Solid Snake - Image 1Hideo Kojima's interview came and went. It was a long interview, and he said a lot of things about the PS3. But he said a few things about the Xbox 360 that drove people wild. Now, a couple days later, let's look at it with cool heads and realistic expectations. Let's revisit what he had to say about the Xbox 360.

In response to the question, "Is Metal Gear Solid 4 still planned as an exclusive PS3 game? Do you have any interest in Xbox 360 development?" he simply said:

Well, yes, I do have strong interest in creating something for the Xbox 360. In the US and Europe, it is selling, and I think it will sell a lot this year as well. I'm a fan of Gears of War as well, it's very interesting.

And then in the next paragraph he went on to talk about making games for PC. What do you make of that?

  1. The voice of reason says: It's no big deal really. He just said he's interested. It's a safe answer: he's interested, but he's not promising he'll make something for the Xbox 360.
  2. The squeal of fanboyness says: OMG. Kojima's in love with the Xbox 360. He's going to make something for the Xbox 360. It'll probably be MGS4.
While our minds tell us to go with option one, there's no harm in hoping for option two. After all, Kojima has admitted to this much:

Sony has not really spoken with us about their online plans. What I have is Metal Gear Online, and I'm always thinking of how we can conduct this plan on the Sony platform.

One example is the PSP game Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. That's, in a way, one our plans for MGO that we have in mind. It's not about the platform. In an ideal MGO world, no matter what the platform is - PC, Xbox 360, PS3, handheld, Wii - we wish that we could create a kind of community where everyone can play. That's kind of the MGO way of thinking.

Kojima dreams of bringing the gaming community together under the banner of Metal Gear Online. That's something we wouldn't mind becoming a reality.

 » key words: "strong interest"

I don't expect option 2 to be true either, but saying that you have a "strong interest" in the 360 is not just a safe answer in my opinion. Personally, I don't care much about the MG series, but I'm curious to see what he comes up with if his interest evolves into an actual title. I know MG would be a good thing for the 360, specially in Japan, but I'm happy with the titles we've seen so far and the ones to come.

 » 360 is Lame

Why is it everytime a Sony game may go to 360 it's like the top story on all video game sites? At first I thought MGS coming to 360 sucked but now I think that it will show how lame the 360 is. Brace yourself for the first ever port from PS3 to 360. I can see it now 8 people on screen and 20 DVD9's, this game is going to max out one Blue Ray disk.

 » lol you know nothing

so you will be happy to see MGS 4 with a 3 color palette no 1080p. waiting delay after delay. lets hope it looks as good as all the hype sujest or else its going to be a sour time. i have a ps3 and im in no way obsessed with this game. something tells me by reading all the interviews this guy offers that he has little to no clue on wtf hes doing. one interview he says "i see no point in HD graphics" then someone else says its going to be 1080p like all the sony games.blah blah
when someone openly says they have interest in moving in other directions, how can their hearts truly be on something they are creating now.

This story will be more popular then anything related to Halo (the fanboy God) very soon. 360 fans are unhappy with their current game offering.

 » ps3 is a failure, 360 owns

its not that we are unhappy, but its the fact that every good title on ps3 is, for one reason or another, coming to 360. making the choice of owning a 360 just that much better. so what are you gonna say when it comes to 360? "mgs is on ps3, thats why i bought one!" "yea, well mgs is now coming to 360, even though the 360 already has a ton of great games"...tell me who looks stupid now...

   Re: qbix (Unregistered) - 2007-01-23
 » Are you serious?

Well, let's see. Gears of War, Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Oblivion, Splinter Cell DA, Rainbow Six Vegas, GRAW, Condemned (very under rated game), NFS Most Wanted (better than Carbon IMO), Geometry Wars, Assault Heroes, and I've heard Blue Dragon is also very fun. So there you have it.

You'll be able to play a few of these titles on your PS3 nearing April but they are currently available for the 360 and some of these have been around for more than a year. Not admitting the fact that 360 has good titles out is just plain ignorant. As for MGS4, I'm sure it'll be a great game and I wouldn't downplay it, however, it won't make me feel like I'm missing out. Not with the amount of good games already out for the 360... and the ones to come.

   Re: gh (Unregistered) - 2007-01-23
 » Wow you're dumb

So take all those games qbix mentioned, and compare them with the one PS3 has: Resistance: Fall of Man. If 360 gamers are "unhappy" with their current games, PS3 fans must be F*CKING PISSED to the point of riot

» I Will Prove You Wrong

I could care less about MGS4. And if I was unhappy with my game offerings, why would I then have over 40 retail games for 360 (not counting any of the BC games from the first XBox) and 35 Live Arcade games? I planned on getting a PS3, but as of right now, that's not going to happen. I have no need for it, unless I want a cheap Blu-Ray player. (And from what I hear, as a Blu-Ray player, it's not as good as a stand alone player). So if I ever do get one, I'll watch movies on my PS3, and play games on my 360.

 » MGS4 size issues

Kojima has already told sony that MGS4 is going to need a double-sized Blu-ray disc to fit everything on one disc. It would take way too many discs to port to 360.

Come on stop making up things now.WHAT HE SAID WAS -

If you ever made an Xbox 360 version, would you find it difficult to work with because it uses a standard DVD?

Kojima: Its not necessarily challenging or difficult, its just a matter of how we do it. It might be a couple of discs, or possibly a new form of dual-layer.

» rofl at the blu ray comment

Does anyone here no what all blu rays space is being used for at the moment? Anyone? Well I will tell you, its used to put basically the game on twice. Thats right, the same data repeated. Why? Well sonys blu ray read speed is much slower than dvds read speed and so in order to speed up loading and disk access while in game, game creators are being forced to duplicate data.

So mgs4 if it did come to 360 would be on one dvd9 I assure you. Because its already going to be repeated twice on the ps3 lol.

   Re: zecky (Unregistered) - 2007-01-23
 » oh and also

also xbox 360 supports hardware decompression. Enchant arm for the 360 was originally on 3 dvds. Then MS showed the dev team how to use all the compression routines and it was down to one dvd with space to spare. Blu ray and sonys ps3 is a very erm wasteful technology, it has no compression, no good compression anyway, even blu ray movies use an old outdated mpeg2 codec. So basically the reason why mgs4 requires a dual layer blu ray is because A: duplicated data for read speed and B: No real compression. So sony fanboys go and rant all you want about how good your ps3 is. But its not just me that thinks the ps3 is a flop and a waste of money ask most of the developers working on it.

   Re: wyo (Unregistered) - 2007-01-23

Agreed zecky, 100%

   Re: CeCiL (Unregistered) - 2007-01-23
 » Ur a tool...

This is great news for 360 owners.

But MGS4 won't be ported to the 360. It's designed purely for the PS3 spec's - Cell, SIXAXIS, PSP and Blu-Ray (Kojima wants a double layer BD for this game lol!)

He will do an exclusive 360 title if anything. An MGS4 port won't do the game justice...it'll suck.

Duplicated data is a brilliant idea to increase loading time - sure a 2x BD-Rom isn't the best thing in the world.. but having 25+GB of storge to give developers the duplicating possibilty is a huge leap forward and alot better than cramming a 25gb game onto a 9gb disc.

The 360 is a great machine, i love mine fantastic games coming out this year...but don't get your hopes up about MGS4.

Ask most of the developers? There's like 200 more developers working on the PS3 than any other Console... noob.

At the end of the day ... Fanboy's aren't gamers ... they play the hardware and not the game... Sucks to be you.

What video codecs will Blu-ray support?

MPEG-2 - enhanced for HD, also used for playback of DVDs and HDTV recordings.

MPEG-4 AVC - part of the MPEG-4 standard also known as H.264 (High Profile and Main Profile).
SMPTE VC-1 - standard based on Microsoft's Windows Media Video (WMV) technology.

That is the same compression as hd-dvd

Blu-ray
Data transfer rate (data) 36.0Mbps (1x)
Data transfer rate (video/audio) 54.0Mbps (1.5x)

HD-DVD
Data transfer rate (data) 36.55Mbps (1x)
Data transfer rate (video/audio) 36.55Mbps (1x)

 » wot?

There is not like 200 more developers working on the ps3. There are many many small japaenese companies working on the ps3, but the actually developer list of major developers is pretty much even. And im not asking wether they are developing for it, its that they hate it. I have 2 mates in the business and they have basically said ps3 dev kits are shocking. And so is the support. Hell even gabe newel from valve said it. And for all you no the 360 version could already be in development by another team. Lots of companies are standin up and taking notice of the 360 and wiis rising market share. And lots of them are deciding to do games for them. And duplicating data is a horrible idea, if your telling me that overcomplicating file structures is better than on the fly hardware decompression then your a noob and an idiot. All developers need to do is build the game, take all of thier content, compress it, then the 360 does all the rest.

God some people.

 » As you can see

Hes interested in making something for the Xbox360. But it wont be MGS4 and ill explain why.

Hes already passed the limit of the 25GB Blu-ray and wanting the 50GB.

Its tailored to the PS3 and therefore would require months of work to get it to be acceptable on the Xbox360.

You will lose alot of the gameplay because the Xbox360 has no motion sensing or tilt sensing.

its probably going to be some other game coming to the Xbox360, but the way MGS4 is turning out, putting it on the Xbox360 would require it to be made worse.

   Re: dh (Unregistered) - 2007-01-23
 » Um, no

You will not lose a lot (alot is not a word) of gameplay because the 360 does not have tilt or motion sensing. I have a PS3, the tilt crap is a gimmick (and in most cases, a rather poorly executed gimmick), and I always use the sticks instead.

Since online play between the PS3 and 360 will never happen (I think that's what he meant, he's pretty cryptic), maybe he'll just give up on that idea and bring MGO to the 360, since Live is still vastly superior to the PSN.

I agree, the tilt on the sixaxis is a gimmick. I sold my ps3 because I just could not get use to the controller. The L2 and R2 triggers are very uncomfortable to use and I think we can all agree that they should've swapped the D pad and the left analog stick (like the 360 controller which is by far the most comfortable controller next to the wiimote). If MG4 ports over to the 360 then i'm sure it'll be a great port because microsoft would not kill their one chance at basicly destroying the ps3. I'm sure they would use compression (as zecky put it) to lower the resolution. And I would be so happy if I could play MGS4 without the tilt functionality. I adore my PS2 but atleast for the next year, the PS3 is just a paper weight. 3 months and all they have to show for it is RFOM and a few half decent demos.
