Yeah, you heard the title right. It's just that we're really not sure of the limitations of that statement. Yet. Maybe you're thinking: did Microsoft Game Development Group">Chris Satchell mean three out of four games coming out for the 360? Or three of four games in the whole wide world of gaming in general? The latter question might be a bit of a stretch, but hmm, let's go into this further.
During the Game Developers Conference, Microsoft game development general manager Chris Satchell talked about the progress of their game development tools. He says that more and more developers (both professionals and amateurs) are embracing their XNA software.
As Dean Takahashi puts it in his A+E Interactive post: "[Satchell] contended that three of every four games being developed are being made first for Microsoft's platforms using the XNA Game Studio Express by Microsoft">XNA tools." Satchell even mentions how they are in the leading position in this generation.
They're going to be bundling the GarageGames platform along with the XNA Game Studio Express just to entice even more developers into the bandwagon. As it currently stands, Microsoft's game development tool (without the GarageGames) has already been downloaded by over 250,000 users while more than 80 universities have already drafted curriculum offering tutorials on using the XNA Game Studio Express in game development classes.
At the rate things are going, Satchell expects over 320 Xbox 360 and XBLA games out in the market by the end of this year. Pretty astounding numbers, but it isn't that surprising especially how Microsoft is marketing game development awareness. As we reported, they already have the Dream-Build-Play contest scheduled for summer.
