 In an article earlier posted by IGN previewing Epic Games' upcoming Gears of War 2, an interesting remark was dropped by team member Cliff Bleszinski about Kojima Productions' hit Metal Gear Solid series. The developer said that the MGS model isn't one that they'll be following in terms of storytelling,in GoW 2."Metal Gear Solid is our example of the game we're not doing," Bleszinski commented when he discussed how cut scenes will drive GoW 2's story. "Passive entertainment is on its way out." "Games aren't movies and aren't consumed in a single sitting," he continued as he talked about hooking up with Web 2.0 among other game design elements. This is indeed a contrasting view on Hideo Kojima's famous "interactive movie" view on building a storyline. Oh well, to each his own we guess. The GoW and MGS franchises are two very different things whose story lines just can't be told in a similar way. |

It is easily my favourite game for the 360...can't wait for the second one.
One thing to Cliffy B though: you have a long way to go before you are anywhere close to Hideo Kojima...Gears of War is amazing...but like you said it yourself...it isn't (and will never be) MGS.

all though MGS4 is the best game in the world to me, I work at Toys R us in time square in NYC, which btw is the number 3 tourist attraction in NYC and we have a crap load of MGS4's and idk if we are getting major shipments or if they're not selling(i don't work in that department) but where i work they are never sold out. I cant imagine it's still selling that well still. I could be very wrong though and sorry if i am i know I'm just one store.

I suppose that's why I didn't like GOW1 when I had an x360. Still, beside having no story, I also didn't like the fact that you almost only use one gun for all the game. In the end, I really hated the 2 hours I lost on GOW, it was boring. Not that it's a bad game, tons of people liked it. But saying MGS4 is not a model, lol. At least he said it's not a model "for them".

If they don't want movies in the game, they AT LEAST have to make movies where you have to press a button or something like the resident evil 4 movies, lol. Man, Epic's guys can do good games (for people that aren't like me, for people who likes halo and GOW games instead of crysis) but they can't understand the market, and they seem to be the kind of guy you encounter in texas or so. The usual non-smart guys that loves bush, lol.

As a PS3 and 360 owner, and an owner of both GOW1 and MGS4 (and 2 and 3): I prefer playing my games, not watching them. If I wanted to watch 90 minute cut scenes, I'd watch a movie, not a video game.

being a 30 year old gamer i will tell you that i miss the old days of console gaming, there wasn't online play then but to me those were the glory days of gaming... where you get emotionally invested in the characters and the story... where you actually CARE... tell you honestly up until now gamers are still emotionally invested in those games that they've played before because of the characters and stories that it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that some even helped them to deveop as a person... it left a mark.
i enjoyed those days more and it stuck to me, if it didn't then i wouldn't be gaming until now... if all i had before were shoot-everything-insight-the-hell-with-it-games then my childhood wouldn't have been as good as i had back then and i wouldn't be gaming now... and you know what killing and shooting and killing and shooting everything in front of you might be a hoot... but guess what i won't even remember it after the next high profile testosterone-high, generic kill-everything game comes out let alone make me nostalgic even after 20 years.
it's safe to say that it doesn't matter how high profile your games are mr. cliffy, if you don't care about the story the way that you should, to even diss a game with a good story by saying that it is only passive entertainment and on its way out, then be prepared to be forgotten soon enough... you could only hope to "pull a kojima".

I don't see why people keep saying Gears of War had no story. It did. And it's very interesting. They put little tid bits throughout the game that make you want to know more. Like, we know pretty much nothing about Emergence Day, why was Marcus thrown in jail, what happened in the jail (you know when you kick that door open and you see dead bodies hanging and Dom says , "What the hell happened here", then Marcus says, "You don't want to know"), what happened at Marcus' trial because Dom stated it was a sham, why Marcus' dad has the Locust tunneling data, at the end of the game, who are the native inhabitants of Sera are, you here the Locust Queen talking about how the Locust cannot stop fighting for Sera, and many other things. And Gears 2 is going to expand on these story tidbits and will have a great story. Also, there's the Gears of War movie. I think I remember reading somewhere that the movie was going to explain more about E-Day. I'm not putting down MGS4 in any way, I'm just putting down the people who are putting down Gears of War. If anything, I prefer my PS3 over my 360 because I got so ripped off from buying a 360. First of all, you have to pay for the console which overheats, the hard drive is over priced, I had to pay for the Play & Charge Kit, I had to pay for the Wireless Network Adapter, I had to pay for Live, I had to pay for the rechargeable batteries for the controllers, all of which comes with the PS3 with no extra cost. The PS3 is a very powerful console and is greatly designed unlike the 360. It doesn't overheat even after 108 hours of extensive use in a sauna, the fans are quiet unlike the 360s, you don't need to pay for a Wireless Network Adapter or anything, it's built in, it comes with chargers for your controllers, playing online is free, oh and it's a Blu-Ray player. With all the price drops and the upcoming exclusive titles, the PS3 is a great value in terms of what it's worth and the selection of games it has now and the ones that are coming out soon.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Gears has a good enough story and it makes you want to find out more about it. It in no way comes close to the depth of MGS4 but then again it doesn't need to. It's not that type of game. I loved Gears I've probably beat it about 5 times and I absolutely love MGS4 I'm half way through my second play through and I'll probably play it several more time cause the game is just that good and satisfying. They are completely different games that shouldn't be compared to each other. Now........Cliffy B should've just kept his mouth shut cause the comments he made were out of line and he should be more respectful of a great game designer and story teller such as is Kojima and his team. I will never grow tired of Metal Gear and I hope that he keeps making them. In my opinion MGS4 is the best game on the market right now and it's gonna be a while before anyone tops it. Just for the simple fast that it's so well rounded. There are great incredible games coming soon but I don't see any of them having the whole package like MGS4 does. I guess that would make MGS4 the greatest game ever made. At least to date. lol I can't wait for Gears 2 to get here but I also don't like when young *****y punks put their foot in their mouth saying things that they have no business saying. That's my 2 cents.

but the reason why hes not able to make a mgs like game is because the system hes building for holds very little on a disk XD
my other problem is that he does have a point. few people are playing games for its story now adays... they are all going to multi player as its base. I will admit that multi player is fun but sadly im seeing more and more games were the single player game is terriable and the multi play is great.
