Ó

Is yours working? - Image 1Xbox 360's failure rate is gaming's holy grail no more. Numbers from all sources are coming up - retailers giving their estimates and users offering their educated guesses. In Microsoft's repair center in Havant, 1,500 to 2,500 units are reported to be sent back daily.

Not only does that shed a light on Microsoft's dark secret, but also reveals that there are some fishy processes going on when UK owners send their consoles back for repair. Lee Sherman testified to 360-Gamer.com about his frustrating experience.

This unsatisfied gamer suffered three weeks without his 360, no thanks to the not-so user-friendly customer reps who weren't able to help. Constant calls asking when he'll get it back only gave him the answer it'll be “returned shortly.” Unable to resist, he asked for the repair center's number but was told that there are no phones directly to where his machine was.

Upon investigation, he found out that the person on the other line did indeed lie - repair center had a number. What's worse, it was in Prague and not in Havant. Lee stated:

A shocking statistic we found out though is that between 1,500 to 2,500 consoles get sent to Havant by three UPS lorries per day, to then be shipped to Prague for repair. [We] phoned up Nora the [customer service] supervisor again, who then admitted my console was in Prague and hadn’t been looked at yet – she seemed amazed that we knew!

360-Gamer also found an old post further supporting this claim. Forum user LordBrown posted on Xbox.com last June 23:

I just spoke to the customer support people because my 360 has been gone since the 8th of June. Apparently because of the backlog in Havant they’re sending 360s to repair centres outside the UK! And that because of this Microsoft are legally allowed an additional ten days to get your 360 back to you.

Do note that we haven't confirmed credibility of these guys. So 'til we hear any official statement from Microsoft on this (if they do give out one), let's leave this one on the rumor mill.

I dont quite understand why trading stadards in the UK get involved, im sure if they got enough complaints then Microsoft would either have to sort out the console or face having the console retricted from selling in the UK.

I know that I am getting my 360 as soon as Game.co.uk have some good deals on instead of just spiderman3 and forza which I do not like. But when I buy my 360 I am getting a 3 year extended warranty and the intercooler, this way im guarenteed a 360 for 3 years which is what any console should last.

» Trolling PS3 fantards, what is better?

A expensive system that is only out 7 months and does not have widespread overheating problems, but has very little to do on it? Still only 2 exclusive games, only about 30 games total, big, useless system. When the inevitable disc read errors start appearing will they even be repairable? All sony systems got disc read errors after 2-4 years, when will your POS3? Do they even have a repair center, or will you just shell out another $600?

OR...

A real life gaming system with the best games available NOW, with a small chance of overheating and being fixed free under warranty? This is Microsoft's problem, and they are doing plenty to take care of it.

Then shut the f*ck up.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-06-27
 » .

Up until recently, I had no idea there was widespread problems with the slim PS2. This is because sony keeps any of their product defects under tight wraps. They don't offer any repairs really. Buy a new one, that's the repair. Just a 90 day warranty there. All sony systems have been suseptible to defects, just most of them do not appear until 2-4 years for owning the system. Just wait c0cky PS3 owners, soon your near useless PS3 will be a real useless PS3 and sony will not fix your system because they never did for my PS2, I did it myself.

They had so much extra time to develop the PS3 and it cost so much more, it would be hard to screw up. Look at that case! It's huge! No wonder it has no overheating problems. No wonder it isn't abused as much. It is not portable. It has no games, so why bring it to your friend's house? It also explains the easy scratch finish, sony wants you to treat it with prestine care. You can't stack anything on top to block the cooling vents. You can't mess up the disc mechanism by moving it with a disc inside (people should know that by now but don't.) The PS3 still just isn't worth it.

What the hell does "everyone goes through this" mean? I've had two consoles so far, one launch system that I upgraded to an Elite, and neither had/have any problems.

Lol @ the above comment, if you really think every single game on the 360 is average at best then you are not a gamer, sorry. And you would have to say the same thing about the PS3, since most of them are multi-paltform (and are usually better on 360). The 360 has at least one amazing game is almost every genre, what planet are you from?

   Re: Quixand - 2007-06-27
 » oh please

racers and fps are the genre which requires the least brain usage to play and that's all the 360 has even worth discussing...

any other genre the playstation has got the best game in that genre... include racing to that with Gran Turismo... u can keep ur Gears Of War (amazing how it is the only worthwhile game on the 360 when it's already nearing two years in the market) and fps is a genre meant for the pc... it's sad if ur console has fps as it's trademark.

Almost 16 months now, no problems. I play the s*it out of my 360, I take care of it. I have a fan-cooled entertainment center. Believe me, it works. Average games, HA! Then WTF is Motorstorm and Resistance? The most awesome games ever? Give me a f*cking break! I wouldn't buy either of those games for $20 greatest hits. You pay $60 for them, they are best sellers. You are desperate for games, because you have none. You are in serious denial.

There's no point in a blu ray player, dual format players are the way to go at this point so I'm waiting.

Protein folding hasn't done s*it for cancer so far, but it's killing the environment using 400w electric with tens of thousands of people doing it.

PS3 linux has proven to be useless, as well as the browser if you have a PC (who doesn't)

Quixand - Why do you do nothing but troll all day? Seriously though, why do you care about the 360 so much? All you do is cry about how the 360 sux yet you waste such a great amount of your day bashing it. Listen, you're not going to convince anyone that the PS3 is better, we're all happy that you FOLD@Home all day, really, we are.

When I am shopping for dinner or banging my girlfriend I think "Thank GOD that Quixand is Folding right now what would the world do without FOLDING?". I am glad you spent a large amount of money to have a brick sit in your living room doing nothing but burning electricity and FOLDING.

Let me ask you something, when you meet up with your buddies to play magic do you all brag to each other about how much you've folded? Do you guys have Folding competitions? Can I give you advice? When you go on your first date, hopefully with a female that isn't related, don%u2019t for the love of GOD talk about Folding! She will not care! I PROMISE!

Now that I%u2019ve made it clear that no one cares about folding except the PS3 crowd, let%u2019s talk about games. See the problem is you%u2019re so blinding by product name that you have never given any of the 360 games a chance. Which when you think about it is very sad. I believe that if you%u2019re a true gamer you%u2019ll give every system a chance, not just the one you go to bed with.

I myself wouldn%u2019t mind a PS3, but not yet. I have to wait until the price seems justified. So, instead of being a troll how about you help the gaming community and stop being a douche.

So true! If you can't play games for 2-3 weeks because your 360 broke, it's still better than not being able to play games on a PS3 because sony won't make them and they blame the 3rd party developers for "choosing not to release them." How weak is that?

i mean come one how many ps3's have had a fault? ok a few disk drive problems (but if u imported one its easy to fix if u dont care about warranty).

   by Killfox (Unregistered) - 2007-06-26
 » Shame on you MS.

This is why i dont want to send my 360 in. I wont see it for like 3 years. Maybe microsoft should have made a reliable console. Xbox seemed pretty reliable. Now they have been adding extra heat sinks.

   by Vietone - 2007-06-26
 » ...

It is the design of the case itself.

The heat sinks aren't the problem but they help with the flaw of the internal design.

The system is poorly designed and they wont admit it. If anyone watched the special on the Xbox360 before it was launched in the US, they had a tour of the Xbox division where they had several prototype designs on a shelf. The person mentioned that they finally decided on the design a few months before production.

Thats less then a few months to test for reliability which is impossible. If anything, they probably didn't test it at all. The issue is the GPU, it does not get the cooling it needs and is offset to the fans and does not get the proper cooling. This is why the new heatsinks have a heat pipe going to the CPU side to compensate.

I stated this fact as soon as I saw people with red lights and the pictures of disassembled Xbox360's. I mentioned it months ago and people called me an idiot who didn't know anything.

On to the subject. The reason they are probably delayed is they are waiting for the new heat sinks. That is my best guess anyway. What is the point in fixing it when theres a strong chance of the system going bad again. They are probably waiting for the new designs.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-06-27
 » wow

Vietone said something halfway intelligent for once!

Probably the biggest problem with the 360's design is they just tried to cram too much into a really small case. The CPU heatsink is great, large size, copper is a great heat conductor, heat pipes carry heat away from the CPU, lots of fan area. The GPU heatsink is under the DVD drive and offset from the fans slightly. Also it is made of aluminum and has no heat pipes and is much shorter (the old design.) This is adequate in ideal conditons, but many people do not ventilate their systems well or use them in a cool environment. I think this may also be causing some of the DVD drive problems as the heat is transferred to the DVD drive case. Standing the unit up partially blocks critical intake passages.

MS is taking care of this problem the best they can. They are not intentionally screwing people over, this is a design oversight and it is costing them more than anyone else.

I'm not concerned about my system because I added the XCM fan upgrade and switched to Arctic Silver heatsink paste. My 360 has been proven reliable and will last forever. Even if the PS3 is so far reliable out of the box, if there's no games and just a blu ray trojan horse it's a rip off in my book!

MS will eventually get all of these problems resolved in new systems, since the cause is basically the same problem.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2007-06-27
 » You know...

Even then I have a hard time beleiving all this crap. It's obvious there are alot of failures but I think people thinking it will DEFINATELY happen to them is BS.

The reason I say this is I have a launch 360, that according to MS was built in the "Defect" launch window. I played it 10+ hrs a day last summer in 30-40C (90-100F) degree weather, with no air conditioning...no probs.....played it hardcore through the fall, winter and now back into summer, where I am now in a 3rd story apt (was in a 1st story last summer) and have played it about 30-35 C weather as it hasn't gotten to the peak of heat yet....no probs....however, my original Xbox has been overheating in the weather just streaming divx movies.

Surely if it was a fatal flaw, inherent in the design of the case and the lack of heatsinks then mine should have failed by now, but it hasn't.......

I really do think that for the most part the systems are fine, but they are just random defects and people are blowing these cases out of proportion in spite of MS and their machine, as there is really absolutely nothing else to complain about so they have to find something to make it seem lesser then the PS3.....

Oh and out of now 10 people I know with 360s....and about 50 on my friends list.....none had problems, so going by what I KNOW i've experienced, it's solid.....take everything on the net with a case of salt...

Charlie Brown thinks to himself...."she really is going to let me kick it this time."

Charlie Brown winds up his foot, the football is still there, he starts his foot going foward and at the last possible moment Lucy pulls the ball out from his foots path and Charlie Brown swings and misses and falls flat on his back. And I have to say that while I play my Xbox more (I do enjoy Gears more than Resistance) the PS3 is definitely a better design.

To the guy that said the case is huge, put a PS3 next to a 360, they're around the same size, especially when you factor in the power pack.

If MS would just redesign the form factor for better airflow or quality components, it could be a far better scenario. But as it stands, I'm pretty sure my PS3 will outlast my 360 in quality.

XBOX 360s get a lot more usage. Ya know, with games being available and all.

To people who say they leave their PS3s on all the time, that is minimal system usage. Only the CPU is being used to fold protien. The blu ray drive and GPU is not used at all. That isn't an accurate comparison when 360 owners are playing graphically intense games 99% of the time their systems are on.

They claim their new policy is to do everything they can to fix YOUR xbox when you send it in, instead of always just sending a refurb so they meet their quick turnaround deadlines... but with so many consoles coming in (I dont doubt the numbers in this article), its got to be impossible to do anything but exactly that... throw yours in the pile and send you a refurb off the stack. The sad thing is they eventually send your brick back out to some other poor chap. (Im on my 4th, all refurbs)

 » What Games?

Proponents of the 360 are always saying, 360 has the best games and more of them. My questiong is...What games!?!

Let's see...There is Gears of War, and...Umm...Halo 3? Have you seen the trailers? It's hard to tell the difference between Halo 2 and 3.

Bioshock is not looking very impressive, as fo the most recent videos. Too Human has no launch date (still!), do to major frame rate issues. Blue Dragon?...Come on. Does anyone seriously think that it will stand up to Final Fantasy XIII? Forza?...It looks comparable to GTHD, wich is just a demo to hold us over until Grand Turismo 5 hits. What other outstanding exclusives are there?

I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm just trying to understand.

 » What?

Are you kidding me?

Even when watching the Rooster Teeth video (if you have a 360 download it from the Marketplace) you can see a huge difference. And I mean HUGE. It is hard to see when you look at them days apart, when they use the Halo 2 engine in one scene and then use the Halo 3 engine immediately after it is freaking impressive!

I showed it to my girlfriend, because I thought she would get a kick out of the teabagging scene. Well, she said it took her a second or two to realize she was watching something that was computer generated. She thought that they were people standing in plastic suits talking.

If you haven't seen it, and therefore have no idea, which I would assume you didn't play the beta and so you have no idea, don't open your *****ing mouth!!!!

Many people are excusing the sub-par hardware by saying that there are better games on the 360. Makes no sence I know, but it is happening. Of course, they are attacking the PS3 at the same time.

i own 3 systems and no problem at all. this articles are usually made up by ps3 fanboy who are frustrated they bought a system with no games and don't want to see the 360 succeed.

even sony is known to pull stunts like this. like when whey were caught with a fake movie review site that gave all the sony movies good review and every other movie a bad one.

1500 to 2500 per day? Really?
Over ten days that is 15,000 to 25,000 consoles. Over 100 days, that will be 150,000 to 250,000. I can't imagine that many consoles coming in at once. How many people do they have working on those consoles? In order to repair and send them back in the required time, they would have to have about 200 or 300 repair people working on those machines. That would obviously be a HUGE cost to MS.

If the failure rate is that high, I would think there would be a class action lawsuit against MS. I think that the problems with faulty machines, when found and identified, are adjusted during the next manufacturing. Someone probably misheard and something completely different was said.

» Why is everyone at war?

Why does everyone have to feel that they have to defend their console? THESE ARE MACHINES. A 360 does not feel pain when someone says it is crap. Yes,I understand you don't want to feel that you have wasted your money on buying a console, but at the moment, does it look like any of them is going to bite the dust? I think not.
In addition, If you worried that whether or not Sony or Microsoft are going to lose the console "wars", it doesn't mean that there are going to no more consoles made by that company in the future. Microsoft will be able survive the loss and Sony is a giant in the Manufacturing Media Industry (Whatever you want to call it). And if one does lose and end up like Sega, they will still make/fund the games we love.
Now back to the point. IMO it is a shame that Microsoft's 360s are poorly designed. I have a friend whose 360 went bust within the first month using it. This is one of the reasons why I'm reserving myself from buying a next gen console. Each one has it's good and bad points. I am on the verge of getting a PS3 since i am a KILLZONE and Ratchet fan.

[Please don't call me a "F***ING RETARD" without reasoning, I'll be glad to hear any intelligent criticism :) ]
