David Braben - Image 1The head of The Outsider's developing team Frontier Developments, David Braben, has made the following brave statement (made in the face of hardcore gamers and alike): the much acclaimed titles BioShock and Halo 3 are not exactly next-gen.

"I found Halo 3 great fun, too, but also a little disappointing," he said, adding that while Halo 3's graphics have improved, the gameplay didn't offer anything new that Halo 2 didn't. His sentiments towards BioShock was more or less the same, with Braben saying that he liked the overall oldies theme of the game, but that the gameplay wasn't next-gen.

Braben believes that Frontier Development's The Outsider, which was announced almost two years ago, will be a proper next-gen game that can trounce Bungie's Halo 3 and BioShock. And how does he define a "proper" next-gen game?

For Braben, a real next-gen game lets players have the tools or the means to affect the game's story more deeply than just merely choosing the "good path" or the bad path".

That said, we couldn't wait to get more info on how The Outsider will turn out. Since we haven't heard much about the game for several months, here's a refresher: The Outsider places gamers into the shoes of Jameson, a rogue CIA agent accused of murdering the President. In the game, players can choose whether to avenge his wronged name or to take advantage of the situation and wreak havoc onto Jameson's former bosses.

The game will be released for both the Xbox 360 and PS3. There's still no concrete information about the game's release dates or the actual gameplay, but you can be sure that we'll keep you posted.

give me a break, who isn't going to say : "if you like some of the best selling next-gen games, just wait till you see what i want you to buy!"

if this guy wants to steal some thunder, put up or shut up.

him saying that indicates to me that he's just whoring for attention for his game... on the backs of people who have already proven themselves, none the less.

I think he should've waited until more info for his game was released at least. I mean, the trailer made for that game made me think it looked like it could be interesting and fun but we don't really no anything about his game...

» will "the outsiders" talke the good path of the bad path? lol

Anyway, I'm totally with him that gameplay is not changing at all, and not especially in halo 3 or bioshock, but in general 1st-next(current)-gen. What I mean is, the game till now are the same with polished graphics and/or psyhics. The next real-next-gen will begin with assassin's creed (or maybe bladestorm, bladestorm is a revolution of the strategic genre, yeah, bladestorm will open the ball I'd say, but people will maybe not notice since the strat. genre is not as popular as action or shooters...), then followed buy games like uncharted, too human, MGS4, GTA4, last remnant, etc.

But WHY is everyone comparing to halo? this make me sick, I "disslike" halo games and I don't wanna hear 'bout it non stop! I know it's popular, but why compare? It's like they are just trying to hype their games on popular titles names... Like it's "the thing to do", to "kill" a big brand... the thing to do is what naughty dog, konami, square-enix, ubisoft, koie, etc! This means: boost yourself on what you can do, not what others can'T!!!!

   Re: Master Chef - 2007-10-11
» Bladestorm? You've got to be joking

I've played quite a few strategy games in my time, and Bladestorm is one of the worst. Easily the biggest piece of sh*t Koei has ever made, and that's saying something considering they're the f*cks who make the Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors games. How a game can be worse than those I'm not sure, but Koei pulled it off rather magnificently. I can't believe I wasted time downloading the 1.9 GB demo only to delete it a few minutes after it completed. The game is that bad.

About the Halo thing, an age-old adage can be applied: Why try to fix what isn't broken? Halo's gameplay is still so fun it can still be considered "next-gen". I, and many other people, can play Halo's multiplayer literally all day and not get bored. There isn't another game in existence besides a few games on the PC, such as Half-Life and its mods, that I can say the same thing about. You'd be an idiot to change Halo.

And Braden, until you make a game as good as BioShock, I suggest you shut it. I've never even heard of you or this "Outsiders" game. Do I smell an attention whore?

This guy doesn't even have the right to say what is next-gen or not. I haven't even heard of him until this article.

 » ,

I want Braben to know that he can suck on my nuts.

I appreciate that he thinks he has the only true next gen gaming experience, out of the 200 or so titles released thus far for the new consoles...many of those received 9.5 ratings and above.

So Braben...suck my nuts.

wow the REAL next gen won't start with assassin's creed looks like prince of persia it's gonna Start with Mass Effect then next year with GTA4 n MGS4,KZ2 n NG2, Last Remenant n Lost Odyssey

   Re: KnowLedge - 2007-10-11
 » Not really

Mass Effect perhaps, but if you look at what David considers as next-gen, it's not about graphics it's about gameplay, and therefore sequels of games from last gen such as GTA4, MGS4, KZ2 and NG2 which you listed, are not next-gen games according to him.

Although I disagree with him, because for me next-gen is next-gen for many reasons, even if the main update is the graphics in most cases.

Also, regarding his own game, even if The Outsider is as next-gen as David thinks it is, it would still have to be a good game FIRST before anyone would care about how next-gen it is. :)

Was the gameplay in Halo 2 lacking?
Does he have any suggestions to improve it?

Then he can shut the f*ck up, and if his game is proven better, THEN he can run his mouth.

 » next gen?

Its really what we understand as next gen. Graphics are improving and will continue to get better.
Game play as next gen? well an interesting statement and until technology delivers controllers etc that are capable of more than what we have right now its still a question of mashing buttons pulling triggers and very often getting frustrated by combos to select the correct item before your killled.
Story line? well Bioshock I really enjoyed and Halo as a trilogy is very enjoyable.
I am interested to see how his theory of reek havoc or clear your name will be such a big change. After all there are already games of this nature.
I agree with a previous statement that was made that this guy should deliver the goods as opposed to just stating that he is busy with something better. If we need to wait another year, well as I stated everything will be visually better.

It's a common marketing ploy to diss the top games then plug your own game to try and get attention. The chances of this guy creating anything that would outsell Halo 3 or Bioshock are basically nil. The Outsider looks to be a piece of poo.

 » good or bad...

... he got his publicity cuz we're all talkin about it. But yeah, will it garner interest on it's own? Never heard of it before this...Who knows .. who cares?

He's sort of right, Bioshock and Halo 3 are not next gen...There this gen. games!

I don't know about his latest creation but i did enjoy one of his first games...Elite, for you young gamers it was a very popular space trading game way back when.

 » kinda right

bioshock and halo 3 are great games but nothing new besides updated graphics. game play is the same as it was before. Bioshock at least had non scripted mobs and was random on where and what showed up and plays smooth and looks great but same game play still. Halo 3 from what ive played it is same game for the most part as halo 2 but i havent played alot of it
( halo is a good game but i never cared much for it great for peeps that are just trying fps for first time tho in my opnion)

 » I think....

it just depends on what people consider as next-gen. For some people, its all about the graphics for others its the gameplay and the rest its how the game is played (like a wiimote).

Halo 3 has better graphics but the gameplay is the same (good for some but not others). I know people are saying "if its not broke dont fix it" but that could of been said for half-life 1, HL2 is a much better game with what they did to it.

to me BioShock has taken a step back, the graphics are beautiful but the gameplay isnt a step-up from System shock and Bio. isnt even online.

-each to there own.
