It would seem that some interesting news has come to light regarding the overheating issues with some Xbox 360's. Apparently, modcontrol.com (in conjunction with gamestore24.de and konsole24.de) has found what could be at least a partial cause of overheating in some Xbox 360 consoles. On the GPU heatsink, there is a heat conductive compound that helps transfer the heat from the chip to the heatsink. From the factory, this compound is covered with a layer of foil to protect it from dust an other contaminants that could reduce the conductivity. It would appear that on many Xbox 360's, this protective foil was never removed when the heatsink was installed, and could be a factor in the overheating issues experienced by many. Many users are now cracking open their consoles (this voids your warranty) and checking their systems, many finding the same problem. Although, it should be noted that some of the poeple that are finding the foil still in place have experienced no overheating problems. |

Please, for the love of god, leave 3 inches of airspace on all sides of any electronic device. Everyone i know that had an overheating problem solved it instantly by placing it on an empty shelf.
Take it off your tv, out from under your vcr, dvd player, amp, reciever, lamp, and take it out of the enclosed entertainment cente,r it may look good, but take it out, it runs cooler. same goes for the brick, leave it somewhere open facing up.
Ive had mine running for 16 hours now after i forgot to turn it off downloading the RR6 demo and it's MAYBE 90 degrees F. No way it's gonna overheat anywhere near that.
my friend's would overheat when he stood it on it's end because the biggest air-intake is on the right side (bottom when standing it vertically). I put my 360 ontop of my entertainment center laying flat and it's never overheated... I wanted to run it vertically but I'm too chicken....

Wow...so...the point?
Also, dmb...I have mine vertical...and Have had absoultly no problems what-so-ever...no scratched discs and has run since november.
Well, I really doubt that a small piece of foil like that would increase the heat conduction between the Heatsink & what it is mounted to by much. I doubt even a single degree in celsius. What that said though, that is still a pretty good screwup on there part. Alot of the overheating problems occuring are the fault of the users. As said by raytard, poor placement of the system is the leading cause of this. Leave the system in a wide open area with atleast a feet of clearence in every direction. Also a slow burn in of the system is an excellent idea. You don't want to put immediate stress on the system cus that can lead to overheating issues down the road as well. Been burning in computer CPU's & GPU's (Video Cards) for many years. It is a common thing to do to assure the best operation & a loer risk of burning out.

No...I think the ps3 is going to be taking up our back yards when we have the big BBQ when(if) it is released this summer.
you walked right into it diego. Had to poke fun at someone who thinks they can poke fun.
what the hell? isnt it supposed to go in my entertainment centre or next to my telly or wherever the hell i want to put it?
this is stupid. they overheat because they are made badly... i have an idea, cut a big hole in your 360 and then it will run cooler. they do have 3 cpus in a very small box, and a hulking gpu... it's not surprise it runs hot, but for microsoft to overlook it is a bit crap.
