The Xbox 360 - Image 1Despite the costly extended warranty project for the Xbox 360, Microsoft remains optimistic and confident that their entertainment and devices division, the department in charge of the Xbox 360, will be better for the next fiscal year.

Although Microsoft has estimated that their extended warranty project will cost US$ 1 billion, it's been reported that the actual figure amounts closer to $1.2 billion. They have declared a total loss of $1.89 billion for their entertainment and devices division.

Microsoft added that it would have been a greater loss had there not been a reduction in the cost of manufacturing the console. Factors that contribute to the loss is the decrease in sales of the Xbox 360 and PC Games. Sales of 360 accessories and the Zune helped offset the loss however.

However, being the giant that it is, US$ 1.89 billion for Microsoft as a whole is just a drop in the bucket. The revenues of their entertainment and devices division for the fiscal year ending on June 30 is up 28%, reaping in US$ 6.08 billion despite the warranty extensions. Microsoft itself garnered US$ 51.12 billion, a 15% increase from last year. The revenue comes from increased sales of hardware, software, TVs, mobile devices and the strong presence of Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007.

 » That's small change...

If you do some web-searching, you'll find out that Bill Gates gave more than 10x that amount to the "3rd world" this year.

Given the fact that the all the worlds problems haven't been solved yet, you'll see that 1.8 bn isn't a lot of cash on the global scale.

Its funny when people think microsoft is suffering because of the 360. The loss from the 360 is not hurting microsoft as a whole at all. Microsoft is a huge global corp. I think their main focus is eventualy down the line to come up on top. You can sort of see it in their strategies... buying up alot of 3rd party game developers, many exclusives and many once ps3 exclusives going cross platform, xbox live development including renting movies and tv shows. Seriously, I think microsoft is actually being the smarter of the bunch. They're not trying to be the number 1 selling console.. they're trying to take over the world lol.

To bad they'll never get Japan, unless they buy sony.. which ya know, is not to far fetched of an Idea. I love being a PC gamer.

a billion dollar lose is a billion dollar lose. I think what MS is doing is simple, they tried to venture in the console market one last time with the 360. They will carry Xbox Live to the PC world with Vista, once all of us upgrade the video cards on our PCs, Microsoft will implement features that let us play 360 games on the PC, then get out of the market. Bill Gates and the heads of MS will not stand for another billion dollars to be wasted.

 » u sure about that

i think companies know that they will make certain losses. Especially on consoles they all make losses its the games that help make the moneys and the accessories. And theyve said theyve done well off those. They have far more games than any other console and look to carry on that way. So to lose just 1/50 of their profit i wouldnt think that will worry them in the slightest. Granted its more than they would have liked to lose but its still only 2% of profits if that.

MS will not leave the console world, if they do it will be bad. I can see your logic, but in the PC console world MS would have to set a standard video card and system configuration for a set interval that developers would have to abide to, which is no different than them making a console in a way, but still there would be alot of headaches with going completely to PCs. There are more console gamers than PC gamers and to be a PC gamer you would have to be more techie type... Its just the truth.

MS *has* set a standard for video cards and system configuration with DX10. But I don't think they are dropping out of the console world.
