Mass Effect - Image 1

Remember all that hoopla last year about the sex scene in Mass Effect (Xbox 360, PC)? That's what happens when clueless critics weigh in on a subject they know less than nothing about. That episode also raised the question of whether or not scenes of a sexual nature have a place in videogames. Here's BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk's take on the matter.

"I don't think they need to have them, I think that in certain types of games it makes sense to have them," said Zeschuk in an interview with CVG. "It's interesting because I think the Mass Effect thing was completely over-blown. There wasn't even really nudity; it was like the side of a leg. I think some of the press took huge advantage of the situation. The reality was that it was the kind of stuff you'd see on evening television."

Zeschuk also added that in Mass Effect's case, the inclusion of the scene stemmed from the fact that the game was a "sophisticated, mature experience."

"I think from our perspective we want to reflect real human relationships. If you're trying to have a relationship with a character we want to reflect that and the impact of the connection with that character. And if that involves some sort of intimate scenes, we want to provide those for the player."

Not to a conservative they don't. Then again, anything not related to church doesn't make sense to a conservative.

Well it would be much better if they implied that the characters had had sex instead of showing it.

Seriously, CG characters having sex?

I'm over 18. I think I can handle it. If your kid can't handle it, don't buy him the game. Parents being responsible FTW?

ZOMG BEWBIES!

I'm surprised the GoW series hasn't been slammed by the media for not only the nudity, but for being an incredibly violent game as well.

We getting close to photo realistic graphics and very realistic character physics, so i bet before long they'll be making mmorpg games where you can visit rooms for a good orgy, and i don't need to tell anyone about the darker side of this future.

They already do make games like that, there was one in the news a while ago, i don't remember what it was called though. It wasn't an rpg though, more like the second life, but nude. It's AO of course.

Where's the dark side here?
I can't say that would interest me but elements of the population "swingers", definitely would go for it. Orgies are not illegal as long as everyone is consenting.

I hate it when they compromise and make low-poly boobs.

» Isn't having a sex more normal to do than killing?

I don't understand why it's just so big deal to have a few sex scenes in a video game in Western countries. Games can have ultra-violence and sick-killings, but when it comes to much more normal thing called sex we have a scene. I would rather have a mature video game with a little nudity than over-violence.

   Re: EugeneE - 2009-07-11
 » I agree

I agree. But the problem is that there are too many people in the USA (I live in the USA) who go up in arms if there is even a sex scene in a game but they allow ultra-violence in the games.

Also, the game is rated M so it means that the game isn't for kids but there are parents who buy M rated games and then go up in arms when there is a sex scene in the game. But these parents don't get the fact that the M rated games are made for adults, not kids.

I own and finished Mass Effect and it's a very good game. One of the best games that I have played in a while, Bioshock is also a very good game.

over-reaction as usual... call me an otaku or watever but occasionally i played some h-games with way more explicit content... this is like the gta scandal (remember the mod that makes gtaIV more adult? lol~)

but i do remember the one that made gat san andreas more adult
   by hush404 - 2009-07-09
 » Yeah

It worked and fit in perfectly in Mass Effect, was done tastefully and there wasn't even nudity to speak of. Just profiles, quick moving shots showing an arm, a leg, a side, a face, or back. It's not like some GTA hot coffee.

where would hentai games be without rampant f***ing in games eh?
now that would be lame.
how about bringing some of Illusion's games to consoles, hey guys? lol.

heh, theres so much killing in games and yet a developer is worried about a kid seeing a titty... while hes blowing peoples heads off. I say put the titty in there! a kid is more likely to see that one day then blowing someones head off (hopefully). With how porno is these days, the first place a kid is going to see a titty is not going to be a video game I think
