On Australia's Coogee Beach Xbox 360 fans and water balloon enthusiasts have broken the world water fight record. More than 50,000 water balloons were thrown in the attempt by gamers from all over the world. The Water Balloon Challenge was set up to celebrate the record-breaking launch of the Xbox 360 console in Australia. It also helped raise money for the local Coogee Surf Life Saving Club. A total of 2921 participants threw 55,000 water balloons, approximately the same number of Xbox 360 consoles that have been sold in the country since launching on March 23, 2006, with many of them travelling from as far afield as Latin America, Europe, Asia and the United States to take part in the event.

The previous world record was held by Spain, where 2677 people threw 50855 balloons in 2005. “This was a great chance for us to do something fun for all of those thousands of Australians who helped make the Xbox 360 launch such a success,” said David McLean, Regional Director, Xbox Australia and New Zealand. “It was a great chance for everyone to jump in and remember the joy and fulfillment that comes from playing games of any kind.” (yes you have to love how he even managed to squeeze 'Jump In' into that bit of PR).

 » I was there!

It was awesome, just before it started it was looking like they weren't going to get enough people to break the record, but we did.

People wore green and grey shirts and they took pictures from a helicopter of us lined up on the beach forming the XBOX 360 logo, looked pretty good.

It cost AU$20 to get in, but you got a bag of balloons, goggles, some 360 promotional gear and a full XBOX 360 game (your choice of PDZ, PDR or Kameo) as well as a Kiosk Disc.

Now all I need is to sell my PS2 and get a 360 :)
