Going ballistic in five, four...

Unlike the little breakdancing glitch from earlier, which were good for a small laugh, this account from 1UP blogger Rappateng, is more worrisome. He has run into (1) repetitive Disc Read Errors from his Gears of War, and (2) forums with people who have run into repetitive Disc Read Errors from Gears of War.

Rappateng's GoW was new-buy, his 360's relatively new (bought May 7, 2006). Still, on November 12th, while trying to get into a multiplayer session, he got his DRE. Checked his disc - "it was flawless" - loaded it up, got a DRE again. Played other games, which worked, played a movie, then tried GoW: DRE. After calling up Xbox support without any helpful result, he went over to the GameStop where he purchased the game - seems that two other guys had the same problem.

Rappateng got home with a new copy. Worked fine until fifteen minutes later: DRE. Worse yet, his 360 refused to load the game at all... Long story short, he's got a non-working Gears, then he did a little digging, to find a ton of forums with players who're having similar Glitches of War. MS support can't help, and Rappateng cites Epic Games">Mark Rein dropping by in one of those forums, pointing out that Epic can't help either since Epic Games doesn't print the discs - Microsoft does that.

Potentially it could be the difficulty of the laser in the DVD drives of some 360 manufacturing batches to read the dual-layered discs that Gears and other games are usually stamped on. Another theory could be the discs themselves, which also makes it a quality control problem. We haven't seen anything official yet to explain the glitches.

 » Wrong fix.

This fix is for modded dvd drives showing a drive open error.

On-Topic
I wonder how many of these drives that are giving errors are modded. Becasue in the PS2 days, burn media caused many drives to fail becasue of extra stain on the laser.

 » nice

 » i had this

i had this guys it starts like that then it eventually gets to the point where it stops reading all discs its something to do with the lasers according to microsoft cause i sent mine back for repair and they said its cheaper for them to just replace the machine than repair the drive.....

 » uh huh

This happened to me, brand new game and xbox 360, but the other games worked so I took it back for a new copy which works fine. I think it was the disc and hopefully not the box.

 » No Problems here

Never had a problem with GoW, however Oblivion does it very occasionally and the disc is immaculate. I heard it was hard drive caching errors causing it.

 » yup

had the same thing, noticed micro scratches on the disc, very feint, but it obviously hates the slightest glitch on the disc.

hard to believe that with the age of the cd, they cant make the protective laminate more durable.

with those scratches, i wont be able to get a replacement, will have to buy a new copy, damn it

 » Me too

Got GoW on the early release day and that night had the problems, seems the longer i play the more chance it happens, if i play for 30 min at a time i never see it, soon as the disk is in for an hour i get repeated dirty disk errors, shut the system down and wait 20 min, no not eject the disk, and it picks up and reads right off on the same level.

I called MyXbox support and they kept wanting me to clean the disk, this was a disk that went out of the packaging and straight into the console and stayed there for three weeks.

glad to see im not the only one.
returned one disk to the store (you could actually see the disk seperating) got a replacement, works much better but does still get the occasional error.

 » Same here

I've encountered the same glitch too. I've played the game since release but yesterday was the first time it happened for me. Twice in half an hour. I don't have a modded DVD drive mind you and I bought my 360 on the European release date which was December 2.

*****ing sucks. I hope it's something that can be fixed with patches. I really don't like the idea of having to buy a second copy.

 » disk read error

i had a problem like this with dead rising. funnily enough ive never got it with any other game. GoW ran without a hiccup.

i'm not sure it's the game that's the problem. when i was getting it in dead rising, i went on the net to see if other people had this problem and sure enough there were others with this problem. it seemed to vary though... some didn't get it until 2 hours of play while others couldn't even load it up from the start. of course there a lot of people that didn't have the problem at all.

this isn't an isolated thing. it doesn't just happen on GoW. this has been reported before on games like saints row, oblivion, dead rising etc, etc. some people get the error while others do not. of course once other people claim to have the same problem they instantly think it's an issue with the game. type "dead rising" along with "disk unreadable" in google. you'll see ;)

Oblivion did it to me and now Rainbow Six Vegas is doing it sometimes in the middle of an online game but Gears was fine.
