More console-bashing ensues as online gaming execs got together at the BMO Capital Markets' Interactive Entertainment Conference. I bet Gabe Newell sat on his weight-worn chair chuckling in delight at the things they said.

Alex St. John, chairman of WildTangent, wasn't pulling any punches. "I think you're looking at the last generation of consoles," he said. "I don't think Sony of Microsoft is going to make another console." He also pointed out that World of Warcraft, a PC-only MMO, made more money than all Xbox 360 software in 2007.

Hilmar Petursson, CEO of CCP took another angle. "Really the only value proposition of the console was the lack of the piracy on the console versus the PC." He adds that PC games are much more piracy-resistant than packaged ones.

Well of course they'll bash the consoles - St. John's and Petursson's businesses revolve around the PC. But the CEO of PC and console game developer Trion World Networks Lars Buttler also cited console weaknesses versus the PC. "You have these huge markets in Asia, Eastern Europe and everywhere else that really don't give a damn about consoles," he said. "They're all PC online."

Eventually, it all boils down to powerful servers and broadband, which Buttler describes to be "the real platform." Citing an IDC report, St. John points out, "Only 15% of the next-generation consoles ever sold will ever be connected to a network... The vast majority of consoles will never be plugged into broadband by 2012."

Ken Ripley, EVP for sales for in-game ad firm IGA Worldwide came to the consoles' defense, arguing that the consoles are directed to a more general experience rather than core gaming. "As far as entertainment is concerned, there isn't too much more entertaining on that kind of home theater set-up than playing a console game," he said, talking about huge HD TVs and Dolby 5.1 digital sound systems.

 » I rest my case....

If you have to compare WOW to anything. Hey, what about all PC game sales VS all consoles game sales besides WOW? I bought about 12 consoles games (new and used) in 2008 and 0 PC games since 06 and consider that I am old school PC games players who started with Wing Commander 1, Ultima4 and Betrayal at Krondor (if you are old enough to recall those names)

» Well.... I'm not too sure on that.

I think these guys are worried. WOW Making more money - YES - because you have to pay every time you make a click on the *****ing game. That'll all be from the same Prilvilaged Geeks that have been playing it for years (and probably from the other Geeks that are playing their new card game). Every game store i walk into barely ever sells any copies of the game now, just some online cards, i believe. Wouldn't mind seeing the XBL memberships Vs WOW's.

Could really care less about either though, cause Sony looks after us with FREE online Play. All we gotta do is buy the game.

PC Gaming is making a surge back as of late - But consoles aren't going anywhere, cause people want performance, and to get performance out of a PC Will cost Thousands - Because windows drains a large portion of your performance prior to you doing anything - you're looking at about 3ghz Quad Core - 4 GB Ram and SLI/XFire Graphics (2X640mb Minimum) before you can compete with a PS3 (P3 733 can compete with XB360 ;P)

The other thing is the Setup - PC - Screen - Speakers - maybe a small sub. for me i got a 50" - PS3 - HDMI to 7.2 surround. Not really suitable for PC (take a lot of xtra Periferals), but great for PS3

I dunno - Guess they're just disgruntled McCain Supporters :P

 » Wishful thinking

What rubbish - it all comes down to price, not some utopian fantasy where everyone can afford a £1,000 + PC to play games on. Yes, the PC has its strengths, but consoles are affordable, simple and wildly popular. To say that consoles aren't popular in Asia is pure rubbish - look at the sales figures for crying out loud...

I own several PC's, and I don't play games on any of them. Last PC games I did play were Half Life & Unreal Tournament, both of which found life on the latest consoles since they're all online now.

For the few with the means, games like Far Cry and WoW are awesome, but they aren't console killers by any stretch of the imagination. Dream on fellas.
