Treyarch's Call of Duty 5 a.k.a. Call of Duty: World at War - Image 1

It looks like the some of the rumors surrounding Treyarch's Call of Duty 5 actually have a ring of truth to it. Inside the latest issue of UK magazine GamesTM, videogaming247 was able to confirm some of the finer details of the upcoming wargame title (officially dubbed as Call of Duty: World at War).

For the first time in the Call of Duty series, it was confirmed that there will finally be a co-op campaign mode.  In addition, there will also be vehicles and squad-based elements included in the multiplayer aspect of the game.

Call of Duty 5 will return to its more historical roots as the game will be set in the Pacific theater of World War II. As for which platforms CoD5 will be released on, it was revealed that it will ship out on all the major consoles (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii), along with its obligatory PC version.

The Wii version of the game will have a different team working on it, though. The most likely reason behind this is the fact that CoD5 for the Wii will make use of its own set of peripherals, such as the Wii Zapper. However, all the available platforms will have one thing in common - the rehashing of the Call of Duty 4 engine.

To give you an idea of how "gritty" CoD5 will be presented, here's a quote from taken from videogamer247's source about it:

The opening scene of the first level we are shown is a Japanese commander stubbing a cigarette out in the eye of a prisoner before slitting his throat - the blood splatters and dribbles down the side of the tent you are being held in. He turns towards you to deal out the same treatment but help arrives just in time. Cue a daring level-long escape.

More information on Call of Duty: World at War will be revealed later this month, so make sure to come back to this space for more updates regarding the latest iteration in the Call of Duty series.

 » Ehh...

Wish it was set in "modern" times, dont see why they have to go back to WW2.
Oh well looking forward to the vehicles and such.

   Re: GW2 - 2008-06-09
 » is because...

the guys who made call of duty 2 made 4, and the guys who made 3 (the *****ty one) are making this one. six will be modern. thats confirmed. and six will be made by infinity ward, the same guys who amde 2 and 4. oh and 2 had vehicles, and 4 had the AC-130 gunship mission. not exactly your regualr vehicle mission, but fun anyways.

   Re: blackmobb - 2008-06-11
 » COD5 Reasons

Call of Duty 5 was being developed before COD4 was released so they thought the whole "Modern Warfare" idea wouldn't be a success so they went with the WWII concept. I forgot what article I read that from but google around and you'll find it.

CoD5 sells 1/5th as well as CoD4. Fails to recoupe production cost, posting a net loss. Launches with major problems on PS3, including freezing and complete network blackout. Outputs at less than 720p on both systems. WWII setting still boring as hell.

Any bets?

   Re: Fallen - 2008-06-09
 » Don't forget:

Blame it all on Piracy. Those damn dirty pirates. /cop-out excuse

Gripes aside, Do we really need another CoD so soon?. 4 Just came out ffs and it is great fun. Quick! Milk that franchise!.

   Re: NarooN - 2008-06-09
 » RIGHT. FAIL.

Well, considering that this game is called "CALL OF DUTY", 90% of the people who bought COD4 will instantly buy this when it comes out, regardless of what time it takes place in. Treyarch knows the PS3 well anyway, and their COD3 had no problems at all (besides a lack of splitscreen, if you can cite that as a problem)

Anyway, I might buy this, but I'm really just waiting for Killzone 2. It seems that Treyarch only knows how to do WW2.

 » I'm happy with COD4

To be honest, I would have preferred if the didn't release COD5 for the moment. COD4, in my view, is an absolutely perfect game with a really addictive Multiplayer mode (well, actually that's the only mode I have played on COD4. I couldn't be bothered with the storyline.) Therefore, rather than focusing on a new game which goes back to WWII, I would have liked them to design and release more maps for the COD4 Multiplayer. In fact, the new maps could include vehicles and other new features.

That's just my opinion though... Perhaps COD5 multiplayer might end up being much better than COD4 Mutliplayer.

   Re: Nevers - 2008-06-09
» check out the story, dude

... I'm a "my game's gotta have a good story" type o' gamer and I say though it's slightly short, especially the lesser difficulties, but it's one of the best war-stories. Some real shock and awe happens that makes your jaw drop.

CoD5 will sell like hotcakes riding on the coat-tails of CoD4... I'll cast my judgement on Treyarch's Duty5 when we actually see it and play it.

» Maybe a Call Of Duty set in the future

I think for another change they should make one set in a futuristic believable war with a game engine at least as good as Call Of Duty 4! It would be cool to have some war in a believable space environment with laser rifles, tanks, gunships and futuristic air/space planes. I think if done right they could make it show realistic and believable futuristic technology. I think it's worth a shot.

   Re: AvecMon - 2008-06-09
 » mmm hmmm

Yeah. I agree....but the key words is 'if done right'. If so, then it would be as sucessful as COD 4.

like Battlefield 2142? Yeah, that would be cool.

   Re: Noobicious - 2008-06-09

That's a good idea, but I just don't quite believe the laser rifles. Sounds too much like Star Wars to me.
Maybe they could make a completely tricked out version of battlefield 2142 with CoD4 engine

why the heck did treyarch get call of duty 5.......infinity ward did way better..and they would make call of duty 5 alot better whith a modern setting or future setting...it would of been called futuristic warfare or something fun if infinity ward did it.....but now its gunna b a gay ww2 game...they mine as well call it call of duty 5 :the big let down

 » Huh?

When did piracy come into this.

Anyway ill prolly still be playing COD4 on my PC what with new maps being released by nVidia. The main thing that puts me off this is the WWII theme it was over 60 years ago isnt it time we move on?

   by mikel301292 - 2008-06-09
» I'm actually looking forward to it

There was a lengthy 6 page article about the new COD in GAME magazine. After reading it, it looks good. It still uses the COD 4 engine, aparenty even the wii uses it which they plan on adding to.

Also they are adding flamethrowers which is supposed to fire the most realistic fire ever seen and water is going to paly a mjor part in the game.

As for multiplayer, there are going to be small squads and there will be team perks.

All ai all it looks good, lets hope treyarch can live up to infinity ward

   by NarooN - 2008-06-09
 » Actually.

Treyarch is a very good developer, so I don't see where all the flak comes from. Just because YOU don't like WW2 games, doesn't mean THEY suck as a developer. The COD games aren't all they made.

Since this game has a subtitle it leads me to believe it probably won't even be an actual title but more of a spin-off. Either that or they simply wanted to drop the silly numerical subtitles.

   Re: Uplink - 2008-06-09
 » Treyarch

They are the ppl that raped CoD3 possibly the worse CoD title EVERY. IW needs CoD Exclusivity.

   Re: NarooN - 2008-06-09
 » k.

What was so bad about it? It barely any different that COD4 besides the setting. Same controls, same gameplay. And yet, just because it's not IW, they raped the game?

To be honest COD4 gets old after a while. If you look closely, the graphics are horrible in some places as well. Most of the textures are low res rubbish even on HD, things like clouds look like they were drawn in MS Paint (literally) and I only have fun playing in Private Matches with friends. It's a good multiplayer game at first, and it has a robust story, but it doesn't deserve the endless praise it's gotten.

   Re: StainlessSteve - 2008-06-09
 » No, Treyarch does suck.

Well seeing how they made the AI have the same IQ as one of the kids who rides the short bus, I would say that alone is reason to believe the game sucked. If you need more then you can look at the half assed level design and the rehashed WWII story. I'm not saying it's a bad story I'm just saying maybe it's time to move on after all of the WWII Call of Dutys, Brothers in Arms, Battlefields and other similar games. IW just knows how to make great games. Treyarch knows how to make piggy back off IW, and make quality Spider-Man games (just kidding the Spider-Man games suck).
Oh and does it really matter if the graphics suck in some spots? It's still one of the greatest looking games to date.

   Re: NarooN - 2008-06-09
 » wow.

Now you're just mindlessly bashing everything they've ever done.

And quite frankly I simply disagree with your opinion.

   Re: na2rul - 2008-06-10
» ok i agree COD may be good

After reading somewhere about the story intro,

*spoiler* some guy slits someones throat. it mentions lots and lots of blood as you can imagine. then the guy goes towards you with the knife......*end*

pretty dramatic and a promising start.

COD4 engine should mean this to be the best looking WW2 game.

@NarooN
Textures are low res and a lot worse compared to Halo3s extremely high res textures. But its still IMO the best looking FPS. Halo3's textures kills the framerate.

if cod5 has splitscreen online like halo3, then its a must for me.

   Re: NarooN - 2008-06-10
 » lol @ Halo 3 Graphics.

Not being a fanboy here, but honestly, Halo 3 just looks like Halo 2 in HD and with better lighting effects. That's all it really is. It doesn't look like a true next gen game.

   Re: na2rul - 2008-06-11
 » @NarooN

I know ur not being a fanboy. We all know Halo3's graphics are the outdated Halo2 engine.

   Re: StainlessSteve - 2008-06-11
 » Mindlessly bashing?

I think those are perfectly legitimate reasons on why Treyarch is not the quality company that you make them out to be. If you beg to differ then please back that up with some examples instead of just saying that they are.

   by Nathanjones151 - 2008-06-09
 » Whats the big deal

Ok, I know people hate treyarch, but why? There not a bad developer. Yes some may say that COD3 sucked. I on the other hand really liked it, although the glitching bastards did get a bit out of hand sometimes. Remember people Treyarch made COD: United offensive and COD: Big red one both of which were phenomenal. Now to those people who say ‘why can’t infinity ward make it’ If you haven’t noticed, they just made a game, do you really think they are going to rush and get a game done in under a year, I don’t think so. That why Treyarch have the odd numbers.
I myself welcome the return to WW2, I love the weapons, and I love the stories that are told. Now I know people say ‘o not another WW2 game’, but have you ever stopped and thought for a moment, and thought about other games. How many RPG’s are there that involve you having something/someone you love taken from you and you have to set out to get it back. How many alien based shooters are there, how many driving games are there.... the list goes on. It doesn’t matter about the setting. So people before you bash a game and suck up to infinity ward, please think about what you’re saying before you make a fool of yourself.
Nathan

   Re: StainlessSteve - 2008-06-09
» I'm one of those fools.

Please don't tell me Big Red One was good. It wasn't. I never played United Offensive though. Anyway, they are a pretty bad developer. They are the kind of developers who rush a game onto every single system because they are greedy and don't care about quality. They are the ones who made all of the Spider-Man games (which came out on every system) and Minority Report. They suck hands down. Please don't feed the machine.
   by robbo16 - 2008-06-09
» cod 4 wasnt that good

yes it had all this new multiplayer stuff and perks but it had nothing on cod 1 and 2. cod 3 was more fun than 4 the single player could be beat in a few hours (possibly due to space restrictions on dvd) the multiplayer was really good though. if cod 5 is built on the same enging then the multiplayer will also be good all the cod 3 devleopers will do is optimise it for their game.

 » Wii

I hope the team behind the Wii version can find a way to set up an online multiplayer experience similar to Medal of Honor: Heroes 2, as it's the only online FPS for the Wii, has accurate controls, and it supports up to 32 players on one map (using EA's servers, but Treyarch can probably make their own). They'll be able to sell quite a bit more copies to keep Wii users occupied with a shooter if they have nothing else to play.

   by Orlyeh - 2008-06-09
» World War II and CoD3

WWII is not really my thing, but I did enjoy the heck out of Red Orchestra. Now that was a quality WW2 game which many developers are learning from (lack of crosshairs, iron sight usage, etc). I'll probably buy it if it's anywhere near the quality of CoD4.

Now, as to why CoD3 sucked so bad and what turned me off of Red Orchestra after a major patch/upgrade: VEHICLES. It's utterly no fun to play a first person shooter when you round a corner to an awaiting tank spammer. Great, instead of a battle of wits, skill, perception, and luck, I stand no chance whatsoever.

This is how Infinity Ward displays its utter genius: put in vehicles but don't let the players ride in them.

   by Eclipze_ - 2008-06-09
 » No thanks

I hate the theme of "the past". It already happened, thats just boring in my opinion. Another thing is I hate the guns. I like modern or futuristic guns (not lasers or anything like that --_--). The fire rate on almost all of them besides the light machine guns are slow as hell. No p90's, M16's, Uzi's, and other guns you love in cod4. Not even the easy to use scopes will be there.. Idk, I like for the game to have things I recognize, not something a grandfather would.

I like games like Metal Gear because Kojima productions can come up with their own story, set it in the future, and make it damn good at the same time. When in this game.. the developers just read a history book and copy it onto the game. Boring..

Come to think of it, IW did their own story set in modern time in an imaginary place lol, and it turned out pretty good.

   Re: NarooN - 2008-06-09
 » ?

It's not that it's boring, it's just too overdone.

COD4's locations were HEAVILY based on real-life events (Iraq is obvious, Chernobyl and Russian areas are too) so it's not completely imaginary.

I don't know where MGS came into this, but ok.

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-06-09
 » I know

That some of the spots were real places. I even saw a picture of The Bloc level.

But anyways, in my opinion its boring (mainly because of the weapons) and overdone. And Mgs came into it to show the story differences (and that its coming out in 2 days!).
   by Popson - 2008-06-09
 » Misconception?

A lot of you people seem to think Infinity Ward is doing nothing right now. They're undoubtedly working on what is presumably "Call of Duty 5", considering Treyarch is making "Call of Duty: World at War", which doesn't continue the numerical increment.

So yea... all you guys shouldn't get your manthong's up in a bunch; IW is still working away... who cares what Treyarch does, if they make a good product;yay.

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-06-09
 » That would be weird

if two call of duty title slip into the same year timeframe. Hopefully cod5 (assuming your right) will come out next year because I want it to cook for a long time so we can see lots of new stuff added.

   Re: Popson - 2008-06-10
 » No.

I meant Infinity Ward is working on a CoD title right now, I didn't say it would come out at the same time, in fact, i meant quite the opposite.

They obviously wont come out at the same time.. i'm just saying the next IW-CoD isn't affected by what Treyarch is doing so i don't know why people are complaining.

Come on Infinity! make COD 5 with new with weapons in another different modern day setting and it will sell millions!!!! thats for Sure
