When producer of Mirror's Edge (PS3, Xbox 360, PC), Tom Farrer and his team created Faith, they wanted her to be exactly as we see her now - the tough roof-jumping heroine of the Electronic Arts title. They wanted her to be attractive, but not look like a supermodel. Her body was formed in such a way that she can realistically manage the things she does in the game.

But when a gamer from a Korean message board shows everyone his idea of a "better," sex-ed up Faith, his picture sparks a heated debate on women of games and cultural adaptations. "I remember when I first had that image sent to me. To be honest, I found it kind of sad. We’ve spent time in developing Faith. And the important thing for us was that she was human, that she was more real," Farrer said.

We really wanted to get away from the typical portrayal of women in games, that they’re all just kind of tits and ass in a steel bikini. We wanted her to look athletic and fit and strong [enough] that she could do the things that she’s doing.

We wanted her to be attractive, but we didn’t want her to be a supermodel. We wanted her to be approachable and far more real. It was just kind of depressing that someone thinks it would be better if Faith was a 12-year-old with a boob job. That was kind of what that image looked to me.

Amen, Farrer. Not every woman in gaming has to be a busty Lara Croft. What we have here is a school girl who doesn't even look like she can mount rooftops, even looking like she's the only one who'll get mounted. Besides, the game is in first-person, those who don't like the way she looks won't need to look at her. DICE wanted to get rid of the guns, and they want to get rid of the jugs too. That's a big cut in sex and violence right there.

I have to hand it to the guy who created the picture, though. That's some quality editing.
