Call of Duty 3

It seems like only yesterday we were knocking on the digital doors of the virtual Reichstag, or trudging through the snowy fields of Moscow, but it's once again time to suit up, sound off and fall in line, were only a short while away from our return to World War II.

The sequel to the best-selling Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 3 offers some significant changes over the last entry in the series, including a new close quarters combat battle system that allows you to get in close (I mean real close) and fight hand-to-hand. You'll also have the ability to improvise explosive devices, disarm traps and execute a great number of other battlefield situations that demand quick thinking and quicker reflexes to survive. In addition, you'll be have the ability to chip away enemy soft cover, flushing them out into the open, but you'll have to be careful as they can do the same to you.

Multiplayer promises to be an absolute hoot as well with support for up to 24 players (a huge boost over the previous game's 8) and the ability to commandeer vehicles with a buddy, such as tanks, jeeps, and even those nifty motorcycles with side-cars as well.

Now here's a chance for you to compare the current visual state of the game across three platforms (we know you're going to do that). From the screenshots it's pretty obvious that the Wii will be getting the short end of the graphical stick, a development that must have been expected really, but look at how much fun those "kewl" looking models seem to be having with the Wii controller! Ok, so they look like idiots, but many have pointed out that the Wii controller could lend itself quite nicely to First Person Shooter control, and knowing Treyarch, they'll be planning to make full use of it's singular design.

From the looks of things shadowing has yet to be implemented in the PS3 build of the game, but rumor has it this version will feature a few more light sources and other graphical flourishes over the Xbox 360 iteration. Rumor also has it however, that both versions of the game will be just about indistinguishable to the naked eye... that would indeed seem to be the case judging by these screens.

So there you have it folks, one of the first honest to goodness comparisons of what a next-gen multi-platform game will look like, it would appear that at least for now, the 360 and PS3 versions are just about on par with one another, it remains to be seen whether one console will gain a significant graphical lead over the other in the future. As for the Wii version, it seems to be moving along, minding it's own business, with an understandably less impressive graphical demonstration, it nonetheless hopes to make up for this shortcoming with unique control that offers a physical experience you won't be getting from the other two... I wonder if we'll see tilt sensor implementation in the PS3 version though.

if this game was really next gen it would look lik the pre rendered trailer. That seems possible on the 360 and definitly the ps3.

Wrong, that is impossible on the 360 and PS3. We are still a looooong way from pre-rendered quality graphics in game, maybe in the next two future gens..

 » holy crap

try holding your arms like the guy in that second wii screenshot for 10 minutes. that would have to get uncomfortable after one or two hours of gaming. And the graphics look current gen.

Wait until The unreal engine is implemented in the new Unreal and Gears of War and you will see great power in the next Gen...I don't think this particular game will bring us to that next level as other games on the 360 and PS3 already show us...

their is an article were the developers said that the ps3/360 version will look alike but ps3 having more light source, but no major graphic difference between the two. aslo he said with the storage medium the ps3 has that there will be alternative ways to do things (like different routes and such), but he also said that they will do there best with the limited space they have with a normal dvd.

i'll be back with a qoute and link.

 » here it is

"Route chosen, you and your fellow soldiers break the German line. Walking across the rubble and ruin of Saint-L??, you see a group of your allies throw grenades into a building to clear the Germans inside -- they fall from the second story, burning. Smoke flows from them and the now-burning building even as the Germans die. Again, scripted, but to help maintain the illusion of WWII, not to force you down a path. Events like these are part of why creative director Rich Farrelly is so positive about the Blu-ray format -- "More room equals more stuff. It's a simple equation. Any time we're given less limitations, we're going to exploit that to its full."

i guess blu-ray really does make a difference.

i was just a games tester, really. i tested Spide-Man 2, X Men Legends, I was the floor lead for the Gamecube version of Lemony Snicket, Madagascar, The Movies, Doom 3, Quake 4, i think that's it, really. it wasn't the best place to work for to be honest.

i'm at Obsidian Entertainment right now testing Neverwinter Nights 2, and working here is awesome. infinitely better than Activision. the CEO of the company isn't like most business execs, and he actually started out as a games tester, now he practically runs a game company (with others, of course). it's much different than the corporate mentality i experienced at Activision, where all they care about is maximizing profit from a mediocre product. over here, they'll actually delay a game if it isn't working right, fix it, then release it when it's ready, and something to be proud of. the developers come down everyday and talk to us, asking for feedback and what they can do to make the game better, so it's a very collaborative way of working. at larger companies, the testers are viewed as the cattle. the neccessary evil needed to make the game passable. here, they actually genuinely care what the testers think, and value their input. they get that if we didn't test the game, bugs would never get found, and the game would be weaker because of that. and for that they appreciate and respect us. it's a nice feeling, actually.

for the curious, Neverwinter Nights 2 is turning out very, very well. i can't wait to see what everyone thinks of it.

THESE GRAPHICS SUCK *****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS NOT NEXT GEN. THIS IS CALL OF DUTY 1. I might as well sell my system and wait for XBOX 3 or PS4.

 » To Curtis...

I do in fact have a 48" Samsung DLP 1080i that I play my xbox 360 on; however...the COD2 wasn't as good looking as a game like PGR3, fight night, GRAW, or MotoGP... It is impressive for how many things are done at once, but its still not jaw dropping like the other titles I just mentioned..

that guy in that hat driving the tank was so gay looking. and that other guy looked stupid too. if this is how you look while playing the wii, count me out.

 » better

there are much better looking games graphics wise than those COD 3 pics like Resistance looks beautiful, Brothers in arms and dont get me started on FFXIII (they show gameplay footage and it looks just as good as CGI) so dont think that because this doesnt look next gen, that the systems themselves cant have next gen graphics.

 » Calm down...

Wow, It is very odvious that most of you have never witnessed the growth of a console in your time. If you did you would realise you have to wait 2 or 3 years before you start witnessing truly impressive graphical yeilds on the system, because devs have to get use to coding for the system. If a dev has been working with the final system for less than 6 months and know basically nothing about how to design for the system. The games are not gonna look as stunning in the first generation...

I do find it interesting that PS3 is so easily on par with 360, because the devs proably orginally started the game as PC and 360 only and then adapted it to ps3 and wii when the final kits started to become more availible. Also, it was sopesta be harder to dev for PS3's cell technology since no one has ever developed for 7 processors before.

Calm down and realise that Call of duty will never be the most stunning series. They focus on making the engine work well on line and you cant have Doom3 graphics or FEAR graphics and run perfectly over an internet connection...

"...and you cant have Doom3 graphics or FEAR graphics and run perfectly over an internet connection..."

Yes you can (just ask PC gamers). :|

UT2007 will run perfectly on the PS3 online, and it's graphics are easily on par with Doom3 and Fear.

ha ha! ha ha ha!

Seriously though, they will all look the same on my 35" TV.
I'm not buying a new television just because HDTV is the latest buzzword.
The PS2 and Gamecube have a pretty good sized gap in the hardware numbers, but they both look and play exactly the same. Nintendo seems to do more with less. IOf you check out the graphics, ram and processor specs on these machine you will see what I mean.
Theat plus fact that the Wii is so cheap means it will be years until I bother to get a PS3.
