Resident Evil 5 is 'new direction' for series, says Capcom - Image 1

How many Resident Evil games have there been now? Around eight in the main series and countless others in spin-offs, yeah? Better prepare yourself. Capcom says that all of that was only just "act one" of the Resident Evil saga.

Last month, Resident Evil producer Jun Takeuchi hinted that Resident Evil 5 (PS3, Xbox 360) will be the "last of its kind" and that RE6 will be a reboot. Capcom's Chris Kramer sheds more light on this, explaining that RE5 is a kind of "waving goodbye" to many of the the storylines and characters in previous games:

It’s a really good time for new players to jump in, because what we’re doing is kind of waving goodbye to a lot of storyline elements from, essentially, act one of the Resident Evil franchise.

Resident evil 5 is really setting the franchise up for what’s going to happen now going forwards, so establishing new characters and storylines, and pretty much a new direction for the game.

If you’re late to the party and you haven’t been playing the games for the past 15 years, all you need to know is that the game’s a lot of fun and just filled with action, so you don’t have to worry about the plot, as we’re kind up picking up and starting afresh.

Here's hoping they actually put the horror back into the franchise.

Yes oh man do I wish that dark atmosphere comes back. And if they don't make this a PS3 exclusive then at least make it a multidisc for the 360. RE5 was so stupid. I didn't know one f****** area had so many twist and turns. Disc size was definitely an issue for that game. Each level or area in that game was so small yet it takes a while to get through because things are always in the way so you always have to go around.

"..it takes a while to get through because things are always in the way so you always have to go around. "

Duh, that's the whole point of the game. Ever played Half Life? Hell, ever played duke nukem?

Both games that did not use near a full DVD.... you're point ?

I'm only pointing out certain areas of the game where there isn't even a puzzle and the next area is right in front of you, yet you have to go all the way around just to make it seem long. I only complain because I want the new RE to be fantastic. Hopefully that reboot also brings back the puzzles.

And Shatterdome what the hell you talking about? The 360 Version used 7.29GB which is it's max.

WHAT THE F**** are you talking about Shatterdome. I'm not talking about those games being on the 360 Or the ps3. I'm talking about the games ITSELF in it's full glory.

Who needs higher polygon count anyways when Doom 95 ruled everything.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2009-03-16
 » I am saying....

that we are no longer in 1995, or 2002, or whatever year you look back on as the best in gaming.....

HL2, Duke nukem....Doom 3d....didn't use a full DVD because they were not invented or because it was not needed.....nowadays it is...you know, over a decade later....

Papajag....I was trying to help ya out, because I beleive future games need to start using more that 7 gigs of space as well......buddy was saying "what about these games" well those games are old, so who cares....MGS4 showed by using mass amounts of uncompressed data you can have a native 1080p game that looks amazing. Remember when you compress data, you have to uncompress it....and that takes system resources.....

As for HL2 using 7.8 gigs....ya on 360 it does, when it comes with every expansion for the game.....the orginal HL2 for PC is only around 2.5-3 gigs....

   Re: gammy69er - 2009-03-18
» Does it matter how big it is... Well in some cases.

Yeah Shatterdome, the "Original HL2" was, not the Orange Box though - ok, for PS3 and 360, they added slightly better images and skins for the environments, but that was the only thing to ramp it up to that - Also, think of all the updates over the years that would have been patched in too. so 7 gig is not too bad really.

But here is my point after that rant, DVD is Dying - Slowly but surely. People and Programs now require more space - i wouldn't expect it to be too far for needing 2 Blurays for a game, MGS4 was 44 gig, but content wise, did it have as many hours of play time as FFX - or even FFVII. Granted, the Size of those games was not Huge (shade over 2 Gig each) but add in High def and a cry for more content for your $$, and it will happen.

Wonder what M$ will do, maybe the First 20 DVD game, get through a mission then change disc ;P

Since this is goodbye, they should add Leon, Claire, & Ada as playable characters in Mercenaries.... or at least their costumes as DLC.

   Re: CarbineHero14 - 2009-03-16
 » Agreed

They should definitely do that.

Reboot and "Act Two" are 2 different things.

Reboot is from Batman (Keaton-Clooney) to Batman (Begins & DK)

Act Two would be like Star Wars 1-3 to Star Wars 4-6 (or something similar)

 » "RE6 will be a reboot."

By reboot, I'm hopign they mean go back to actual horror & old school gameplay. I've played RE5(Not the demo) and the game isn't even hard on Veteran & it's basically go from Point A to point B. Your only real puzzle is finding money/weapons..

   Re: Master Chef - 2009-03-16
» Yeah they really dumbed it down

It's pretty much just an action game, no horror or survival involved. Hell you don't even need to find money and ammo, the addition of chap select lets you replay chap 1 for as much ammo as you need and chap 4-1 for as much money as you need.

   Re: Tydeus - 2009-03-20
 » Jill sandwich.

RE4 was a reboot from the original series. Hopefully by reboot, they mean back to survival horror like you said. Co-op gameplay could still work, but make it more of an independant path for each player, maybe meeting up for a few minutes to unlock something and then parting ways again. Being on your own adds to the tension or w/e making it even scarier :D

Also, bring back those walking zombies! those where scarier too lol running ones just seems like any other action game. Oh and yeah we need puzzles.. and Jill :)

» I am still on the sidelines for 5

I have played almost all the Resident Evil games up until now and 5 hasn't proven to me that it is worth the buy for $60 after seeing the videos and playing the demo. Sure Resident Evil 4 & 5 took gameplay to another level but not far enough in my opinion for 5. By now we should have run and gun gameplay and Capcom pulling the messed up move making you pay for dlc stuff they should have included in the game from the start. Hell, if it's any indication of what they did with Street Fighter 4, the extra content is probably on the disc but make you pay to unlock it. The reason I say that is that because the Street Fighter 4 dlc was so small that for all it gave, it had to really be on the disc.

COME ON CAPCOM, YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS!!!

   Re: Shatterdome - 2009-03-16
 » uhhh....

if you don't want to pay for it.....don't. The DLC in SF4 does not affect the gameplay whatsoever.

Beleive me, capcom and every other company would have been doing this durring the days of SNES if SNES had a broadband adapter, HDD and most people had broadband....

Companies want to make money and it's only going to get worse in the future....so get used to it.

   Re: Master Chef - 2009-03-17
 » couldn't agree more

With that last line. This is only going to get worse, probably much worse, because it's proven that it generates quite a bit in sales. Expect expansions to be available on the same day as release of the game soon

So just ignore it GUN, it can't be fought

 » damn them

damn capcom those money grabbing con men needless to say i will be buying any dlc for resi 5 and those of you who dont like 5 thats ok because thats just your personal oppion luckily we live in a world were no one really cares about others opinions when it comes to makeing decisions obviously those few are fans of resi 4 and know nothing about the history and story of resi

   Re: Tydeus - 2009-03-20
 » obviously

lol it's obviously their opinion, everything's an opinion.. but thats just my opinion *cough* RE5 could've been better but it was still a good game! I'll be buying any DLC that comes out for RE5. i.e. the new modes, hopefully new characters and maps too. Wouldn't hurt to have a game mode that features a story and allows you to choose one of the unlocked characters to play as.. but thats wishful thinking. At least give us the Arklay Mansion map.
