Xbox 360 tops Wii in hardware sales in Japan, PS3 came out 3rd - Image 1

Whoa, what was that? Did I just see a pig fly? According to the latest data from Enterbrain, the Xbox 360 outsold the PlayStation 3 and the Wii. Beating the PS3 on its home turf was enough to give me a double take, but to outsell the Wii? In Japan? Nice job. (Though I wonder if everyone in Japan already has a Wii.)

According to Enterbrain, the 360 dished out 28,681 units for the week of September 14. That's a huge achievement (no pun intended), considering they only sold 843 units the previous week. There are now 717,275 Xbox 360 consoles in the wild in Japan.

So what happened? It seems that Microsoft released a new 60GB package for the console, replacing the 20GB model, and introduced a price cut of JP¥ 5,000 (US$ 47), tagging the console at JP¥ 29,800 (US$ 284).

The PlayStation 3 is now at last place - though it's not the first time. The Xbox 360 beat it 2.5-to-1 for a week last August with the release of Tales of Vesperia. For the week of September 14, the PS3 sold only 8,050 units. The Wii sold 27,057 units.

I also had to do a double take. Was it really just a newer model 360 that helped sell all of these units?

 » well

I mean it's all about the price for most players. I know the guys that read this site are probably a little more hardcore and care more about the hardware/games/reputation but a lot of gamers only care about the price/games. The 360 is cheap and has a lot of good games on it. I know some of you will argue the ps3 has better exclusives coming etc which it has some great ones coming I totally agree but you can't say the 360 doesn't have a decent library by now.

 » Errr, Wrong.

Actually no, if you have read the article you would see that ToV was launched on august, and the recent boost is due to the price cut, and Infinite Undiscovery.

I guess that around december 25 (the launch date for white knight story in japan), the table will turn back again to it's orginal position.

 » too bad isohaven

even though he pointed out Nintendo and Sony weren't worried about the 360's price cut, it seems they NEED to be worried.

How will Nintendo cope? Wii price cuts, reducing system profits? Then they might need some quality games. They even admitted there will be no hardcore games for a couple years. Nintendo's top spot (even in sales) may be no more!

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

On brother!!! Who believes this crap?

A new SKU is hitting the market. That means vendors are going to blow out an older SKU. Which means it's a really good time to buy a 360 right now.

This "blow out" is going to cause a need to FILL the gap with the new model. Of course there is going to be a major UP SWING for the new model. There is ALWAYS AN UP SWING for a new model.

This is a ONE WEEK snap shot. That is about as WORTHLESS as a one month snapshot versus an entire quarter.

So, NOPE, try again Mr. Common Douche Bag.

Common sense and a grade school education have again failed you. Seriously, you need to get your money back from that BEST TECH SCHOOL you got your supposed education from.

1,000 units, woah!

Nintendo should be worried. But they aren't, that's why they and iso-flip-flop FAIL.

In the end, you STILL CANT back up your mouth. 1,000 unit in one WEEK? Wait for the quterly sales.

What do you give me? Some crap about flip-flop? Where's the flip flop?

How has Nintendo failed?

Do you ever have anythying real to say?

Tales of Vesperia? Maybe but i think i am going to blame infinite undiscovery on this one or maybe both of them working together.

 » This smells like trouble!

Sony needs to rethink their strategy on the pricing of the PS3, because this doesn't look good. Sony! Its time for a price cut. I don't want to see the PS3 in 3rd place. That is so wrong.

Peace out!!!

» the point is games and value for money.

The wii I would assume already has such a high density in japan that new customers are harder to find.
The PS3 on the other hand has already sold a large volume in japan. However Japanese people love games and gaming. The 360 doing a good price reduction along with games that are readily available is a good marketing move and the people have responded. I do not think that it is a fan base issue as in other areas as Japanese are loyal to japanese brands first and foremost.
However price must play a part. Many of the games released for PS3 that I find in the retail outlets are already in the sale and bargain bins for the 360. The issue here I think is that in the last two years 360 has had a very good run on games. Now that the 360 has a lower price point and so many games can be purchased for a lower price than their PS3 versions many gamers who are not fanboys but just love games can get a good deal and as for exclusives, well, own both you play both and are not excluded.

 » OMG!

This is certainly someting I'd never expect to happen in Japan, I thought they'd be more loyal... at least it's only cause the price has been slashed significantly. I agree the 360 has a much btter library of games and the online content is great but at a price.... I think this is just going to be a blip in the sales for the 360 in japan, once PS3 has a few more titles out and improve they're online service they'd easily work it up the table.... at least a price cut will be on the cards for the PS3 if this keeps up.... I definatly think if sony cut only £49 off the price it would boost sales greatly, I also think it would do the same in N. America and Japan.
