Xbox UK chief doesn't believe Sony's 20m PSN figure - Image 1Two months ago, Sony reported that they had a total of 17 million users on the PlayStation Network. A few days ago, they reported that the number has jumped to a whopping 20 million.

Possible? Sure. Probable? Microsoft finds it highly questionable.

Stephen McGill, Microsoft's head of gaming and entertainment in the UK, states that "there's questions over what does Sony's numbers really mean." Also:

When we talk about our numbers we feel they're active users who are actively engaged in all the forms of entertainment we offer on Xbox 360. I think if you look at the comments made on the forums, or the comments made by analysts at Screen Digest then there's questions over, well what does Sony's numbers really mean? Are they duplicates? I think there's a lot of questions there.

All I'm really worried about is, I know I'm the largest online video on demand service in the UK, we are worldwide, we've got a great online service the others can't come close to. They're not right now.

When you think of our heritage as a company Microsoft has proven we are probably the only company in the world that can offer great online experiences for millions and millions and millions of people. And that's what we do every day with Xbox LIVE.

Sony do what Sony want to do and if they think that's right for their business to say those kind of numbers then they can do and will do whatever they want to do. Do I believe them? No.

Aside from the startling 3 million jump, Microsoft may also be referring to the last time Sony gave out such a huge number of registered users on PSN. Back then a lot of people also questioned it, which led Sony to clarify that their stats included PSN accounts for the PS3, the PSP, and their Web site.

This guy really likes the word 'do' doesn't he?
If Sony say they've got 20 million users on the PSN, they probably mean that they have 20 million registered profiles (I myself have three). So quoting such numbers is largely pointless in my opinion. But I doubt that they're lying about the numbers, what reason would they have to do that?

   Re: damonous - 2009-03-09
 » Funny: M$ questioning another company's integrity

I agree. ...Just what are they all smoking over at Microsoft? --They make it sound like their 'service' is setup 100 miles differently than Sony's. The only real difference is that M$ wants you to Pay to Play online. But, the same rules still apply: you want to create 50 Silver user ID's on your single Xbox 360 console? --no problem. If I recall, some games (like Gears) even FORCE you to create another Silver account just to play local co-op. (So who's foolin' who?). But, this is really making M$ cry a little puddle now, because once Sony starts having several million PSN users over M$ ---guess who's going to start demanding that M$ stop charging people for Online? ....The Devs and Publishers, that's who. The 'ol gravy train has put in its latest schedule, and it's taking Seattle off of its regular route soon. ...You gotta' love the imbecilic wordplay of that company, though: "...Microsoft has proven we are probably the only company in the world that can offer great online experiences for millions and millions and millions of people." They might as well say that they're the only company in the world that can produce software, while they're at it. :-O

 » I think...

I hink those numbers are true. Ok, lets say there's like 15 mill ps3s out there, half of hose people play it online. Now why wouldn't they make duplicates? they're free, and while xbox live offers silver accounts that are free they can't play games so noones gonna make many live silver accounts. still, I think sony shoudn't be slinging those numbers becuz hey know this fact and they know that the live servers are always way more active than psn. now, i differ from him, xbox live isn't the only service that can offer great online experiences. psn, hough very flawed and inferior to live in many aspects still offers great online experiences. steam also offers great online experiences (though troublesome too).

Now to the person above me, xbox live is not gonna stop charging and devs dont want to becuz they know that if it means better service and experience then there are more active players on it. It's true that microsoft makes a ton of money and that if they charged half of what they charge now they still be making money off it but people still prefer it and are willing to pay (basically sony offers dial up for free, while microsoft charges for cable/dsl)

   Re: manchester7 - 2009-03-10
 » Damonous...

You retard. Playing local coop does not force you to create a new silver account. All it makes you do is make a new profile. Try signing in with that profile. It will ask you if you'd like to join xbox live. And no, Devs do not want to see MS stop charging for live, because then it is they who must fund their own servers. You really are just talking out of your ass, aren't you?

   Re: damonous - 2009-03-10
» XBL doesn't work that way

@Manchester: My very first experience with 360, around 2yrs ago, was at a friend's house, where he ultimately had to register 2 profiles online in order to get Gears co-op to work. Maybe that was not really necessary, or they've since patched it to act differently. I don't know. But, the very fact that you have to 'create another user' at all (even local, as you say) is stupid in and of itself (and is not necessary on any PS3 game I know of --and I have 50+). ....Regarding the whole question of Devs, dedicated servers, and XBL's subscription fee: I think you should do a simple Internet search and start learning a little more about how the XBL and PS3 service work. Try this, too: http://everything2.com/title/Xbox%2520Live Both services provide general matchmaking services to users. Both provide dedicated servers for 1st party games. But, do you really think that 3rd party publishers are not paying M$ anything to be hosted on XBL? ....Besides, what exactly do you think is going on when you have a peer-to-peer game, where YOUR OWN 360 is the 'server'? --Guess what: you're actually paying M$ money in order that you can use YOUR OWN bandwidth, and YOUR OWN machine along with the bandwidth + machine OWNED by your friend or friends. (Now, who's the ....'mentally challenged one'?) ....My point was that once PSN accounts start to far eclipse that of XBL, publishers are going to start saying, "The real userbase is on PS3, I'm going to develop there; especially since Microsoft just keeps an artificial barrier to online-entry for our customers, and stuffs the reward in their pocket!" Moreover, there are some distinct advantages to 3rd party publishers (especially those like EA who already are used to hosting PC games online) for having the freedom to host their own games. There may be *some* cost benefits to 3rd party publishers which M$ might hand down to them (but I doubt it, considering M$'s company history), but that will eventually be outweighed by the importance of the trending of the number of online users. ....Last thing: for anyone that hasn't tried PSN in awhile, they should do so now; Sony has vastly improved the speed of general downloads, etc. over the last year. So, to me, the whole idea that with XBL you are "getting something more" because you're paying for it is a crock. You're just paying, that's all. (Note: I actually own BOTH a PS3 and a 360.)

   Re: anhero - 2009-03-10
 » It's true...

Microsoft stff down most of the xbl revenues in their pockets, but to say that its like psn but paying is very wrong. First of all, download speeds are WAY faster, in fact a download that takes 2 hours on psn takes around 15-30 mins on xbl. The interface is very intuitive and runs more smoothly (from friends list, gamertags, ect.) Movies are lot cheaper to buy or rent, and the netflix service means very cheap rentals for a ow monthly payment. there is more content for download at xbl (especially better games). And there's more people...

I don't mind paying 50 dollars a year for that...

   Re: manchester7 - 2009-03-10
 » I apologize.

From your first post, you didn't seem like the kind of person capable of producing a post like your second. I was obviously wrong, so I apologize for being rude.

That said, devs arent going to go for who has more online accounts. They are going to dev for the system they think will sell the most of their game. Larger user base + more opportunities for sale. As can be seen with the shoddiness of online play of most non-AAA titles, devs could care less if you actually do play their game online or not. All they want is the sale.

And I think we've established that # of accounts does NOT equal user base. If were able to recognize this, I don't think the devs are going to be fooled. They are going to look at consoles sold, not registered accounts.

Also, do you think PSN is free because Sony just loves you and wants to do something nice? If people are willing to pay 50 a year for online, why wouldnt you sell it to them? Youd sell your piss for 50 bucks if someone wanted to buy it, who cares if its a ripoff? The reason is because 50 bucks a year is not a deal breaker when the console is as cheap as a 360, but when your talking the price of a PS3, and then you think "damn, and then i gotta pay for online on top of that" it becomes an issue. Not to say it would affect anyone serious about gaming like on this site, but definitely all the soccer moms picking out a system for junior, or any college kids looking for a dorm room accessory.

   Re: Kaden - 2009-03-11
 » anhero

I've downloaded numerous demos, movies and games off of the psn, as well as Add-on content, and none of it has ever taken me "2 hours". So I'd think that the PSN servers aren't quite slow, maybe where ever you tried the service, that users connection was bad, or just slow? Also, you mention netflix. The last time I heard, Netflix offered some A+ movies on the 360, but most of them were from the B Squad and Not worth a damn. (im not sure, since I don't own a 360 anymore) I like what the ps3 has to offer in terms of downloadable movies, and tv shows and their fees for such things. To say that the downloadable games on 360 are "better" I think might be a far stretch. They may offer more and SOME may be better, but each one most likely has their fair share of crap on that list too.

now, Aside from all that, 20 mil, 17 mil. Who gives a damn. Use what you use and if you enjoy it, then Enjoy it. ***** what these guys have to say.

 » Hm

Not every time. Only when it's relevant on both blogs. This is relevant to the Xbox 360 blog because McGil is using XBL as his measure against PSN.

Since QJ is in the process of change right now, I'd say this is the perfect chance to get some input from you guys. Should QJ stop posting about mudslinging between Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo?

You know, posts like "you're an add-on peddler, Microsoft" and "your PSN numbers are off, Sony" and "we don't care about either of you because we know how to print money." Stuff like that. And analyst posts as well, like predictions from Pachter and those other guys about what games will be tops this quarter or this summer or whatever.

So you guys like those kinds of posts or should we just filter them out for you?

I think you guys should leave those out. Not because it's irrelevant news, because it is indeed fun to read, but all it does is just get the weaker-minded folks to come in and have massive flame wars.

I find these articles pretty entertaining and I actually read most of the comments when there is flame wars like this going on, I get a good laugh out of it... I doubt it. You can get a definite starting point for MS by looking at the Gold accounts, as none of those will be inactive. Then if you want to say half the silver accounts are inactive, the active accounts still adds up to over half the total. It's unlikely, though, there are as many (at lease proportionately) inactive silver accounts as each account requires a valid credit card to create and requires the tedious entry of your billing information...and there really is no need to do make more than one, since you can add separate credit cards to one account if you share a box or have roommates. If they were free, I would understand the desire for multiple Gold accounts, but multiple silvers? Unnecessary.

Actually, during the heyday of the problem, speculation was rampant that the 360 defect rate was as high as 34%. ....which, based on 29,000,000+ units sold, would put the total amount of defective units at around 10,000,000. So, you're right: not 20 million; just somewhere around half that, that's all. .....But, you know, saldude2, if you have to get all sixth-grade about it: I think most people would consider the shape and physical attributes of the PS3 'sexier' than that of the green-lantern cream-white 360 hourglass (or even the chubby-stubby 'Elite'). :-) Certainly, I'm not suggesting that either would make a particularly meaningful bedtime partner, but ....well, y'know ...if ya' *had* to.. ;-)

Now add into that the number of PSP and Forum users which shouldnt be counted that they included in there 20 mill and the true number of PS3 Users is very low.

20 mil "failstation" network accounts is outragous tbh some Free crap service filled with n00bs who say "screw xb0x lol they pay for oonline we has free so it betta lool" but tbh everyone who bought a Failstation 3 with its extremly high price deserves it free and besides no1 in thier right mind would pay if they charged for a PooStation network account.

Sony should go back to delaying all its games becuase lets face it thats what they always do. also the REAL online experience is with the XBOX 360! LONG LIVE MICROSOFT!

your downright pathetic. grow up. i guarantee with an attitude like that you must be 15 years old.

and when someone talks like that about sonys online it means they are ignorant because they dont have a PS3 to experience the SAME THING MICROSOFT CHARGES FOR.

ps. i get to buy a new video game extra every year because i dont pay for bull**** that shouldnt be charged for anyways.

If you haven't noticed, PS3 owners are more older and mature than 360 owners.

"failstation", "Failstation 3", "PooStation".

These childish monikers (you probably don't know what it means, so here: it means nicknames) for the PS3 aren't supporting what you're saying at all (well, you didn't say anything CREDIBLE, at least). They just make you look like an idiot.

Fanboys make me sick. They're the lowest forms of gamers, just behind online cheaters.

You disgust me. GTFO

Id pay for a PSN account so that ruins your "no one will pay for a PooStation account."

Hmm.. I would probably rather wait longer for a better quality game, especially if it had committed developers etc. Killzone 2 is one example of how good a game can get with time, committement and a lot of work.

Again, GTFO

» Sorry - Not long Now

With High Failure rates, Multiple Disc support, added on Full HD format video, and a plethora of completely useles games, M$ Xbox 360 will live FOREVER, in the annulls of the worst thought out releases of a video game console ever (only surpassed by the Dreamcast - Which i own and Love, and play more often than my Xbox) Sony the Giant Killer (may SEGA rest in peace, and continue bring out games), grew into a Giant in video gaming - and the Collosus that is M$ is not going to change that, not any time soon anywho.

Yay for Native 1080p, HDMI and BluRay. Yay for well constructed and engineered games. (admittedly, some are very crap, but hey, everyone does have 'em)

What is that supposed to mean? That 15 y/o people can't behave?

People behaves different, that guy is a so called fanboy. He'll say everything he can come up with to protect his favorite company.

Also, I'm 15 years old, and i don't behave like that. English isn't even my primary language.

I find it funny, these posts about which console is better, each fanboy bashing against another. Personally, I own a ps3 and play online a lot, but that doesn't mean I like it anymore than the Xbox360...Vise Versa applies...Their both enjoyable and powerful consoles consoles, and I like them both equally.

   Re: s0nlxaftrsh0ck - 2009-03-09
 » @1ofamillion

you sir i high five you as i too like both my systems equally. I just hate how they just try to bash one another like this. The 360 definitely has it's highs and lows just as how the PS3 has it's own. And nothing is fail safe. There are things that happen to all systems. The 360 has the RROD and the PS3 has YLOD. ::shrugs:: big flippin woop. My PS3 died after a year of running folding at home. That's right...non-stop folding >_>;.

Regardless each system has it's points. No reason to hate another without actually playing it.

KILLZONE! Bam microsoft got owned, im sorry ms but ever since kz2 was released there has been an overwhelming amount of users getting on. many of them are fresh noobs that have been waiting for kz as a reason to get ps3, n now everyone is addicted, far more then when cod4 was released. n last i checked there were 23mil ps3s sold b4 kz2s release, so im sure it has potentially increased. so dont b telling me that half of those 20mil probably are not active...THEY ACTUALLY HAVE GOOD GAMES TO PLAY. while 360 fans r bored so they go n trash talk killzone n ps3

I dont know how many times I heard fanboys come in here and say "Jo, XBOX Live is waaayyyyy better than PSN!" and now I even hear it from a MS representative.
And the funny thing is: Not one single fanboy and now not even Ms themselves were able to give ANY valid point to support their claim.
PLEASE! I want to know!! WHY is Live soooo much better than PSN? WHY?!

   Re: Allstaraugustine - 2009-03-10
 » dude.

i completely agree with you. its because all the X bots are Nazis just bending over for MS...PSN and XBL are exactly the same besides maybe private chat and some podcasts nobody watches. i loved played RSV on the xbox, the community was great and the experience was fun...but i played it on PS3 and its the same experience. i was skeptical getting COD4 for PS3 but quickly realized it was no different playing that online than playing it on XBL... its all just a bunch of ignorant shannanigans

Re: Alex Atkin UK - 2009-03-10
» What does Xbox offer than the PS3 does not?

Some of these are features of the Xbox itself not Live but are the key things that I miss when I am on my PS3.

Voice chat (at any time, any game), voice messages, friends list available at any time and any game. ability to read/send messages to your friends at any time in any game. The whole way the PS3 works makes it feel like online is an after thought, whereas on Xbox I constantly add new people, send messages, without even thinking.

Recently I was watching a Blu-ray and received a message from a friend. I could not believe it when I realised I had to exit back to the XMB to read the message. On Xbox its literally 1 button to popup the message, the movie even continues playing in the background or a game will usually automatically pause. If the Xbox played Blu-ray I would be tempted to use it instead of the PS3, although the PS3 does playback video a lot better than the Xbox does - its the only feature I consider it superior for.

Also as you have to pay to play online on Xbox, people have something to loose if they are offensive and trash talking. It still happens, but when being banned affects you financially most people are a little more careful about their behaviour.

   Re: TheDude - 2009-03-10
 » ^^^

Then your paying 50 bucks a year to chat any time and send voice messages because everything else you said you can do on PS3. Its that little button in the middle that brings up the xmb where you can then see your friends and send them messages anytime, anygame. Rumor is that PS3 is getting voice messages in the next firmware update so soon the only difference will cross game chat which will be on PS3 soon enough.

   Re: NakedFaerie - 2009-03-11
 » update

Do a search online for the next PS3 update. it's got a lot of features that the 360 has. Vioce chat is one, more XMB in games/movies and a lot more.
Can you browse the internet while in a game on 360? Nope. Thats coming in firmware 2.70 for PS3.

Oh, BTW, its FREE to play online on the PS3 and the PS3 can do a LOT more than the 360 can all for free.
Ok, the 360 has more games but so what? Not all those games are good. Most of the PS3 games are good, not all but percentage wise the PS3 has more better games.

   Re: Justingraziano - 2009-03-11

Live is better because people just love throwing away $50 a year and PSN doesnt let you do that. What I dont understand is why Live supporters wont just move to a communist country and shut the ***** up, there dying for Microsoft to control the world, isnt it the same thing to have the government control the world?

PSN #'s are Probably BS, but who cares, bigger #'s mean everyone has to make their services better to draw peoples back.

BTW, i have had a PSN account for around 6 or 7 years now, since i got a Network Adapter for PS2 - anyone else had an old account updated. i also only have one account, no need to make multiples - the Misses doesn't play that much, and the Flattie Just wants to play (i also don't have a Credit Card, which helps curb spending on PS store)

Who really gives a f@#$ what Micro$oft think.
I think that micro$oft have removed the error code from the new 360's so it cant get the RROD instead of fixing the problem.

I would like someone to prove me wrong but so far I cant find anyone.

Do people care what I think? Nope. But it looks like I speak the truth more than Micro$oft at this point in time.

ANYONE!!! See if you can prove me wrong.
I would like to hear from anyone that knows M$ have actually fixed the RROD problem or just removed the RROD error code to not show 3 red lights anymore.

$1000 to the first person to prove I'm wrong.

I love my PS3, but as much of a fanboy as that guy is, he's almost definitely right. 20 million accounts, but most people have a couple to counter for different content in different store regions.
The solution? MAKE ALL STORES REGION FREE, we can get around it anyway.
