still Core/Arcade users out there. you can't bank on a installation process... if some of your consumers don't have a place to install it.
XBox360 games have no choice but to be optional.
but, for those that can do the installation... it's a good thing to do so... like others have said, once installed, it cuts down on load times. so long as you don't constantly uninstall/delete then reinstall and play for more than a few hours before going to the next game... you should see benefits in it.
it says that the install of devil may cry 4 took twice as long on the PS3
Games like GTA4 will greatly benefit from this as the game is always streaming from the disc, playing from the hard drive will help speed up loading times and reduce pop ups on the map when going at fast speeds. I for one am looking forward to this.
gta4 will benefit greatly from this!
Exactly!!!
Can't wait to see how Unreal 3 engine games run from the HDD - Mass Effect, Gears, etc...
In my experience, the PS3 generally loads games faster than the 360.
It sort of balances out; the 360 will have optional full game installs to increase speed, while the PS3 has mandatory partial game installs to increase speed. In either case, you've got to have the disc in; so now you can have part or all of a game on the HDD with good speed on both systems.
ELDERSCROLLS 4 OBLIVION! I wonder, if this does 30 percent faster, I wonder how fast this game would be.
Alot of Xbox 360 games have bad loading times for me.
Okay maybe NOT ALOT but some are god awful like Sonic the Hedgehog, now that needs this.
But Oblivion, wonder?
You will certainly see reduced load times in Oblivion on interior/exterior and fast travel transitions. Another thing to be aware of is that Oblivion streams a lot. My fiancee plays Oblivion a lot and she complains about occasional pausing while the game loads to keep up with her while on the world map. Her character has ridiculously high agility and sometimes moves too fast for the streaming to keep up. I would expect HDD installing to eliminate streaming lag for her. I'll definitely be installing Oblivion to my HDD as much as she plays it.
I spend the weekend playing Crackdown and noticed that the DVD drive chatters almost constantly whether my agent is moving or just standing still.
Pretty much all streaming games are worth installing to the HDD just for the sake of reducing wear on the DVD drive.
hopefully it fixes the freezes on halo 3 certain times.
Like Loa...checkpoint kind of thing lol
hopefully it will be a good safeguard against disc's getting scratched. If reading the disc is just anti-piracy that is.
load times never bothered me, something happening to my $60 game to make it un-playable on the otherhand, does.
I don't think many 360 Premium owners have considered this but realistically you will only be able to install one game at a time on a 20GB HDD. A brand new 20GB HDD only gives you 13.9GB space for storage (due to M$ installed components/software).
Devil May Cry 4 is quite a big game, so if you intended to play a few games over the space of a week or a month, you will either have to play them from the DVD or delete that data and sit through another 10 minute installation for every game.
GTA4 is slightly smaller than DMC4 and takes up approx 6.36GB of space. If you have a few arcade titles and lots of music stored on the HDD, you're out of space for another installation.
So while you will feel the benefits that the PS3 gets from many of it's games (like GTa4), you're being forced into either buying a larger HDD which is still nowhere near as big as what's available on the PS3 and costs nearly 2x as much as a 320GB or delete all other content from the HDD.
Elite or owners of a 120GB HDD are slightly better off, but you will ultimately experience longer loading tames if you play a multitude of games and go back to them time and time again.
Which is why Xbox 360s will ship with 60GB, instead of 20.
there will be an option to buy a 360 with a 60GB HDD but the 20GB will still be available to buy, just at a lower price. How many million 360 owners are there with 20GB HDD or a Core/Arcade machine?
Sure they can go out an buy a 60GB or 120GB HDD but at what price? The 360's 120GB HDD costs 3x (I had a look since my last post) as much as 2.5" 320GB SATA. M$ need to do something about the price.
It's optional, you don't have to install the games on your HDD if you don't want to. Think about it if you own both a PS3 and a 360 (like I) compare the loading times on both consoles and see the difference. The 360 loading times outrun the PS3's version by 2 mins. You know what 2 mins. is to a gamer lol, it's a lifetime. It's a great feature that is optional. As a general gamer I can't wait for this feature because, I in the other hand thought outside the box and hacked my way to a larger HDD so this isn't a bother. Since you guys can invest some much energy in arguing, why not do the same and stop complaining.
@ chessboxer - Your right about the cost and the sizes of the HDD but your still missing the point. The PS3 HDD installs are in some games not optional hint ("MGS4") which in results make you have to purchase a larger HDD. As I say I respect your opinion tho.
I forgot to mentiont the load times are based on both versions of GTA4
Comparing games between platfrms are pretty useless really, If you have multiplatform games, you are sure to see a big difference as to which is much faster since well....almost all games the that are multiplat, they base it on 360 structure then ports to the ps3 or vice versa (which is the rare cases). Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've read and seen past couple of game releases, it's been like that so.. that's my understanding of it.
