Gears of War movie in 2009 - Image 1

The feature rights to Gears of War have just been won by New Line. Yep, we're going to be seeing a feature length GoW movie in the future. This was after an auction hosted by CAA, where script writer Stuart Beattie gave the videogame a 21-page treatment. In the proposed project, alongside Beattie are Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey as producers under their Temple Hill label. Not only that though. As Variety.com reports, we can actually expect a sequel for the game too:

Though it hasn't been announced yet, a sequel vidgame is assured. If development of both projects goes smoothly, New Line and Epic would surely love to see the film and a game sequel come out around the same time.

My, my... How ambitious. While any further mention about the sequel doesn't extend any more than that, let's just talk (for now) about what we do know and what the Variety.com article revealed. The GoW movie. With the Halo movie on hiatus, hearing news about a proposed GoW movie couldn't have come at a better time.

As the schedule stands, once Beattie's done with the script, Bowen and Godfrey will go window shopping for a suitable director. If all goes well, they hope to release the movie by 2009. CliffyB himself is said to be an executive producer for the film.

While there's been a tendency for videogame-based movies to suck be a disappointment, Mark Rein assures us that they'll be doing their best: "Our first and foremost philosophy is to do no harm, so we debated heavily the idea of doing a movie at all. But we feel we stacked the deck in our favor by working with the best players."

QJ jests; petitions for a Brokeback-themed movie between Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago are most probably open. All those in favor...?

It will probably be some really lame cartoon movie. Even if it was a real movie, it would be full of one liners and "The Rock". Good God.... It would only make about $25.

If they are going to make a movie, make it animated, like final fantasy spirits within, dont make the movie with real people, it will bomb. And have the same voices as in the game. 2nd GoW 2, i hope its a prequel so we can see the beginning of the war with the locust.

I would like to have a sequal but with flashback cutscenes explaining the story in a more complexe fashion.

Well, hopefully I'll buy a 360 before 2009 so I can complete the first Gears (first played it at my cousin's house) then get the second Gears.
