Nintendo makes 6 from every Wii sold - Image 1Call the Wii whatever you want, but there's no doubt that it's the best-selling console out in the market right now.

And just how much does it earn with each Wii sold? US$ 6. In comparison, Sony loses money with each PS3 sold, while Microsoft is just able to break even with the 360.

That's not the only thing Nintendo's got going for it though. They also make a killer profit from games, since they don't depend on third-party devs.

Essentially this means they profit more from their own games rather than licensing fees from third-parties. This is a huge deal, considering that the top three Wii games (Wii Play, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy) are exclusive first-party titles, and Nintendo first-party games account for 60% of all Wii games sold.

Sony, on the other hand, only sells 30% of PS3 games itself. Considering that the top three PS3 games are third-party games (Grand Theft Auto IV, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Assassin's Creed), and all multi-platform to boot, this cuts a huge chunk out of the profit pie. Microsoft sells 30% of Xbox 360 games itself.

Why are people still buying those things open your eyes and buy a real console!(PS3 ,360 or stick with PC gaming).
Not only is the Wii over priced(c'mon the hardware inside it cant cost a arm and a leg), but has very few games which people will continue to play since online is well crap and thats puting it nicely. The only use for mine now is the homebrew scene where i use it for emulators. Its even chipped, there arnt games even worth pirating!
Microsoft and Sony take care of there fans and are even loosing on every console sold. Cant wait untill the nex gen, see you at the bottom Ninty :)
Never buying a Nintendo console again!

 » The Wii Target Market

The Wii is mainly targeted at kids i believe, and there are a lot of them out there, hence the high sales. It may be good now, but i personally think that the wii will have the shortest lifespan. Still amazes me why people keep buying the same Mario themed games over and over again. They probably make a profit on them too as the technology inside aint anything new or amazing.

Thank god some people have some sense. I really did lose my respect for Nintendo ever since they released the DS. The thing that annoys me is the size of this 'casual gaming market' which seems to be undermining what should be the gaming industry's main focus, us, the fans, the more serious 'hardcore' gamers, not some stupid 5-year-old waiting to get the 511th Mario rendition for his birthday. The Wii is actually the WORST value console on the market, providing you with inferior tech for a fair bit of money, the 360's value for money is phenominal for the price, and PS3's is still damn good. Thank god Sony and M$ haven't lost sight of the TRUE fans. It's shame, because game in the old GBA days, Nintendo were awesome. (WOW, I can't believe I just made a strong criticism against Nintendo without using the word 'gimmick'!) :D

» It's all about the marketing....

I don't think that anyone can deny that nintendo is winning and in the end probably win the console "wars" for this generation. Unfortunately, it's not because they have the better console. It's because they did an awesome job with marketing it to people that normally wouldn't think of buying a game system.

For the real gamers out there, we wouldn't consider buying a wii over a ps3/360. We would buy it as a second or third console, especially if we have kids. Which is why it's still number one. There are alot of parents buying this console because they have kids and because it's cheaper (or was cheaper). The 360 is cheaper now but it doesn't matter, parents/grandparents look at all the kid friendly games on the wii and it's not a difficult decision to make. I'm sure that's what they are being told by the sales people too.

I think that when people talk about which system is winning, they shouldn't compare the ps3/360 to the wii. It's like saying that the toyota corolla is selling more than infinity. Totally different class of cars and totally different buyers. I'm sure that nintendo doesn't care who has the better system, they are making a crap load of money. But the real gamers out there know the difference.

I camped outside for 12 ho0urs to buy a wii. With 63 of my closest friends around me we had a blast.

I bought my wii, went home and played a great game of wii sports with my (then) 6 year old daughter and 4 year old son. Just swinging their hands around like lunatics they were able to be competitive agianst me in boxing.

Before that I tried to play need for speed most wanted on PS2 with my daughter. It was the most boring time I ever had in gaming history. I was not advancing myself in career mode, and was running into walls and doing laps backwards just so she could win the game.

Bottom line was (and still is), the wii allows parents to have a certain level off fun, while bonding with their children. My kids LOVE to play smash brothers with me, or mario kart, or even *gasp* dancing with the stars. Unfortunatly the 360 and ps3 will NOT offer that same entertainment factor.

That being said, I am now looking to purchase a PS3 or a 360, and I am not sure which one to get. I am leaning towards the 360 for the sole purpose that its hacked. I can softmod it and try the games out before I waste my money on a third party load of junk. If the ps3 was hacked I would be all over it. I like the controller much better and the first party titles interest me more (MGS4, gran turismo). But when all the 3rd party games are made on both and dumbed down to 360 graphics level anyway, there is no point to going with the ps3.

 » lol sure

'try' the game out before you buy. My guess is you will 'try' 20 games, and maybe buy 1. Outright piracy, and a bad example.

for just games 360 is good (although mainly shooters with a few exceptions). If you want true variety I think you should go for ps3. Its got a diverse lineup and more great games coming out. And you can be sure Sony will only support it more with great updates.

Also, you will save 50 bucks a year on internet and not have to wait 1 month after every RRoD.

» really up to you which console but

I like the line up of ps3 games for next year. Plus its unknown how much longet MS will have the xbox out there whereas PS3 wanted to go with the 11 year long road.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

The Wii is targeted as the casual gamer. There are more casual gamers then hard core gamers. Especially since most are BOTH. That is why the Wii stomped the competition in the ground this time around.

So much so, Microsoft is scrambling to be more casual. Even hard core 360 fans are pissed because avatars are a direct rip-off of Mii's. It's hilarious!

   Re: tobyo1 - 2008-12-02
 » @ISOHaven

When are people going to learn that these 'casual gamers' are the ones who are dragging the gaming industry down for the proper 'hardcore gamers'?

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-12-02
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

How do you figure?

1. Nintendo has NEVER been "hardcore".
2. The PS3 and 360 have PLENTY of "hardcore" games.

You mean the avatars?

   Re: lavino - 2008-12-02
» Mario is pretty hardcore for its genre

Who says Ninteno doesn't have hardcore game?
Mario is pretty hardcore for itself. Hardcore doesn't always mean had to be blood blood blood, kill kill kill, shoot shoot shoot. Hardcore means it is being serious as being/define itself (yeah it is kinda ZEN). Zelda is pretty hardcore of its own genre and so far noone can come close to making a game surpass it (and you can tell Fable completely trying to steal the idea from it).

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-12-03
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

There is no REAL definition of "hardcore gaming". It means what people what it to mean. Your definition is not how I see people use it. However, with that said, what I said earlier had nothing to do with "blood".

The average person does not view Mario as "hardcore".

Also, I never said Nintendo has NO hardcore games, I said Nintendo (in itself) has never been hardcore (generally).

There's also a difference between hardcore gamers and CORE gamers.

All these made up terms with no real definitions are grinding my gears!

» Some of this is bull...

well, published bull...I have a friend (in the industry)who says the 360 parts were so cheap that they were profiting at the beginning. Sony's probably losing money because most of the tech is new...the processor that is. $6 my butt. All the nin tech is old. $6 maybe after all the advertising they do.

Yeah, expect to see Sony to follow Nin's strategy closely...(well, 10 years of support). MS will just continue to use their OS strategy for the xbox.

   Re: damonous - 2008-12-03
 » Thank you!

I know a few others above posted some similar comments, but you've really explicitly stated it in a nutshell: if Nintendo is ONLY making $6 profit on each console sold (not including marketing costs), then someone there should be fired immediately. There's no way a simple DVD player running last-gen processors in a tiny flimsy plastic shell like that could cost so much. IMO, that's what the first sentence of this QJ article should have said: "How Nintendo prints money" "..by spending all their money on marketing last-gen antiquated hardware and convincing people to re-purchase the millionth version of Mario or Zelda". It certainly isn't about "innovation". --I mean, even they were smart enough to drop that original "Revolution" codename for the console: because if they hadn't, it would have been the running joke in the marketplace that there was nothing "revolutionary" about the "Revolution". Motion control is not new, and although some of their integration is 'interesting' .....it's a far cry from "next gen" by any stretch of the imagination.

» I honestly don't see why you hate the Wii so much

Ok, I admit, Nintendo's consoles being amongst the first I ever played, this MIGHT be a little biased...but not much. We have games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Galaxy, Zelda:Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, and the Virtual Console brings back the classics. True, the online play is crappy (no chat...yeah, I hate that fact too). But it has some nice extra features, like the Nintendo channel and said Virtual Console (of course, the games on there cost a fortune considering they're like 10-20 years old...). And the controller is unique, we all have to admit that. It's pretty acurate (1000 times better than the power glove on NES was), and when Nintendo makes games using the motion control, they are executed greatly. So all in all, I honestly don't see why some of you hate Wii so much.

 » Don't blame nintendo

They reanalysed their demographic, and were succesful. Nintendo knew they couldn't compete with MS or Sony's hard core fanbase and they already had the appeal of younger children and adult mindset that Nintendo is the console for their kids. Also take a look at it through a perceptual map Nintendo focused on a niche market where it had its core competencies and it has paid off. As a comment had said before Nintendo has marketed their product properly, and the gmaing market is not going down because of the wii if nto their developing kids to become hard core gamers in the future, and there will always be a hardcore fanbase so therefore a hardcore console will always be out.

» Wii isn't just for little kids

See, another thing: Lots of people think Wii is just for little kids. Apparently they've never heard of a little game called "No More Heroes". It's on Wii, and it's really gory.

   Re: Popson - 2008-12-03
 » ...

All the games I like on the Wii (Galaxy, SSBB) could have been done on any system(and they WOULD be better; more appropriate controller, higher performance, online structure). I agree, the Wii is 'unique', but I don't consider it "addicting" or "fun" for extended periods of time. The hardware is (obviously) last gen, and the interface is absolutely horrid. The online store is a mess to navigate, and the prices are horrendous. Almost all the 3rd party software is garbage also.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I don't like the Wii. At all. If it wasn't for the few first party exclusives (not to mention that Mario Kart Wii is terrible in comparison to Double Dash), there would be absolutely no reason to own a wii.

And yes, I own a Wii. It's chipped too. It's pretty bad when I can't even find games worth pirating. My close friend also has a chipped Wii, and we both have the exact same feelings.
