Microsoft has been sending out Halo 3 press packages worth US$ 800 to various gaming journalists. San Jose Mercury News game journalist Dean Takahashi, who received one of the packages, pointed out that this move was "nothing less than a bribe to try to get me to be favorably inclined to accepting the idea that Halo 3 is 'the entertainment event of the year.'"

The contents of the press package included a copy of the game, a Halo 3 Xbox Live Headset, a Master Chief Helmet, and even a Halo 3 Limited Edition Xbox 360. However, fans of the video game, speaking from various Xbox 360 discussion boards, have pointed out that this was simply Microsoft's way of getting the reviewers into a "Halo mood." Takahashi, on the other hand, plans to send the Halo 3 press kit back to Microsoft to deliver his point.

So far Microsoft hasn't given an official statement on these allegations. Hopefully, they'll be releasing one about soon to clarify their stand on this. While waiting, why not check out our review of Bungie Studios' Halo 3.

Thanks to Elliott for the tip!

Even if it is a 'bribe' who cares, it's ultimately the reviewer who decides whether or not they rate it good. People who say it's nothing more than a gift are probably PS3 Fanboys who need to find a reason why everyone likes it

I favor the PS3 above Wii and 360. And I am willing to admit that Halo 3 is a good game, the multiplayer is awesome. the 360 has their good games and the ps3 will have their good games. (FFXIII, Metal Gear)

Like you know LordQuas431?

Please just cause he think"its nothing but a bribe" don't associate him with PS3 fanboys. Quite frankly it is a "bribe", How would you react if you was microsoft and found out Halo 3 was rated below 9.0, yeah pissed off, that and hype is what makes it rated near perfect scores which it shouldn't Halo 3 is a very good game but in my honest opinion deserves nothing more than 9.3 at Most, its graphics are practically the same as halo 2.

@Keith K
FPS isn't for mentally inept people like you are mentally inept. Why don't you leave QJ since you have no common sense and your completely ignorant. You should have been an aborted baby.

I think you need some oxygen, you've obviously been denied it since birth.

Regardless of system, First Person Shooters are for the mentally inept.

Considering the comments you have been making on here, I am starting to think you were dropped on your head as a kid.

First-person shooters are for the mentally inept? Go play Deus Ex then say that again. Or play Unreal Tournament and try to get just one kill against someone who is good. When you lose, come back here and tell me the guy you played against is mentally inept.

The ungrateful git is just trying to get his name out there. If he really had a problem with it could've just quietly donated the bundle to charity and gave the game a poor review but no he had to sing and dance about it 'Hey everybody it's me Dean Takahashi.....I'm on the internets!!!'

I half agree with this. It probably is there to put the guys in a Halo mood but MS weren't insisting on a good review in return for the goods.

 » It's a way of advertising

It's just a marketing techinque. MS sends out these goodies to journalist, they will in turn mention something about Halo and show off the goodies on all the "limited edition" halo stuff. More people would then be aware of how big the Halo series in and probably would end up going out to buy the game anyway just to see what the hype is all about.

I admire Brian Lam at Gizmodo and what he did with his bag of stuff.

As above this guy is obviously desperate to have his name splashed on the net. I doubt anyone at MS gives a toss about what he has to say. They made there 24 hour sales figures and then some they are probably all partying too hard to care what he has to say.

since when do reviewers complain about freebies?

i don't really think MS was of the opinion that it needs to bribe reviewers for good reviews of such a great game.

Keith, which games are for normal or advanced people such as yourself? i would like to know so i can better myself and be just like you... retard.

What a waste of energy, I really think that Dean for once probably got out of bed on the wrong leg. Normally he writes stuff of interest and generates worthy discussion. All major and many minor companies send out stuff at easter of Christmas to what they regard as potential clients or people that may have some influence to better their sales, its a marketing strategy that has been in existence for more years than i could quote accurately. Dean! whats the problem? as stated above give the game etc to a local charity so that they can sell at a profit and then make your review which you will or would have done regardless of the press package. By sending it back to make a pointless statement you have deprived a charity of selling a collectors item for money to do something good.
