The Last Remnant... of what? - Image 1With a name like "The Last Remnant," you'd be wondering what kind of game Square Enix has been cooking up - and if it follows the same naming convention as Final Fantasy. Thankfully, (a) Game Informer magazine has Square Enix's announcement of the game, (b) Jeux France has some details from the magazine, and (c) Jeux France blogs' blakguy posted up some scans courtesy of GameFAQ forums.

Talk about finding remnants of The Last Remnant all over the place. Jeux France notes it's rather exceptional that Square Enix would make the premiere announcement in an American magazine, and not Famitsu or Shonen Jump as would be expected.

According to Game Informer via Jeux France via Google Translate, The Last Remnant will use Unreal Engine 3 (which makes the potential platforms PS3 and Xbox 360, maybe PC, which counts out the handhelds and Wii). The RPG centers around two heroes, each caught up in a war over mysterious objects called Remnants, each with his own reasons for joining the fight. Combat seems to be turn-based, although Jeux France mentions something about "the engagements are announced besides imposing on vast battle fields with much of soldiers."

A couple of the screens blakguy found in GameFAQ should demonstrate what Jeux France was talking about.

And the characters faces at the left at like FF12 faces a bit. This game is looking real-time, that's for sure, and it's looking like FF12-13. But err, it's a bit stupid for square-enix to use the unreal engine since they already have the white engine... maybe they use unreal so they can multi-platform? Since the white engine was made for the ps3. So instead of porting, they could maybe create the game directly multi-platform friendly? hard to say. Anyway, the game will surely be cool!

I think they use Unreal because its easy to make cross-platform games. White engine is optimized for Cell, so rehauling it to work on other platforms would be costly.

 » this means the following..

the Central FFXIII games will use the Cell-Based White engine and will be PS3 exclusive,as with all the games that will use the Engine

the Last remnant is a Squarenix attempt to creat a new IP with multi-platform systems in mind, this will probably include PS3,Xbox360 and vista

the image is clearer now,and it will be as follow

The Central FF games: PS3

crystal chronicles FF games : Wii,DS

Last Remnant Games : Multiplatform

Online FF games : Multiplatform

what remains os the Kingdom Hearts games,Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile

these will be decided later

Let's see how well will SE mix turn-based fighting with dynastly warrior-style battles.

I'd favour a full fledged turn based system, like the one seen in Lost Odyssey. It has shown to perfectly incorporate in massive battles.

Let's hope it won't be a scew-up.

 » Alea Iacta Union

Interesting to see a Caesar quote as the name of a "Union" (Alea iacta est - The die has been cast, said when Caesar crossed the Rubicon). What are these unions? Count me as excited!
