Xbox 360 controller - Image 1Gears of War 2 producer and Epic Games stalwart Cliff Bleszinski is among the most outspoken devs you'll ever come across. After causing a stir with his comments on Metal Gear Solid 4, he recently talked about the state of today's controllers and what console manufacturers could do in the next generation.

Bleszinski went direct to the point, saying that today's pads are too complicated with too many buttons keeping player's fingers busy.

"This is purely me speculating in my own realm of game development, but if you look at a controller right now it looks like an alien spaceship," he told CVG in an interview. "I think you could do things with a built-in camera or a little motion sensitivity."

"You look at the Wii controller with less buttons - they added functionality by doing waggle," he added. "Not a lot of games use the waggle well, but Super Mario Galaxy for example uses it perfectly."

When asked what future consoles can have to improve their handles, Cliff let us in on what he has seen and what he thinks would be a good fit to consoles.

"I've seen some prototype camera stuff that some friends are working on that can actually tell the depth of the world around the player, and can track individual finger movements and stuff like that. That's exciting stuff, and I think that's where it all needs to start going towards," he concluded.

CVG will let loose the rest of the interview later today. We'll keep you posted for more interesting stuff when it hits the web.

im getting about sick of what Cliffy B has to say.
The mans made one truly great title. and it's sequel isn't even released yet. and yet he thinks he's suddenly in some position to offer insight to the future of the industry.

egotistical douchebag much..

Man somebody needs to Itagaki his ass and knock him down a few notches....

Why can't they be like Hideo Kojima or Hinorobu Sakaguchi. These two guys, although famous, still respects what fans want rather than what they want.

Kinda hard to believe the guy who had quite a hand in making Unreal wants less buttons on controllers. I've lost a bit of respect for him

how can you really get rid of buttons. they have been this layout since ps1 analog, except for xbox but it still had the two buttons black and white.

That's exactly his point. Nothing has changed, util the Wii. Motion capture technology has substantially improved since the PS1 days. His point is it's all buttons, not enough movement. Heck even adding a split down the middle of the controller so you can twist it would make games more interesting.

but why change what is good and works

Moving the controller about all gimmick-like for Mario is just that, a gimmick. The current layout of buttons (PS3 and 360) is just about perfect. Furthermore, I have never held a controller so comfortable and easy to use as the 360 one.

That's what i was trying to say in my other post.

I'd much rather prefer lots of buttons then tons of button combos

I think the 2 best controllers I've ever used was the Xbox 360 pad very closely followed by the SNES pad.

While the snes pad had fewer buttons than the 360 pad it fit the game design and limitations at the time.

It doesn't matter how many buttons a controller has, it's how it's designed and how games map the controls that make it good or confusing.

I think the PS3 pad is quite nice, if not a little light, but the MGS4 gun aiming and CQC controls are poor. It's not that the PS3 pad is confusing... It's been perfect in some games, just that developers really need to think about what and where needs to be pressed.

He just isnt down with the kids this man, he is to old to adapt to a new better controller, like he cant work out mobile phones (cell's). Any other person can play with them easy.

I have a Wii. And I can say with absolute certainty that it is the first, last, and only motion control console I will ever buy. Not to mention the last Nintendo product I ever buy.

No motion sensing crap in shooter style games, thank you. Also if he makes gears of war 2 with the A button doing EVERYTHING from jumping, rolling, running, and taking cover I'm not getting it.

That's why there's lots of buttons! So the character doesn't get behind cover (on the wrong side) when you're trying to run!
