Xbox 360 controller redesign - Image 1

Over at the Leipzig Games Convention, a new controller for the Xbox 360 has been spotted. Reports say that the redesign isn't all that substantial. No waggling components or some such. The change mostly lies in the D-Pad, supposedly making it more responsive than before.

Unfortunately, we can't seem to locate any pictures of the new controller just yet (actually, we might not even need pictures because it's been said that the controller really looks pretty much the same as the standard one), but reports coming in from the showfloor state that the redesign is sporting "an eight-way input taking place of the previous four." This might be a relief for some of you who've got some sticky D-Pad, yes?

The new controller was spotted at a Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 demo booth, and is expected to be released some time the game. If that's so, we can probably see the new 360 controller as soon as Autumn or Winter this year. It's also been noted that the redesign of the controller was implemented with the upcoming release of Street Fighter IV in mind.

Can't beat the PS3 D-Pad

   Re: Viphid - 2008-08-20
» Oh you mean the one they copied from the SNES?

Look, the d-pad on the 360 is an improvment over the origional. At least they didn't straight up jack Nintendo's design for their controller. And with all due respect, Streetfighter was always easier to play on the Dreamcast than it ever was on any Playsta. If Microsoft wants to make improvments to their controller then let them. I seem to recall a certain PS1 controller that didn't even have analog sticks, or rumble. Now PS3 shoulder buttons have trigger style nubs. Where'd they get that idea from? ;) Companies learn over time and improve over time. Just get over it. And yes, it may in fact be better than your precious PS3 d-pad. You've never used it and seeing your fanboy status, you may never get to. Sorry for you buck-o.

whether there was and improvement in the 360 pad over the Spad (or indeed original pad) on the original xbox is not what's in question... The PS3 d-pad is a pleasure to use, and that's not fanboy babble, it's the truth.
At the moment playing something like bionic commando where the D-pad is practically a necessity, the difference in control is worlds apart...

Sure, the PS3 D-pad is based on the Snes controller (anyone who knew their console history would know that the original playstation was intended as an expansion for the snes, but Nintendo turned it down after the commercial failure of the Sega CD), but what's wrong with that? The snes had an excellent d-pad design, so why change it? it's like condom designers making triangular johnnies so as not to copy their competitors, totally needless.

Various controllers take different aspects from each other (indeed, the 360 controller was like a hybrid between the Dualshock and the Gamecube controller), but you know what? I don't care.

In any case, I'm glad the 360 has seemingly changed their controller at long last.

else about the PS3 controller feels light, crampt, and cheap...

 » Viphid... he's right...

You can't beat the PS3 D-Pad because it was a redesign of the SNES controller. Which is the controller that all designs are pretty much based on today. And the 360's original D-Pad is a disaster. Hotkey's in Oblivion was almost an unusable feature. Then again, it's not as bad as the GCN's D-Pad.

I hope Sony eventually comes to their senses and switches the D-Pad and left analog stick's positions. Anyone who says differently is most likely a Sony fanboy and never owned a Xbox, 360, GCN, Wii, or Dreamcast.

» Who the hell cares it can or cannot beat PS3 D-Pad

If you simply cannot use the PS3 controller on a Xbox360. This is a topic for xbox360 controller so go cheer about your PS3 D-Pad in PS3 topics. Any improvement is always welcome no matter it is for xbox360 or PS3 or Wii etc.

Thank you for making my point. Yes, we're talking about the improvment over the Duke controller or the S-Controller's D-Pad. Sony's d-pad is only "a pleasure to use" because it's what you've had grown accustomed to. I got used to triggers instead of shoulder buttons thanks to the DC and even Sony yoinked that idea. Now, I could never pull off the moves in a Mario game with that stunted PS1 or 2 controller as I did with an SNES cont. Truth is, we may never get control like that again. But time moves on and even Nintendo doesn't have a controller like that any more. So we move on. Braid was amazing and I had no trouble with the d-pad, Pac Man Championship Ed is fantastic with either analog or d-pad. My whole beef is with this "gamer" saying "it'll never beat the PS3 d-pad". How does he even know? I'm just laying a bit of knowledge and if you aren't a "fanboy" you'd understand. The difference isn't worlds apart, there's some sticking issues but if Microsoft is trying to improve their design, good for them. I'm mearly trying to point out that Sony's design for their controller is copied and it "should" have a "better" design because they did clone it from a great controller. I'm sorry but putting handle bars on an existing design and calling it unique is ignorant. We all know what happens when Sony starts to think outside the box and make a controller on their own. Boomerangs anyone?

 » I'm disappointed

that it's a limited release and sounds like it will packaged with the ProEvolution Soccer exclusively... won't be picking this up till it's just another peripheral but I'm lookin forward to a more accurate Dpad...

 » Here's the new D pad!!

http://gizmodo.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2008/08/ss_preview_360controller.jpg.jpg

the difference is that the pivot underneath it is bigger making it more precise and it also is now 8 ways rather than 4 ways. BTW the actual Dpad kinda looks more defined and closer to the regular + shape.

IMO it still looks like crap and I'm not excited about it, it's still one of the worst Dpad.

 » ok

frenchman:
i don't see a single difference between that image and the one i have.

the feel of the Dpad is fine to me, but don't get me started on the psp "analog"...

it would be nice to play streets of rage 2 with a Dpad as intended... the 360 Dpad is basically useless in that game...

   by The Frenchman - 2008-08-21
 » rolly polly....

precisely... it's minor changes...

and if you think the dpad is fine you clearly haven't played enough...

I'm against this piece of crap since november 2005.

look at all the cheap brand controller since PS1 era, many of them use a pivot for their Dpad, which sort of works like a joystick... problem with that is that a Dpad would normally be used to have more precision over direct functions, like you wanna input "left" and not "Up/left/left" (like a compass... it would be north/west/west)

I can't count the times I wanted to select my lancer quickly in gears and fell on stupid smoke grenades.... this Dpad is HELL.

don,t get me started on the inverted analogue sticks... yeah fine for shooters... but by nature your hand will not naturally point really UP with the left stick, it will kinda push to the right at the sime time, to go in straight line with your wrist. (problem for few games, but still an annoyance)

anyways, if theyre ever fix the attrocious dpad it'll allready be a start.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

So... is this where someone comes in and rips MS a new one for NOT HAVING done this from the beinging? How dare they FIX it later on and force all 360 users to have to buy all new controllers. How dare they design a product outside of what everyone else already does....blah blah blah....

I just love it when MS fanboys have to eat their own BS.

» pfff xbox360 controller is the shiznit

Look ps3 controller is like a skinny controller with some crap new features on it, xbox360 controller is big but got more grip and comfort around ur fingers, the only thing crap from sony is from playstation 1 its always the same old model over years and years, xbox made a controller change the way people are gonna like not the same crappy controller from gray went to black, useless crappy controller ps3 ,in other words u can fix xbox360 with ur bare hands and ps3 is just for someone ur gonna pay to fix it,think wisely what console u buy.
