Xbox 360 - Image 1I'd prefer to not even touch this with a 20-foot stick, given the choice, but if Microsoft insists on making a statement about Sony's recent announcement, then so shall we report about it.

Just earlier, Sony finally revealed their March 31 announcement: they're slashing the price of the PS2 down to US$ 99. Microsoft marketing VP Chris Lewis spoke to Games Industry about Sony's latest announcement:

This move from Sony at the end of the PS2’s life cycle is not unexpected.

We believe, however, that the future lies in the growth of current generation consoles and Xbox 360, as the fastest growing games console last year, with sales up over 80 per cent, will continue to drive the market.

Xbox 360 has clearly demonstrated that the combination of the right price, blockbuster games as well as the market-leading broad connected entertainment content available through Xbox Live will continue to resonate with the ever growing needs of today’s consumers.

I wonder if Aaron Greenberg will also make a statement about this...

» I'm surprised.. well not really but..

Now I highly respect the Playstation 2, I own the original model and it's well known it's the best selling console to date. However I think 99$ is way overpriced for a last gen console, I know prices aren't geared for smiles but seriously. The console is nearing 10 years of age. Cut it to $70, and they'd still make a $55 profit.

Oh and I know that wasn't the point of the article.

 » Funny

As fast as it is still selling the $99 price tag is going to be great at keeping the PS2 sales where they are. (though I do agree that it is overpriced for a last gen, the sales are there to support it).
What I find funny is that Microsoft obviously sees the PS2 as competition if they are commenting on the new price point, otherwise they wouldn't have said anything.
Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft all do this... Just when the spotlight is off of them for a microsecond, they have some irrelevant comment about how their hardware is better. (i.e. though the DSi sales are up the PS3 is blah, blah, blah. or though the psp has a new model the XB360 is blah, blah, blah.)
Same Old Song and Dance.

 » Actually

What's really funny is how some don't understand the reasoning behind them responding to it.
Gblo6689 the reason why they comment about news their competitor releases is cause it's called Business. They want to state their hardware is better and is perfect for the needs of the gamers out there. Would you rather see them praise and suck the competitors d!ck based off their announcement or would you rather them make a statement reassuring that their title will benefit more gamers? Cause I for one find it laughable to suggest they'd do the latter. I see nothing wrong with them commenting, and MS didn't do anything crazy. It's when either of the 3 makes ridiculous fanboy remarks to the other that gets me a little upset.

@Brant -
True, it is nearing it's 10th year but you have to remember it's still on the market. I think lowering the price to $70 should only happen after Sony stops selling them out in the market and focuses on PS3. They did it with PS1. They still want to get the best or highest amount of profit for their best selling 'home' console in history with the best library to date.

This guy does have a point. PS2 is old news and $99 is still expensive. But the PS2 is still selling so we can't really say anything. MS is a marketing genius and Sony should really learn from what they did; except for RRoD. But RRoD does make MS money too.

 » Microsoft = noobs

Instead of keeping the Xbox 1 alive they decided to charge their customers for everything possible. Sony keeps the PS2 alive which is still selling a lot of consoles and does not charge their customers for online, themes, ect.

The news does suck but Sony is pretty good at making money without pissing off their fan base.

...You know the PS3 costs $400, right? That may have pissed off just a few people.

 » Xbox 1

I can play my Xbox 1 games on my 360. Can't say the same for the new PS3 I bought. Perhaps Sony should do something like this instead of charging me to play last-gen games?

   Re: blkthunda - 2009-03-31
 » Orlyeh

You do know that people who bought the PS3 that have BC paid like 600 bucks for it. And now the PS3 is 400 and the PS2 is 99 bucks so it's still a deal. And you can't play every xbox 1 game. I'm still waiting for them to update their list so I can play Sudeki.

   Re: thefinalhero - 2009-04-01
 » @Ohrlyeh

Should have kept your PS2 then.
My PS3 is for the most part backwards compatable. But the price is still worth it for the PS2. The PS2 has the best game library to date, so picking one up when the games for it are so cheap now is great. Can't say the same for my original X Box...yep...Halo, Fable, Unreal Championship and Morrowind...only games I played for the original X Box that were any good.
@Flag-That's not that bad of a price. I'm 19 and work a minimum wage job, I could still afford mine. The cost of college pisses me off a lot more.

You don't want to touch this with a 20-foot stick, but yet you blow up what was really said with a title for this article's headline.

They said that it wasn't unexpected, and that their plan is to continue going forward with current-gen. They didn't say it was dumb to hype up big news for a last-gen announcement... they didn't even say it was bad move... but somehow you got that MS was "dissing" Sony? Really, QJ?

Things have been said in the past, but this appears harmless to me. I agree with the guy above that said that MS is just trying to keep their head in the news by saying something, anything, but I definitely wouldn't take this as any kind of an insult...

"Did you hear what MS said about Sonys PS2 price cut?! They said it was expected and they're focusing on the current gen!"

"Oh snap! It's ON now!!"

"... but somehow you got that MS was "dissing" Sony? Really, QJ?"

I don't know what article you was reading, but I didn't get this from reading it. And apparently you missed the beginning part of the article, maybe I tell you the point of the article.
This is news, they made a statement regarding Sony's announcement of the PS2. This is a news site/blog. And news get's posted on here. Put two and two together, and you get news submitted on a site which post news; such as this. Don't like it, don't read it. But don't blow the article out of proportion cause you rather try and find some hidden fanboyism where it's not there.

Microsoft is right about one thing, who cares about a stupid PS2 pricecut, I wanted a firmware update not a damn PS2 pricecut. But that damn 360 is still a piece of crap. Even the PS2 is better.

Ermm, may I remind you of the Wii?

   by ptspyder - 2009-03-31
» Microsoft should care about it

PS2 sales in japan were right with the Xbox on the last media create hardware figures. With it being $30 cheaper, Xbox will be outsold by a last gen console. Dont take things for granted microsoft.

   Re: WarNerve - 2009-03-31
 » Good point

I wouldn't be shocked if this tipped the scales in ps2 favor again when the figures come out. May even see a small difference worldwide as well ,but no doubt it would be short lived. As far as my expectations on what the announcement would be ,this didn't even make my wish list. (sigh)
   by automaticsnow - 2009-03-31
 » ....

One of the only reasons that the ps2 still sells, is because it is the only system available brand new on the market that plays ps2 games. Frankly I think the system should be 70 max. Additionally ptspyder its a proven fact if its an american console it wont sell in japan.

   Re: WarNerve - 2009-03-31
» But it still gets sold.

I'm not a big fan of MS ,but I give them props for the numbers they generate in japan.
