HL2 PC - Image 1 HL2 PC - Image 2

Sometime last month, we posted an article about Valve and its upcoming Half-Life 2 box sets, which were scheduled for a summer release. However, just today, the latest update from the folks at Valve and Electronic Arts states that these box sets may instead be released by winter of this year. Sigh.

The good news is that Valve has also released some pack shots of The Black Box and The Orange Box, and as we can see from the images, they're... well... black and orange. In any case, The Black Box is exclusively for PC owners and contains the games Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. The Orange Box, on the other hand, will be released in versions for the PC, the PS3 and the Xbox 360, and contains Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal, Team Fortress 2, the original Half-Life 2, and Half-Life 2: Episode One.

Meanwhile, Valve's co-founder, Gabe Newell, is proud of their new product and their partnership with EA, and goes on to beam that,

The Black Box and The Orange Box represent a new approach to publishing multiple products, on multiple platforms and we know through our experience that no organization in the industry is better equipped to successfully launch new product types on multiple platforms than EA Partners.

 » A NON-FANBOY EVALUATION OF SYSTEMS

IN MY OPINION ps3 is better.

PS3 ~ nVidia 7900.....
XBOX 360 ~ ATi 1800
CPU's ~ the same with PS3 having a negligable advantage.
PS3 = faster 256 MB dedicated to each CPU and GPU
XBOX = 512MB slower shared.

As for BLU-RAY its either good or bad depending on how you want to use your system, although it theoretically will allow for bigger more detailed or longer games.

I figure that the PS3 is only worth the money if you are going to really use the blu-ray player. if not you can save a couple hundred bucks and settle for a "slightly" not as advanced system.

as for games, the playstation brand has historically had the biggest library of games, but that has no bearing on what will happen this time around. i think once the ps3 has matured it will have just as many games as any other system.

i rest my case.

P.S. if i left anything out, or am in correct about anything im sure some fanboy will let me know.

P.P.S. i did not consider the wii because it is doing something totally new and different, and in my oppion is not relly in direct competition with the PS3 or XBOX

The 360 GPU *****s all over the PS3's. Go watch the latest 1up show about Shivering Isles to find out how awesome the PS3's memory is. The ONLY reason to buy the PS3 is if you're a Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, or GT fanboy. The 1st 2 will most likely end up on the 360 eventually. And this time round GT has no force feedback (plus there's Forza 2).

As a whole the 360 with it's LIVE / LIVE Arcade, achievements, MCE and more is just a much nicer experience. The only down side is their fail rate.

Just because you claim not to be a fanboy doesn't make it true but putting that aside for a moment, do you really think this is the place for your opinionated garbage about the current consoles? This article is about a game, yes a game that is coming out for both the ps3 and the 360 but a game none the less. Most of us already have chosen are system and even the ones who have not will not care about what you have to say so you are waisting your time. Unless of course you are just trying to make people angry because you have succeeded at that.

What the hell does all this have to do with theHL Box set being delayed? Ill tell u NOTHING

» You can't have an opinion on that

Only if you're talking about games can one system be "better" in your opinion. The fact is, one system is technically more powerful than the other, no opinions involved, so you might as well have left all those specs (which you know nothing about apparently) out.

Like NotNormal said, the 360's GPU is not based on the 1800 chipset, just stop talking.

You are a fanboy and a liar, coming from someone who has all 3 systems. The graphics processor in the 360 is NOT based on the 1800 or even the 1900 series technology it was designed new from the ground up for the 360 using unified shader tech that wasn't around for the PC at all until Nvidia's 8800 (which is more powerful BTW but is the first PC based unified shader design). Only half of the PS3's RAM is truely higher speed and that's linked to the cell not the GPU the GPU uses DDR3 just like all of the 360's memory. You can rest your case all you want but the bottom line is your here trolling since the article has absolutely NOTHING to do with what is in your flame bait. Just because you can't afford all 3 systems you shouldn't just come around and make stuff up for pointless arguements, totally unrelated to the topic.

i wish i could meet you, and we could discus this in person. both systems have strengths and weeknesses. it turns out i was rong about the GPU, and you were right. (BTW i cannot wait to get an 8000 series GPU for my PC they look soooo nice) i think what misled me was i read that it was based on the R500 chip set. and i think that the 1800 is something like the R580 or something. but i do not apreciate the "cannot afford all three systems." you have no idea if this is true or not. but i guess i had no idea about the grafix issue either

 » Valve... so slow

Valve is so famous for creating great games, and... delaying for ever their release... I hope I'll see the Orange box for PS3 before 2008...

 » The hidden details.

What Valve isn't telling you but some know is that part of the reason the game is being delayed so long is because they are having trouble porting it to the PS3. Rather, EA, the company fresh with Valves Engine are having trouble porting it. I wouldn't be surprised if the PS3 port was delayed beyond the PC and 360s port, seeing as Valve finished porting the games to the 360 long ago and we all know the games are created on the PC first.

And the other reason which I don't believe is the case anymore, they ended up redoing a large section of episode 1 because it wasnt what they were looking for.

Game testers hear more than you think. ;)
If you want to try the games early, I am sure Valve would love for you to come down and take a look. Ill be going back in the summer some time.
