Smaller and smaller... eat me?Whatever the reason for Microsoft to move to 65nm tech-manufactured chips, it ain't happening any time soon. DigiTimes reports that the Taiwan-based chip manufacturer slated to manufacture them 65nm chips has pushed back plans to make said chips by at least one quarter.

Neither Microsoft Taiwan nor Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing, the chip manufacturer, would comment on said report. This delay means that it won't be until the middle of 2007 at the earliest that we'll be seeing 65nm-made chips for the Xbox 360. Which means that it won't be until the second half of 2007 (again, at least) that that next generation of the next generation (a sub-generation? Or shall we call it Xbox 360.1?), running off the new chips, will roll off the production lines either.

who cares? why is this even news worthy? the uninformed are probably sitting there thinking that they are getting screwed because their current 360's are outdated/obsolete or somehow slower than the newer ones. the only benefit is in power consumption. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if you write a story like this, you should damn well explain WHAT 65NM EVEN MEANS TO AVOID ANY CONFUSION...

i am so lost... not to bash, but please re-read what you wrote... i couldn't really understand...

but i did get the bottom line... no new chips for 360 anytime soon... gotcha!

Microsoft was planning on making smaller chips to make the system less quiet and make less heat. It apparently is getting pushed back.

thanks for that clear up...

yet i can understand less heat
but less quiet? meaning more noise?

» Ill tell you what it does

By making the transistors smaller, they need less voltage to run them, therefore the chip will output less heat.

Will this make the Xbox360 quiet?
No chance, even by decreasing the heat output by a small amount, the Xbox360 is still using small, High RPM fans.

Until the fans are replaced with versions that are more quiet, then the noise the Xbox360 will make wont change, this will make it so that the system is more tolerable to heat.

From my understanding it's the DVD Drive spinning at 12x that generates most of the noise. Modified firmware fixes that problem :) my 360 hardly makes any noise.

» The DVD drive is added noise.

For instance the DVD drive is not always spinning, but the Xbox360 still is loud.

If you pause a game you can clearly hear the Xbox360, while the same can not be said about the PS3. My Xbox360 and every Xbox360 I have seen is loud because of those two small fans that microsoft decided to place in the system.

I have standards, I build PCs for lots of people, If your stressing a system and the fans are loud enough to be heard across a small room, then its too loud. The only time I heard the PS3 fan is when I purposely place it in a warm spot and it got hot enough that the fan was running in high mode and could be clearly heard, other then that, I have yet to hear it after leaving it on for an entire day.

 » DVD Drive Noise

its the crappy DVD drive spinning @ 12x that's making the load (like burning a CD/DVD) noise.

the 2 fans @ the rear of the console also output a large amount of heat + noise. cant wait 2 get a PS3 + compare the 2 :D
