European Battlefield - Image 1

The Christmas season is really starting to pick up steam. The lights are out, the decor is hung and the console sales are getting frenzied (or as frenzied as they can be with the whole financial crisis thing). Already claiming an early lead in the European theater is Microsoft's Xbox 360.

Despite Sony releasing its strongest ever line up of PlayStation 3 titles, the Xbox's September price cuts appeared to be enough enough to lure away potential buyers. According to Microsoft, they're outselling the PS3 more than two to one in the UK alone since the price drop.

Other "swing states" that were previously Sony holdouts are also starting to jump on the Microsoft bandwagon. Chris Lewis from European Interactive Entertainment explained:

In Italy, we were double PS3’s sales last week. In France and Germany we are at or better than PS3 consistently now. We dominate in Russia and the Nordic countries and in Spain – a traditional Sony stronghold – we’re now outselling PS3. It bodes incredibly well for our Christmas prospects.

Of course, to temper the Microsoft spin machine, I should probably add that the PlayStation 3 is still significantly ahead of Xbox 360 sales in Europe overall and not just in the last few weeks. One has to wonder though, how long is Sony going to be able to stay on top with the kind of performance Microsoft's been showing lately?

» I dont think sony has ever been on top

with the next-gen consoles...

Sony's line-up is the best its ever been, true, but it was as stupid idea to release all the games at the same time. They are all basically stealing sales away from the other. I want Far Cry 2, LBP, R2, and Mirror's Edge. But I can only get one so I'll prolly go with buying LBP, renting Mirror's Edge.

n If they were released at different times, I prolly would've gotten them all.

Well it is the holiday season. I think they'll be trying to sell consoles more than anything, thus providing us with many incentives like those awesome games

Which of the 360 sku's is selling the most? The Arcade? The most stripped down console ever released in recent memory. It'll end up biting them in tthe ass in the end when they find out that they missed out on the console's best features, but then again I can see mommy and daddy buying one for 8 year old jimmy who probably gives a crap about them and I see it happening many times over.

i won't argue the arcade is the least value laden version... but most stripped down in recent history? because it's missing massive storage?

seems to me microsoft is adding features and value to it's system and sony is removing them... the only difference anymore is hdd space, and if you buy one over the other for that... that's just as bad as buying an arcade unit.

» It only doesn't seem stripped down...

because 360 never had all the features that PS3 has standard...

The main two being Wi-Fi and the ability to play the newest HD movies....

One of those options is no longer available on 360 and the other is ridiculously overpriced....

Then there are little things like the ethernet being 1 gigabit, webbrowser, linux, life with playstation, free online play...

The only thing sony has removed is BC and memory card readers (which were kinda dumb in the first place)

I was also talking about HDMI and wireless controls both of which were standard fo every PS3 sku.

@Shatterdome - Well put. For $9 you can get your own card reader and plug it in if you really need to have one.

The 360 has a ridiculously overpriced assessory? What? According to the 360 zealots only Nintendo does that....who would have guessed!?!?!?!?!

 » Microsoft selling more

200$ consoles than Sony's 400$ consoles. Should they be happy at all ? What would happen if a cheapo version of the ps3 sold for 200 bucks ?

Monthly sales figures bounce back and forth. MS's statement doesn't mean much.

Microsoft has sold more then Sony since august world wide but they havne't "shaken" then off yet and they haven't done anthing to kill the gap Sony closed from their initial first year sales.
