Halo Wars1

Microsoft have announced the development of a new title for the Xbox 360 at the X06 event in Barcelona, Spain. Microsoft said that Ensemble Studios, well-known creator of games such as Age of Empires for the PC, is working on a new real-time strategy (RTS) game for the Xbox 360 called Halo Wars - of course based upon Xbox's franchise Halo Universe. Apparently the team have been working on Halo Wars for quite some time, and the the storyline takes place before Halo 1, when the Covenant forces first make contact with the UNSC.

There was no word from X06 on when to expect a release, but it will most probably come a few months after Halo 3. We at QJ also found the official website for Halo Wars up and running today. The website features a Halo Wars trailer, the screenshots which you can see in this article and an FAQ on the game for the 360. Halo isn't simply a First Person Shooter franchise anymore.

"Ensemble Studios, well-known creator of games such as Age of Empires for the PC, is working on a new real-time strategy (RTS) game for the Xbox 360 called Halo Wars" Does this mean that Bungie has nothing to do with it? I would feel safer if it were since they have already proved that they can make a wonderful RTS. God I hope this game plays like Myth.

» Sigh I can see failure comming again

RTS are not meant to be played with a controller.

With microsofts stand against using a keyboard or mouse for games. Then this RTS game will be a failure. RTS games need to stay off consoles, there hasnt been a sucessful console RTS game ever. Controls are always crappy, theres very little you can do about precision when trying to move a cursor with a joystick.

Unless they allow some sort of peripheral that allows the movement similair to a mouse, RTS games on a console will never be a success. RTS games are about micromanagement, even the most simplistic RTS games require that precision clicking be involved.

Also you cant expect the XBox360 camera to accuratly track movements, its just not gonna happen like they showed with gesture recognition because they used more then one camera in a confined, controlled space.

Im all for Halo Wars and I think its a great idea, but MS and ES need to realise that any control sheme thats focused around a controlleri s doomed to fail.

The controller will be the restricting factor in this RTS game. No person can say they can manage a RTS game faster on a controller then with a mouse. Not EVEN ONE. So I believe if they make this game for the Xbox360 and the PC then they will have to keep the leagues separate because even a pro Xbox360 RTS player will not be as good as a person on a PC.

They seem to be riding the Halo series into failure. It was a decent FPS game, not the best. It was a good comedy skit. But as a RTS, the game will either be too limited because of microsoft and their no keyboard and mouse stand, or it will be too slow because reflexes on a controller wont be able to keep up with the same fast pace RTS games that PC gamers are so used to.

Trailor looks cool and would be nice if thats what the graphics would look like when in a large scale battle. But in the end I think the console will be too restricting on a RTS game because of limitations.

Remember Starcraft on the N64, TOTAL FAILURE. People who played it already played the PC version and the N64 just wasnt fast enough.

ES has the ability to make great RTS games. They proved it with the Age of Empires series and other games. So the game may be a good game, but I dont see any future for an RTS game without a mouse and keyboard.

My prediction?

The game will be small scale. Like Warcraft 3, you dont have a massive amount of units and obviously tactics plays a large role. The game will be a slower paced RTS game so that people dont get flustered on not being able to keep up the AI. Trust me, on PC even a keyboard and mouse is too slow to keep up with the AI players.

And like Warcraft you will have heros that give bonuses and special abilities to offer. So think Warcraft 3, Halo style, but slower paced. Maybe a success but a huge success? not likely

Halo sucks I've played both of them. And here they go again.... releasing another Halo game into the hands of the Halo Ass Ramming Crew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 » 11>> 12>>

Its only popular because its an awesome party game.
I dont ever have a party with a PS2 because its multitap just doenst seem safe to me, and no real good party games for it. I usually have parties with moar than 12-14 people +.
Plus I enjoy the Sci-Fi story line, and the books.
Halo for xbox... wasntt that great, Halo for PC was awesome.
Halo 2 is great all around. Halo 3, Im pretty content, I can wait for it. Halo Wars? Im not much of a RTS gamer.
So what ever. I dont enjoy many games for PS2 anyways. Not my kind of games *shrug*

 » KICKASS!

***** u 11 why would someone buy something to be a slave to marketing wtf? Halo is just plain fun to play and has a really cool atmosphere and so far Halo 1 and 2 were both kickass games and Halo 3 and then this would completely make me satisfied. Althoguh I agree w/ #10, this should be released for the PC instead (better gfx and much better control of the game).

 » i dont think so

Vietone youve proved once again to be entirely wrong. Red alert for psx was HUGE and a lot of fun. Although I will agree that rts games normally dont work so great with a controller thats because the games were never designed to be used with a controller. This game is being designed to be used with a controller therefore it should have great controls. Also halo isnt only so popular because of marketing, look at the reviews for both the first and second halo they got excellent reviews from nearly all publications, if you want to talk about a game thats not as good as the hype it gets it would be DmC. Halo was great because it was the first pc-style fps game on a console, halo 2 imo left a bit to be desired. Besides this game it being put togther by one of the best rts teams in the world, it should be awesome. All you sony fan boys are just sad that M$ is kicking it into high gear whereas sony has nothing to show.

Whats wrong with a RTS on a console? Just cause u aint got no skills in holding a controller versus a mouse and keyboard?!! Another thing...SEE those USB ports?!! ADD a mouse and keyboard and...VOILA!!

 » Wow Vietone

What a waste of time, only to make yourself look stupid. Did you even read anything about the game? Bungie themselves said it's being built from the ground up with the Xbox 360 and it's controller in mind, and that it plays flawlessly.

Besides, there WILL be a KB/M set for the 360, mark my words.

 » Im stating facts

Im sure the game will play fine with a controller. But it will be a very "limited" RTS game.

Look at all the RTS games that have come out. Thats the standard for RTS games now. Age of Empires 3, Rise of Nations or Warcraft 3.

Do you think Halowars will even be half as good as those games? Dont even think about it if they base the game mechanics around a controller.

Play AoE3, RoN, WC3 and tell me you can be half as fast with a controller.

I didnt say the game will be a total failure, im saying that the game wont live up to the RTS name.

Red Alert for the PSX. I remember that game. It worked back then because the game isnt what you would call "fast" paced.

Anyone whos played RTS knows that "Speed" = "Skill". There is a direct relation in comparing a persons skill to their speed. Tactics and strategy id say make up 1/3 of a persons ability to play a RTS game and the other 2/3 are the speed that they can manage their units.

Handicap a RTS pro with a controller and give a middle rank player a keyboard and mouse and the middle rank player will easily win.

KB/M set for the Xbox360? Get real, Microsoft already said that games they make will not be supported by KB/M because thats not part of the console expierence.

Developers would never make FPS or any other precision games for KB/M because that would give certain players an unfair advantage and alienate players who dont want to use KB/M.

FPS are decent on consoles but "better" on PCs. Name one FPS game thats better then a PC FPS game in terms of controls? There isnt any.

 » *****

Vietone, you are an idiot. Just because it is "easier" to aim on pc doesnt mean it is better when it comes to fps controls. easy does not equal better, period. I play Half-Life 2 more than any other game I own and I have even been called a PC fanboy by some but god damn you are an ignorant pc elitest. I can aim just fine in halo and it is just as good of a game as any fps for pc (besides hl2). Even cross platform fps's are fine on console when done right. Look at CoD2, I have played the demos for both extensively and guess what? Although I can get more headshots in the pc version makeing it "easier" in some respects I actualy enjoy the 360 version more because I feel more manuverable when useing a the gamepad.

Just because no one has yet to do an rts right on a console doesnt mean it is impossible or that they will have to cut corners to make it work. For all I know this game could end up being a pile of ***** but you dont know that because you havent played it. You say you are stateing facts when you are actualy just blabbering about your slanted opinions. Get a clue.

 » Complaints

You people are complaining about how this is going to fail using the controller. Get a grip BFME2 worked really well for an RTS on a console, and i only played the demo. So no doubt this game is going to be great.

   by dsh (Unregistered) - 2006-09-28
 » veitone

Arcording to a friend of mine who has played BFME 2 on the 360 says rts works great. How they did the controls are very simply I hear and is easier maybe then even a keyboard and mouse. Go play the game yourself before you open your trap and say it wont work. It's already been done. It is not microsofts fault that sony sucks and can not make a good rts work and their machines.
