As far as the console strategy goes do you think that if Microsoft were to license DivX for the Xbox 360 that Sony would be under a lot of pressure to license the codec as well or do you see an opportunity where Microsoft could differentiate themselves there? The pressure would certainly be on and then it’s a matter of the politics of each organization. I would argue that on a pure market competitive basis, if Microsoft stepped up and put DivX on the Xbox, they would have a significant competitive advantage and the onus would be on to reduce that advantage by licensing DivX as well, but that doesn’t imply however the Sony would have the forethought to do it. One of the things that’s clear from watching DivX’s popularity online is that a lot of people want to know how to get DivX on their Xbox 360, the PS3, even this weekend some industrious hackers figured out a way to bring their DivX movies to the Wii, have you talked to the console companies about officially supporting DivX and how have those talks gone? We actually talked to those companies back in the PS2 and the Xbox days and back then things didn’t go particularly well. As a company we always have a basic launch where we start with the consumer and work our way back and as a consequence we tend to be more successful in marketplaces that are more influenced by market forces then top down strategies. Which is to say we do better in open vs. closed, so if it’s more open like a DVD player as opposed to closed, like a cable set top box or a cable provider, our systems will have more traction. We found that the second generation game consoles (or technically the fourth depending how far you go back), the PS2 and Xbox and before the gamecube, were still very closed in their way at looking at the world. Increasingly, for a variety of reasons, many which are random as happens to be the cases, we are seeing these next generation game consoles are taking a more open approach the way they are looking at the marketplace and so I have more optimism about our ability to get DivX to those clients, mostly because the consumer is being more vocal in demanding DivX for those clients. We haven’t gotten any concrete announcements about to happen yet, but I do tell people it’s important and I do spend time focusing on it and certainly you can put me on the record as somebody who would be delighted to see DivX in all those media consoles. Also you can put me on the record as someone who recommends that if you don’t currently have a Wii, that you buy one. |

I don't know about 360, but my ps2 already is a divx player. PS3 is homebrew enabled so we'll see some homebrew solution eventually
I don't see why sony would be "pushed", I mean, we're already able to play our divx files on our ps3 with fedora, so errr, M$ is just retarded in this...
360 plays divx/xvid, mpeg's and H.264-videos with third-party software.
There isn't any third party software for X360 yet!
WonderStivi said WITH third-party software so he would be correct.
Wonderstivi is right. You use a third party program to stream it to your 360.

Come on, as the song goes, people who use the Internet for self-gratification is in the thousands, "
Can anyone tell me what does he mean by "SELF-GRATIFICATION" ??
thank you!
ps: do I get the feeling that im a perv?
i will definately be installing linux on my ps3 and that will mean i will also install VLC then i wont have any problems playing divX, but i think it would be great if sony implemented it generaly.
but personaly i think Xvid is much better than divX anyway, so why waste time on divx?
Divx and Xvid are owned by the same company, they are basically the same, Divx is older so it has been worked on longer, Xvid is newer so it has new technologies and compression techniques, both have pros and cons but Divx is more popular than Xvid due to the fact that it has been out longer than Xvid
do you mean the current generation or the next gen which will come out in five years? you were the monkeys that pointed out that the 360, ps3, and wii are now current generations.
I am not sure but what about Xvid and other codecs?
Divx is ok, would be better if you could install a codec pack onto your console like: K-lite Codec pack ( http://www.filedl.com/overview/3-K-Lite-Codec-Pack.html ) or some other pack?
I would get the ps3 and use linux, Hell i'd use the sms player for the ps2 that plays xvid/divx
Would you really want to have to boot into linux, use the gui with your mouse and keyboard, open an application, navigate it to your videos, and play while praying it looks okay ....? OR, have a built in option on your "dashboard", especially if it could stream over the network?
You may install linux for this purpose, but you'd never use it after the first 3 days.
there are specific distros of linux that their sole purpose is to imitate a set top box so it be haves like a dvd player. And if you have to pray that your videos look good i bet that the 'official' version wouldnt look any better seeing how some of the open source altenatives look better then the closed versions
Because Linux can browse windows networks.
Therefore all my divx files on my Windows XP PC can be easily played back through the PS3, wait, i do that now. Its easy as making sure Samba is installed and you can share a folder on a PC, and view any files.
I was just playing Divx and Xvid movies on my 360 last night....streaming ftw.
X360 doesn't play DivX/XviD!
It's on-the-fly trans-/encoding..
Not as comfortable as XBMC..
When I watch movies, I don't want to hear the loud PC behind me..
then get some decent cooling thats quieter. replace anything stock or with LEDs in it with quieter, more efficient name brand fans.
The thing to think about is that you have the noise of your PC with streaming (transcoding) but if the 360 had the codec built in you would either still have the pc noise for streaming them without transcoding or the extremely loud noise of the DVD drive spinning to play the divx files off there.
