Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii consoles - Image 1Even with the holiday rush of games over, it doesn't necessarily mean that people will finally get their pick of Wii consoles at the local GameStop. According to the recent financial results from the video game retailer, Wii shortages will still become prevalent in the next six months.

GameStop COO Dan DeMatteo was quoted to have said that Wii supplies "won't meet demand for the next two quarters". In contrast to this, the shortages seen for the Xbox 360 and the DS will be seeing increased allocations to offset the demand.

On the Sony gaming platform end, GameStop is anticipating shortages with the PlayStation Portable handheld. However, it was also mentioned that the PlayStation 3 won't be seeing any problems and that GameStop expects "good stock when GTA 4 launches".

David Carlson, GameStop CFO, also assumed the price drop of as high as US$ 50 for both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 some time in the year. No Wii or PSP price cuts have been assumed in the company's financial models.

In a final statement issued by GameStop CEO, Dick Fontaine, he explained that the competition from digital downloads wasn't an overly big concern for the company. He mentioned that mass-market extent of the digital download market was an additive experience for gamers and in no way threatened their own business.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Gamestop has their head up their rear.

The last time I was in GS I asked how many Wii's they got per shipment. The guy told me 6. My next stop was Target. I asked a gal at the electronics section the same thing and she told me 30. WTF?

Which, btw, GS had NO wii's and Target had a few.

You want to know why GS doesn't have any stock in stores? Because they HOLD most of their Wii's for RIP OFF online packages.

Forget GS, go somewhere else.

While I agree Gamespot sucks, don't you think they are selling the pre-order Wii deal still? Since Nintendo is limiting the supply by storing Wiis in the 'ol secret warehouse, they probably didn't have their orders filled yet.

 » Huh?

What makes you think that they get more systems per store than a Target store? Well let's see, there's only 2,000 stores of Target in the country versus 5,500 GameStop stores... If they both were shipped 100,000 systems and Target stopped selling them on their website, then sure, Target STORES get more. But I think it's pretty equal down the middle if you do some BASIC math.

As far as the online packages, I think they are a rip off too but this isn't so that way GameStop makes more money it's so GameStop gets more systems. Allow me to explain, systems ship more quanities to the companies that have a higher attach ratio with accessories and games (new) and since we all know the companies model is to sell used games and not new they can't compete with the big box retailers in this category so the bundles off set this. It's fundamentals of the business to try to be as big (if not bigger) than the big box retailers...

As far as everyone's opinion about GameStop's customer service, every store is different. I have a close friend that runs a GameStop store and he prides his store of knowledge and wants to be helpful, other stores don't have that, they're either stupid or they are arrogant and not helpful.

Just remember this next time you bash GameStop, you stopped walking into a GameStop store because you couldn't find anyone in the game department of Best Buy (or wherever you go) that knew anything about video games and you were sick and tired of buying games you didn't like only to have wasted $60 so now you go to a store that knows about the games and you can abuse their 7 DAY FULL REFUND used policy if you buy a bad game (which you find out is very often when you see how many times you do the 7 day return).....

Alright, last comment, Wii's suck, they are gimmicky. I only own one for parties, other than that, why don't you give me a 360 or PS3 controller (prefer 360) and play some real games with me...

"What makes you think that they get more systems per store than a Target store?"
What makes you think they don't?

"If they both were shipped 100,000 systems and Target stopped selling....."
That's an assumption on your part.

All I'm saying is, start generating your own facts about your own area. Of all stores anywhere GS is always the one *****ing about no stock the MOST.

1. None of knows which company orders more units.
2. In my area, it's FACT that GS is always out while many other stores are not.

When you add the SAME reports from many different areas, it's easy to draw the conclusion of telling people to either stay away from GS or at the very least DO NOT make GS your only stop.

"Allow me to explain..."
Sorry but that explanation sounds hokey. People that go to a GS are more game oriented. MORE LIKELY to buy games and accessories. Target shoppers are more likely parents buying for their kids. Nintendo would want to push more business towards GS then Target. Also, if what you said was even remotely true then after (how long has the Wii been on the market?) all this time Nintendo would have shifted MORE to GS by now. So if what you said was true, it's obviously not working.

"Just remember this next time you bash GameStop, you stopped walking into a GameStop store because"
What? Was the word "stopped" supposed to be "started"? I don't agree with all the Best Buy stuff you said, not sure what the point was as it's not a BB employee responsibility to make sure you don't waste $60??? However, I agree that not all GS's are the same. I have 9 in my area and I've been to all of them. 8 of them are filled people that either don't know a DAMN THING or are complete JERKS!!! One of the stores however is good, I frequent there. They treat people with respect and while aren't all that knowledgeable (I stopped expecting this a LONG time ago with all businesses) at least business can be conducted in a mature manor.

Now, let me qualify what I mean by them not being knowledgeable. I enjoy busting games wide open. I usually play them, then play the CRAP OUT OF THEM again. For consoles this requires Action Reply (Gameshark) and on the PC it requires a hex editor. This is mostly why I enjoy PC games more. Anyway, now that I have a PS3, none of my AR apps work anymore for PS2 games. I searched online and came up null. So I hit the GS's. Including the store I like NO ONE KNEW WHAT ACTION REPLY was. You heard me right. WTF? How do you know anything about consoles and not know what Action Reply is? Every single time I asked if they had it for the PS2 someone asked me, "What type of game is that?". Only one store new what Gameshark was. The rest didn't know what that was either.

For anyone that cares, after trial and error, the newest version of Gameshark works on the PS3 for PS2 games. HOWEVER, you can not update it. It can't read the USB port and it's can't use the NIC. So what codes are on the disc is all you get.

» Any Store I Go To......There All Gone.

For the past year or so when I go to the retailers, they are all out of Wiis. It's funny though because they have a sh*t load of Wii games in stock but very few buyers.
