As we previously reported, a beta tester states that playing your Xbox 360 horizontally could lead to the scratching of discs. Well now that does seem to be the case.

One of our users, MFDOOM, read the article and found out the following: since he received his 360 he had been using it horizontally. He had been playing both Call of Duty 2 and Madden 06 with the Xbox 360 layed down flat. Sure enough, both discs have been scratched, especially Call of Duty 2. He notes that he then bought Condemned and has since turned the Xbox vertical with no scratches yet. So a word to the wise, turn that 360 vertical.

I really want one, but I'm not gonna get it until these problems get ironed out!

Of course, the original xbox had problems with the cd drive at first too... Oh well, if I do get one, I'll just be VERY careful with it!

Strange, PS2 was scratching the disc too when it was playing vertically, now 360 scratch disc when playing game horizontally.

P.S. Godamn Microsoft ship some more system so i can get one. Its crazy, all the stores are out. They are not even getting shipment untill next couple of weeks. Whats going on. They cant even meet U.S. demand, now they are releasing the systems to Europe and Japan.

This is BS. I got my 360 monday morning (wal-mart.com sent it early) and have been playing it almost non-stop in the horizontal position and not one of my games is scratched at all. I just gave them all another going over nothing. Unless there are different versions of the 360 floating around something else is going on.

I dont get it either...all this talk about scratched disks from the xbox playing horizontally??? I am one of the lucky few who got one and it works perfectly! Yeah, I said it...works like a charm. No scratches, no over heating, and no freezing or unexpected shutdowns. This is a great console...and having an HD plasmsa helps. If you can afford it, get one. I have a philips 42 inch ambilight hd tv and with the xbox360 its gaming paradise. When I try it on my other tv...it looks really good...but not High Definition. I hear the dvd player sucks though...haven't tested that yet.

I think the reason they are being scratched (says in the manual as well) is that people must be turning the system from horizontal to vertical or vice versa while the disc is still in there. The manual says to take disc out first then turn the system to the position of choice. Ive played both ways and havent had any issues so far.

Maybe I should've bought the $3 EBGames warranty...I don't see why it would scratch games when it's horizontal and not vertical, unless the disc drive is designed to be used vertically which wouldnt make sense. I imagine we'll be hearing from MS pretty soon about recalls and 'precautions'. Just checked both my 360 games and none have any noticable damage - i've been using my 360 vertically.

Yeah, that is weird to think it would scratch a game horizontally. Guess im just used to being paranoid about having a system verticle...*caugh* PS2 *caugh caugh*

I keep mine horizontal and i get no such scratches on my games. This looks like an isolated incident. Care really should be taken before posting things like this on the front page without more research; hearing stuff like this day after day only adds to uneeded paranoia for people that already own an already working 360 unit (like my self).

Yeah, this is just scare-mongering. I think it should be moved to the forums, not on the main page.

Well it I think this should be know because i got a 360 and iv had mine vertically and had no problems but my freind told me about how his game was so scratched and then i get home and i see this and imeaditly linked the two so people should just take this advice and not risk it

Its most likely a horizontal related problem.

The laser is balanced up by several small cables so the lense can absord shock and be placed as close to the reading surface as possible.

I take aprt consoles all the time and replace faulty lasers because they get so close to the disk mess the lense up.

PS2 games have often had small rings on the data surface caused by the laser but it has never caused reading problems or scratches in my expierence.

I think the engineers designed it to be used vertically and this is why some have problems when playing horizontally.

These problems are probably caused by not enough testing on the current 360 design.

another reason why im waiting for PS3 i know i know this is the wrong forum, but i cant help reading about the xbox tree-sitty. i must say my friend had the disc sracting problem also we've been playin madden and call of duty non stop perhaps thats why, but the other guy said hes been doing the samw thing and no problems. perhaps they shouldve waited just a lil longer :)

I suppose all we can do is wait until we get the unit, and then see for ourselves. I don't think it's uncommon for first-generation consoles to have some issues, but I suppose that is what the warrenty is for... I'd say that's what we should expect for something that we cannot wait for!? (I'll tell you what it's like come Friday - I suppose others will no doubt comment on their experiences)

by (QJ. NET Staff) - 1999-11-30

sony is well known for faulty systems...and if you sit there and be a fan boy, "i'll wait for ps3" i gurantee you'll have probs when the 360 will be fixed.

by (QJ. NET Staff) - 1999-11-30

wow. i think thats what happened to perfect dark for me.
I brought it back and just said it came like that though and i was in the store for about a minute.

I have had the Xbox for nearly 2 weeks thanks to Pepsi and believe me, I've been playing it for extended periods with Kameo, PGR3 and COD2. I've also been running it horizontally thanks to the POS2's early problems with the vertical orientation. None of my discs are scratched. I think some folks machines have issues but to scare people into thinking it WILL scratch your disc is scare mongering at its worst.
I also know 3 other pepsi winners and we've had no issues like this (all of us run it horizontal). None of my friends who were lucky enough to buy one last week have encountered anything like the above either.

My x box 360 both freezes and scratches the disk. I have been using the system vertically only and the disk is so scratched it will not work at all.

by (QJ. NET Staff) - 1999-11-30

I have yet to have problems with my 360, I also think it is because you are switching positions while the game is in the system. I keep mine horizontal and I haven't had any problems yet. I already made the mistake with my PS2, though so if I see a problem I'll go vertical.

scare mongering bollocks
its to late when it happens to you

last night my **** 360 just put a groove in my disk for no reason at all about an inch from the outside of the disk and it was sat horizontal
