 Most of us can agree that the PlayStation 3 desperately needs a price
cut. But when CNN says it, whoa nelly. In a rather merciless article, CNN's Eric Krangle explores Sony's rather disappointing sales figures.First pointing out that PS3 sales are down by 19% last month, Krangle proceeds to tear down Sony piece by piece, saying that the problem isn't the recession, seeing as how Microsoft put up "respectable numbers." Despite Sony's claim that they're doing fine with the November numbers, Krangle says that the PS3 is "dying on the shelves," and gives three reasons why it's "flopping so badly":
Tell yourself the PS3 has superior graphics if it makes you feel better, but a $400 console with a mediocre game library simply cannot compete against an Xbox 360 priced at $200 in this economy. Related Articles:

I would have bought a 360 over the ps3 for it's better controller and cheaper price, but the only problem is that all of the 360's games are somehow war related, and most are FPS's. Unlike prepubescent kids, I don't enjoy constantly killing things, and thats what I have GTAIV for. Ps3 may not have as many exclusives and is more expensive, but it has better games and free online service.

The price drop of the 360 is a big factor but another one could be the huge selection of 360 games and many of them very popular. But alot of home entertainment junkies buy PS3's because its still by far the best blu ray player out. I work at best buy and lots of older people buy them because they did research on it and if they have kids over they dont have to entertain them just give them the ps3 controller. I bought the MGS4 bundle just because it was backwards compatible with ps2 games. I love my kingdom hearts games,marvel vs capcom2, star ocean, killzone, tekken, ZOE, and alot more games. The only games that are worth buying for the ps3 are rachet and clank and drakes fortune best games i played on the system hated resistance reminded me alot of killzone but with aliens. But as i was saying people think of buying a system they see the price then they think gears of war2 and they go with it from their. My grampa even asked whats this gears of war and he lives down south weird!!

Also, I heard some people saying that (w/ the latest 360 update) they save the game to their hdd and use a unpatched burnt disk to boot up the game and still haven't been detected.

Even with a free service Sony still runs dedicated servers so everyone has a fair experience....SOCOM, Warhawk, Resistance, all have dedicated servers that you can join, as well as peer based match making....
NTM much higher player counts in games....Resistance runs just fine with 32 vs 32 player combat....360 tops out with 8 on 8, why, no dedicated servers....

Remember when the PS2 totally humiliated the Xbox even though it was inferior in quality. Yeah, it had better games and that made all the difference. Now, Microsoft learned from their mistakes and spent a fortune stealing exclusives, but Sony didn't. Sony focused on making a better console, but they forgot about games. In other words, they made the same dumb mistake Microsoft did with the original Xbox.
Also, Sony is stupid for not releasing a super-cheap PS3. They could release a console with no Internet, a simpler XMB, a 40gb harddrive, no PS2 emulation, and a cheaper case.
Of course, I know that the reason Sony hasn't released a "cheap" version is because they care about their brand, but at this point they are losing bad. Microsoft released a crap-box that breaks down easily and is made of inferior quality, and they are still winning! Same for the Wii.
Somebody should teach Sony about Marginal Revenue, Marginal Cost, and Product differentiation. God those people are stupid.

360 has 48 unified pixel/vertex shaders, but cannot run 48 of each at one time.....if a certain scene requires 24 pixel shaders, then 24 are left for vertex calculations...
PS3 has 24 dedicated Pixel and 8 dedicated vertex shader pipes, meaning if a scene requires 24 pixel shaders, there are still 8 left for vertex shaders....but this can lead to wasted pipelines...
It is like RAM, if you have 48 megs of shared ram for the vid card and system, you have to split it up, if you have 24 megs for vid and 8 for system, you can use each independantly without touching the other....

Well I can safely say my PS3 is dying on my shelf. It never gets a look in as I'm always playing on my 360.
The only use the PS3 gets now is for media playing, on the gaming front it's a big let down so far imo.

Anyway. The PS3 DOES NOT have a mediocre library with crappy ports. That was like early-to-mid 2007. I guess so many people are just stuck in the past to even see that.
Yes, the PS3 is a kickass machine. So is the other two. But uh, even ME, as a hardcore fan of PlayStation ever since 98 when I got my PS1, I know that Sony NEEDS a price drop for the PS3.
Look at all the bundles they released! How the hell do they not see that a price drop is needed. Every damn turn they just deny it. I can tell you this much, if the PS3 somehow manages to die off, I'm putting 1005 of the blame on Sony's dumbass P.O.S. marketing Teams. All of them.

when i use my psp with custom firmware, i feel like working with normal software platform - i can use the free sdk and throw whatever apps i can find on it. unfortunately, no thanks to sony for this one.
with ps3 you are so incredibly restricted about what you can and cannot do, even when running linux on it. i'll still buy a ps3 just to use it as a mpeg player/web browser/linux box, but i think that's about it.

i thought rather about useful apps. as far as psp is concerned i primarily thought about pspfiler, psptube, irshell, lightmp3, pspcomic and links2. most of these use pretty low-level hardware access (like power management, of internal flash access), they definitely would not have if sony provided an equivalent of ps3 linux sandbox for psp.
