Rock Band - Image 1Konami recently made headlines when it surprisingly sued Harmonix over patent issues involving the music and rhythm game Rock Band (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii). Konami claims that Harmonix violated its patents on musical instrument-inspired controllers, forcing the latter to issue a public response.

A spokesperson for Harmonix said:

Konami's actions are extremely surprising. Unfortunately, successful products such as Rock Band can often become targets for baseless litigation, We have substantial defenses to this claim and intend to vigorously defend it.

Looks like both are willing to play some legal hardball over this issue. We'll keep you updated as more news hits the streets.

» That's right, let's hope the crappier of the 2 franchises wins.

Yeah...go crappy original song franchise whose appeal is only to otaku past the 2nd or 3rd Mix.

I guess Konami has to get *someone* to pay for those disastrous "Keyboard Freaks", "DDR Extreme", and "Para Para Paradise" games they released.

 » just rock band

sucked dude for the fact they didnt have alot of great music at all -regardless all the downloads-(for me in my opinion).and the drums were rediculousely stupid.
now bring in some mutha f**KIN double bass pedals and youve got your self a METAL BAND!! they need that kinda ***** in there.
the only great game harmonix did was guitar hero 2 witch kicked wicked ass.

Just buy a headphone splitter (http://www.nextag.com/headphone-splitter/search-html) and another bass pedal, and Tada!

 » ***** you DNAgent

Harmonix is an awesome company. You're probably the type of person who thinks EA is a quality company that makes good games. Go play your Madden.

 » Konami are money greedy

Its not about the games its about konami being *****s trying to get money. Harmonix started the whole Guitar hero fanchise and made rythem gaming big and out there, without them we probably wouldnt have rock band or guitar hero today.

   Re: cizzar - 2008-07-12
 » Yes my friend,

but if Harmonix did infringe Konamis patents, the judge won't care if they "made rythem gaming big" or not.
Anyways this whole Guitar Hero and Rockband ICanPlayMusicOnMyConsoleThing sucks

im not trying to be an ass but im pretty sure konami started the whole franchise of music games, Guitar Freaks and Drummania which as been going on in the arcades ever since 1999 you could look those up here this is guitar freaks http://youtube.com/watch?v+7ZOKZT2hvTc
and drum mania
http://youtube.com/watch?v+2nIemHZ0Fts
they are not trying to get money im pretty sure they are trying to sue the people who basically stole the ideas from them and after harmonix they are probably going after guitar hero only thing is that they have not released the new instruments out

 » Well see...

The fact of the matter is this, Guitar Hero and Rock Band are now making loads of money, however Konami was making rhythm games years ago, basically Konami wants a piece of the pie, and if their patents are infringed upon they are owed it.

   Re: jera27 - 2008-07-12
 » i agree

i agree and they just also feel left back because they only released their music games on the arcade as well as the Asian part of the world but if they would have released it for the consoles or at least arcades all around the world like ddr they would have made it massively big all around the world and harmonix and rockband would have never even started to develop music games it was a big mistake for konami

Agreed 100%.

» I think Harmonix can get away with-

1. Having a different interface.
2. Having 2 extra buttons and a whammy bar.
3. Being localized for an American market.

The experience with GH and GF are definitely different, unlike the case between ITG and DDR, which were too close to consider 'different'.

However, Harmonix should definitely get the hell out of Japan as far as sales are concerned. Konami's allowed to be sharky in their own waters.

Err, okay, it isn't GH. Disregard that. I keep forgetting *****.
