Before, gamers were criticizing studios for influencing game
reviews in order to sell more games. The most notable incident where this became an issue is Gerstmann Gate.Recently though, it seems there's a growing trend for gamers to try and influence game reviews and scores themselves out of loyalty to their own platforms. Edge Online feels they may be the target of gamers' ire this time when they recently got flamed for their 6/10 review of Resistance 2. In response, they ask, "What are reviews for?" The point of their article is this: Reviews are supposed to help consumers decide what to buy, but it seems that now, gamers are looking to reviews as a way of justifying their own purchases: [...] Common sense would dictate that a review is something prospective consumers may use to inform their own judgement of a title before making a decision on whether to invest or not. [...] The reality, it seems, is far more complex. [...] Glossing over the comments left by readers of the ‘Resistance 2’ review many of the most hostile are from those who have already played the title. [...] It isn’t too much to assume that PS3 owners would have a lot invested emotionally in the success of the title. As such, reading positive reviews could very well be one way in which consumers can justify their choice of brand and product. Edge concludes that "ultimately, it is no one’s place to dictate how game reviews are best used," but that this experience serves to remind reviewers that their opinions aren't just read by consumers who want some perspective on whether to buy a game or not, but also by gamers who want to feel that their game of choice matches the consensus'. I think the reason HALO3 got 10 was the fact the game was good the pace / music / atmosphere / controls / AI / forge the first console game with map building and posting the 10 is for a perfect game that has original / never been done before .
where resistance 2 just has bigger ennamys same AI routens 60 player multi player dose not mean the game should have a 10.
I am not an Xbox fan boy I have all three consoles if any thing I love the big N (think this has been the worst Xmas games rellase ever WII MUSIC my ass Animal Crossing)

Disagree on GTA4. That game kicked ass. Definately worthy.

Gt4 deserves a 10 out of 10? Are you kidding me? Did it get a 10/10 for boring online gameplay, framerate issues (I have 360 version, I don't know if the PS3 did), or did it get a 10 out of 10 for that annoying ass *****ing cell phone.

GTA4 should have 9.5
Halo 3: 8.0
LBP: 7.5
super mario 64: 9.5 to 10
gran turismo: 9.5 to 10
ocarina of time: 10
mario galaxy: 9
etc
GTA4 wasn't bad. It was pretty good, pretty much complete, with a super good cover system. The only thing it lacked was a bigger map, but it's always like that for the 1st GTA on a new generation of console. And the other thing I disliked was the story, nothing compared to the story of GTA SA wich had the best story of all, and the biggest map of all (best GTA in my opinion). But they can't start with the best, lol. Give them time, the next one will be WAY bigger now that they coded the main physics/models, etc.

The fact alone that they gave The orange box 10 out of 10 points proves that they are not worthy of any sort of attention. Just another one of these typical MS-bought sites whose numbers soar at the moment.
Other examples:
gameTrailers, which reviews of Multiplatform games on X360 are continously better, Eurogamer, which is the European fortress of Xbox bias,
and GameSpot, whose reviewers can clearly be bought.( I just say Jeff Gerstmann...)
And besides, Whom do you trust more? A *****ty site that nobody knows, or HUNDREDS of other sites that gave the game a good rating?

...that someone doesn't feel didn't deserve 10/10, and so says it's overhyped.
so 10/10 is not right or wrong, it's just an opinion. i dont get why people get so worked up over 10/10 scores as if 10/10 means perfect (which it doesn't).
and Silver Tiger, claiming websites have been bought just because you don't like their reviews or opinions is a bit, well a bit stupid really. imo of course. :P

oh yeah, don't believe me? Search for google, you will find that GameTrailers faked videos just to show the Xbox 360 in a better light.
Eurogamer.net.... well, just to that site, you will be bombarded with 360 ads, and you will see a dozen of X360 reviews, maybe one or two of the other other systems and nearly no PS3 reviews.
And Gamespot, There was even a huge article here on QJ, they even linked on it.
Anyway, my point was that Egde has is own opinion. I can't change that. That's just their opinion.
But all other sites, even including the ones I named above, rated R2 at least with 8 out of 10.
Metacritic, for example gave them 83%.
So, IMO, one site gives it a bad rating, all other sites give good ratings, So who cares about a site nobody has ever heard from?

"oh yeah, don't believe me? Search for google"
oh please, search google and you'll find 'proof' to any point of view you want to express. :) people see what they want to see.
you say there's nearly no ps3 reviews on eurogamer, and yet I'm seeing lots of ps3 reviews on there. and also, how does that make them biased against the ps3. those websites dont buy the games they review, they review the games sent to them, and maybe they get more 360 versions of games sent to them from publishers.
as for the edge's review of R2, so what? name your favourite 'unbiased' gaming website where you wouldn't find a single game where the reviewer didn't scored it a few points below the average seen on metacritic or gamerankings. it happens, since it's the reviewer's opinion, it doesn't make the WHOLE website biased.
you said "And besides, Whom do you trust more? A *****ty site that nobody knows, or HUNDREDS of other sites that gave the game a good rating?"
good point, BUT i don't 'trust' any ONE site, since i dont assume there's a website who has reviews i'll always agree with. for game reviews, i go more by the averages seen on metacritics and gamerankings, and then i select some of the reviews to read from there, including those that rate the game the highest and the lowest. :)

And for Eurogamer.net... Do you really think if a page gets loads of money for advertising on their site, they would actually rate the game bad?
that doesn't make sense.
It was the same issue as Gamespot's Jeff Gerstmann controversy.

Agree with this one, too. See, our opinions aren't that different ;)
To sum up, I think there ARE some sites that are definitely biased for Xbox 360. And definitely much more then biased for PS3.
That doesn't mean I like PS3 more, my opinion on the consoles are completely different. I think both consoles offer something that the other one doesn't have. I depends on your likes, values, and so on. A hardcore egoshooter player who likes to play online will likely go green while Multimedia freaks will surely go PS3.
But, we shouldn't listen to just these sites, but instead compare different reviews from different sites and actually TRY that game before giving it up.
And after all, we are all gamers, so let's not fight, but instead enjoy these great games Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo offers us.
GAMERS UNITE!!! XD

Not nearly as innovative as the EA hype.

» Well, ratings are made to be objective, and oriented
EDGE is wrong. Ratings are made to be objective, and they didn't understand that. If the ratings were completly objective, all the reviewer would rate a single game with the same exact rating or almost.
Also, you need to rate a game you could like. For exemple, a guy that loves american RPG like oblivion and fable CANNOT rate tales of vesperia badly saying it's not a real RPG, lol. You need to take someone who loves Japanese RPG to rate a japanese RPG, so those who think about getting the game (JRPG fans) will know what to think of it. An arcade racing game fan cannot rate gran turismo for the same reasons. He'd say the controls aren't good, the game is too hard, not realistic, while it's the other hand, the game is realistic, the controls are good, etc.
The best ratings were from gamespot before, but now I only use gamespot for the forums. Instead I think the gametrailers are done WAY better and are more oriented towards the people who like the genre, wich is perfect. For exemple, they said lost odyssey was really great, and JRPG fans will agree, instead of saying like gamespot that it's good but nothing more. Gamespot is trying to give an objective note that everyone could agree on, wich is impossible, so they review mass appeal games like gears of war 9.5 but they get lost odyssey 7.5 for exemple. Still, gamespot have an advantage, you can see the average for votes and the averages from critics, wich is great. Anyway, gametrailers is now almost the only one wich is worth watching. lol.

» Um, yeah. . .
Thats why there are multiple reviews available, cause not every reviewer has the same opinion about things. How can anyone expect to get a general picture of a games value from just one review?
As for the issue of gamers using reviews to justify their purchase, is it driven by the investment or could it possibly be social. You like the game, you want others to like the game or you want to be liked by others for having the game. Like how that guy at school who taunts you for not having (blank) yet. Hard to backup your claim with poor reviews. Which brings me back to the start, find another reviewer.

» WTH!!
pesonally I feel a rating is not a fair take on a game, cause we all see things differently. the critic that review a game might not like how the camera is this way or how the controls is that way. Does this mean I won't like it? hell no. review the game and give us gamesr info, don't rate the game on you ( the reviewer) beliefs and taste.
damn, same thing as some guys like big boobs, some guys like skinny chicks. to each one his own.
