If things went differently, we could have actually been romping around Vana'diel and consorting with Shantotto on the PS3. Turns out that Square Enix had plans to release Final Fantasy XI on the PS3 as well - and not just the PC, Xbox 360, and PS2. According to Hiromichi Tanaka, FFXI producer, it could have gone well if Sony didn't fall short on the bargain. Fall short of one representative, that is. And continuing plans of getting the MMORPG on the console are proving fruitless because PS2 backwards compatibility across all PS3 SKUs is looking quite impossible: Initially we were in talks with a representative from Sony [to achieve this], but it appears that that person quit. [Current] PS3s don't have PS3-side PS2 emulation, and it doesn't look like Sony has any plans to address that issue. For that kind of thing to even be conceivable, it would have to be on a disc. Digital downloads wouldn't work for this. The disc has to be in the system for the emulator to work. It's a shame, really. To my knowledge, if they did release FFXI on the PS3, it could have been the first MMORPG to hit the console - ahead of SOE's very own The Agency (which is technically an MMO shooter) and Free Realms. If they took the time to port from PC to PS2 & 360 then they can port a version over to the PS3 instead of trying to just get the PS2 version working on that machine.
They're really just being lazy and trying to make an easy way around it and Sony isn't bowing to their idea - thus they get snippy.

» well that's true
if sony doesn't start bowing you'll see more "FFXIII Coming To 360" announcements.

» Maybe square as a company ?
Not only has Final fantasy gone down the drain, but I havn't played a good Square game in ages....the latest one I tried was Infinite Undiscovery, and it should have been left infinitely undiscovered on the store shelf...

For your information, Infinite Undescovery is very similar to Final Fantasy 11. Albeit offline, changable parties that fight in real time combat and cheesy english voice overs. Items are crafted in a similar fashion to the MMO, but don't cost tons of gil. Graphics are a bit better than 11 as well, but then again, Tri Ace is just getting the hang of the 360. Star Ocean (another 360 exclusive by Tri Ace) looks simply amazing. Last Remnant is a Square Enix title that took me by surprise. Active combat similar to Lost Odyssey. Chain Linking visible enemies a la Blue Dragon. The one aspect of combat that was original was that there is no main character in combat. There's formable teams of fighters that level up and a leader or two that gains abilities faster, which you have control over. You submit commands to your teams and watch the battle play out, all the while keeping your twitch fingers ready for A,B,X,Y or RT. Even on defense. Highly recommend that any RPG fan give it a shot. Has a FF Tactics feel with the Union Formations except there's no stupid grid or judges that tell you what you can and can't do. Good Job Square Enix + Tri Ace

» opinions? HA!
Well, you have yours and we have ours. I've been playing Squeenix games since the late 90s, and the last GOOD one I've played was FFX. Didn't ever try out FFXI, and a few other recent games since I didn't see any reason to buy them (didn't help that a lot of them received mediocre reviews, but i dont go by reviews so meh)'
I'm not all pissy over FF going to 360. They released FFXI on 360 ages ago and no one said anything about that, so how is this special? IDC if we lost an exclusive, we still have FF vs 13, but I'm not buying either so yeah.
About this issue, Sony should just put a PS2 Emu on the damn store already. It's not impossible to do it, but they sure do make it out to be, or are just too lazy to do it.

» What they should do...
..is stop being lazy. Sure having an emulator would make things easy and the fact FFXI already works on backwards compatible PS3's makes their lives a little easier, but they should really think about just flat out porting it to PS3 normally like they did with the 360.

» I agree.
Yes. Why not just port it to PS3? That'd make it even easier. TONS of people would buy it just because it's an MMO. Man, I swear that us gamers are smarter at marketing than the actual Marketing teams are...

Way I figure it, Sony owed them PS3 help after *****ing them over with the PS2 HDD. They took years to create it, and when they finally did, they release the slim PS2 a couple months later, basically c-blocking their sales. I'm a pretty big fan of Sony's hardware, but that never sat well with me.
I imagine it didn't sit too well with Square either.
peace,
CR
