CryENGINE 2 2 game engine by Crytek - Image 1

After the release of last year's Crysis for the PC, we've seen just how powerful a game engine CryENGINE 2 is by pushing the visuals of the game to new heights for an FPS. This year, Crytek has announced that it will be giving everyone a sneak preview of how CryENGINE 2 will look like on the Xbox 360 and the PS3 during a demonstration of the game engine at the upcoming Game Developer Conference 2008.

Crytek staff members Cevat Yerli, Sten Hubler and Bernd Diemr will be hosting a GDC session entitled "Crysis in the Making" at the event. The talk will feature a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges of developing the game and the CryENGINE 2.

Hopefully, this will spell better quality visuals for the current generation of consoles should the technology translate well enough for the heavy spec game engine (Crysis for the PS3 and Xbox 360 perhaps?).

The company will also be hosting other demonstrations on how to run the high maintenance game engine on a decent PC with minimal specs. Crytek will feature this and other demonstrations at booth #6611 in the North Hall of the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

The GDC 2008 will run from February 20 to 22 and will feature other big names in the video games industry as well as the latest innovations in their field.

 » Crysis for PS3/X360?

If Crytek will hold what they said before that current generation console can not handle Crysis, then I wonder what games we will be seeing soon...

Cant wait to see what they can do as far as pushing the PS3's power. If the people that made crysis make a game it better be looking like killzone 2 or better, if not then thats a dissapointment.

It would look way better on my ps3 than it does on my PC, lol. (still, I'll get a geforce 8600 gt soon enough since they cost around 99$ with a free copy of company of heroes, then, I'll play crysis at maxed settings since my screen is not that big :D )

"Cant wait to see what they can do as far as pushing the PS3's power" - And the 360's. ;)

As for looking better than Killzone 2, that may be difficult to judge. The Crytek engines usually specialise in dense foliage for jungle/forest based environments rather than urban environments, but still, the comparison should be interesting.

 » yea

I'm not talking about where exactly in the game, just the clear graphics and stuff. If they can do crysis on the PC then they should be able to pull somthing amazing on the Ps3. + I'm not saying 360 because, I dont have 1 lol.

 » Crysis for consoles...

well from what i've read online, crytek has been hiring ps3 programmers, so they could probably make Crysis for ps3.. it would probably take them awhile to do it, but once they push the power of ps3 far enough, they could get it running quite smoothly, probably... they'd also have to lower the graphics, but they could fix that if they add an install game feature... they'd have to install 5+ gigs of data, but it would be worth it.. so yea they could get it to run... now for 360, i'm not so sure... no offense or anything to 360 gamers out there, but the hardware has already been pushed pretty hard... there isn't that much hidden potential left... they've proven that ps3 has alot of potential left untapped (killzone 2 anyone?) but 360's potential has already been shown in games like gears of war and halo 3... once again, no offense to 360 owners out there...

 » That's nonsense Azrael_666

But who are you (or any gamer) to decide how much potential has been reached on the 360 (or even the PS3)? Stop being a sucker for the hype and try listening to developers! :)

EVERY dev who has WORKED with both consoles says that at best, the PS3 is only slightly more powerful than the 360, and they say that about the hardware itself, not from what we've seen so far or what may be possible in future. You will not find a single 360+PS3 dev anywhere who believes the PS3 is full of potential and the 360 is maxed out by games like Gears. The ONLY people who say that are gamers because they believe everything Sony and Sony exclusive devs tell them.

So no offense Azrael_666, but please stop listening to hype and start listening to the truth from non-biased devs. CryENGINE 2 is the SAME game engine powering Crysis on the PC, therefore if what you say is true, then the demonstration of CryENGINE 2 at GDC soon should be more impressive on the PS3 than the 360, and CryTek should be able to confirm that it can achieve more on the PS3 than on the 360!!!

My prediction is that it will be practically identical between the PS3 and 360, shooting down your claims, but that would probably mean you and certain other gamers will forget about Crysis and move the 'goal posts' to some other future game or game engine.... no offense. ;)

I'd like to see a multiplatform engine succeed Unreal Engine 3. Hopefully Crytek can pull it off.
