While it was already hinted at by a couple of the bigger retailers, it looks like Microsoft's finally gone official with their Xbox 360 price cut. The company has released a press wire stating that the console's 20 GB model will now be selling for just US$ 299.While that's probably been expected, the bigger news of the press release is their announcement of a new Xbox 360 SKU which will carry a 60 GB HDD. This unit will also carry the 20 GB unit's original price of US$ 349. Albert Penello, Microsoft's Xbox director of product management had this to say regarding the company's big announcement: We know consumers need more and more space to store the amazing digital content Xbox 360 offers, and we're giving it to them at no extra charge. No one device offers the depth and breadth of entertainment that Xbox 360 can deliver, and now you'll have three times the storage to manage all that great content. While the price-reduced 20 GB bundle is expected to arrive this week, you may also want to keep on the lookout in case the stores start stocking up on the new SKU. With this said and done, it'll be interesting to see how Sony will reply to the announcement, or what sort of actions they'll plan to take in the months to come. Drop by again in case we receive any more news. *Update* Microsoft's recently clarified during an inquiry that the price cut and new model are currently for North America only. Quoting their official statement to Spong:
The 60GB Xbox 360 and the 20GB clearance sale are for the US only. We have not announced any changes in Xbox 360 offerings or pricing in Europe. Related articles:

The ability to put ANY 2.5" SATA HDD into a PS3 says Sony don't need to counter this in terms of storage capabilities.
There won't be a price cut anytime soon for the PS3 though.

and thats why we screw over early adopters by overpricing a regular harddrive... damn satanists.

Just as well you can upgrade the PS3 HDD with all those required game installs.

I was hoping for a permanent price cut, not a HDD size increase.
Also, why is the elite still $480?

» 60 gigs is nothing
... its not nearly enuf space at all man. your better off with the 120 gig or just be amart and switch to ps3 and upgrade your HDD to 300 or 500gigs.... now thats space.
and c'mon $300? you can buy a ps3 online brand new for $300 along time ago (the start of 08 is wen i saw it happening),and with all the years of the increasingly growing technology.... ps3 is simply the best way to go.
no ps3 price cut..... sony doesnt want to lower itself to the 360's level. :)

» It might not fit
The 500GB 2.5" SATA HDD's are currently 12.5mm thick whereas the more common 2.5" SATA's are 9mm thick so it might not fit in the PS3.
The largest 9mm 2.5" SATA available to buy (at the moment) is 320GB (and Western Digital do one @ 7200rpm). This will come in handy for storing HD movie downloads which we will be able to purchase (or rent) from the PlayStation Store later this year but this is a 360 topic, no need for us to say "mine is bigger than yours" and swing our bigger HDD's in the faces of 360 owners.

Actually 60gb is more than plenty when you don't have 5gb mandatory installs per game.

It's only more than enough because 360 owners cannot buy HD films from XBLM. This will not be the case with the PS3 as we will be able to buy or rent. We will also be able to record live TV (cannot be done on the 360) so we need the ability to have much more HDD capacity than 360 owners.
The installs of most games are under 4GB on the PS3 (with 1 or 2 which are higher) and they are not all mandatory (Ridge Racer 7 as an example).

And btw who cares about recording tv? I use my 360 to play games and watch movies, why would I wanna watch TV on it?

i think it is a good move ..like a lot of people say no install of games and as far as having content on there why keep it on there if you are not going to use it dump it if you want it download it again .. recorded tv and movies can be streamed over your net work . if you have a media center it works like a charm as an extender ..and really every one that keeps saying you can just put a new drive into the ps3 yya it is not hard but you are more hardcore for saying that then most .. the people that will buy a 360 hard drive just want to plug and play they do not want to open the console and put a new drive in and what is it is the wrong type . the 360 is pop it on or pop it off and put a new one on and it will work right away . takes 2 min at most .i have like 3 TB on my home computer with music photos and movies all streamed off my computer . it took my wife 15 min to set it up and she is not even into computers .( it was a gift she wanted it set up to surprise me) . i think the 360 and the ps3 are the same dam thing when it come to entertainment .. the only thin a 360 is missing is a blueray drive .. and to me what ever i got all the hd content i need or want . i feel the 360 is way more flexible then the ps3 in terms of what is gives you the hard drive is nothing when you set it up to your computer .

It depends how much you are really into your entertainment:
Yes the 360 can stream TV or recorded material over a network (so can a PS3) but it is not capable of supporting LIVE TV. Not even the Elite can support live TV and on top of that, you cannot record TV on the 360. You can watch/listen to any media content stored on the PS3's HDD from ANYWHERE in the world with a PSP and from later this year (when PlayTV is launched) you will be able to watch and record live TV from ANYWHERE in the world.
The 360 is also not capable of supporting 7.1 surround audio or the latest DTS HD/Master audio being used in films due to it only supporting HDMI v1.2. Sound in movies is extremely important and people spend £££'s/$$$'s on sound systems in their homes. Subtle noises are just as important as loud ones (not going to mention the loudness of a 360).
This may not matter much to you or many other 360 owners, but to a lot of people, these things are essential.
You may see the 360 as a games console but M$ are trying to market it as an entertainment unit, which is what Sony did with the PS2 and PS3 and this is how Sony are getting their consoles into so many homes around the world, even though it's more expensive (initially) than the 360. Sony are focusing more on the games side of things now but they are continuing to evolve the multimedia capabilities of the PS3 with nearly every firmware update.
With all of those things mentioned (from a multimedia point of view) the PS3 does everything that a 360 can and so much more that a 360 will never be able to.
I'm not trying to start a console war, just stating the facts.

» Dear MS:
May be cut the price on the HDD instead? 200G 2.5 SATA HDD is $90 in my town or on www.ncix.com. If your 20G HDD is like $50 I'll go buy a couple right now.

» Bullcrap
This is total BS for those of us that bought the 20GB at the price that the 60gb is now going to be. I want some money back.
