scratching discs is a dj's job, not your Xbox 360's... - Image 1If you're an Xbox 360 owner, then you probably are aware of the problem of game disc scratches. This particular complaint, dubbed in the internet as a typical Xbox 360 problem, is far from being but an exaggeration, as there are users who have gone to Microsoft directly to complain about it. Some even say that the damage done on their discs brought about by the console is enough to warrant their discs obsolete.

Microsoft, for a while, lay quiet and unmoved by these complaints. That is until Kassa, a Dutch television show, persistently nagged the Xbox 360 creators about it. The show's aim was simple: get to the problem of the Xbox 360-disc scratching mystery and make those responsible hold up to their responsibility.

So, Kassa did tests on the console and put the whole process in video for them to have some credible proof. The result? Most of the consoles having this problem would be those produced in December 2006. It appears that there is a TSST drive with missing parts, which are meant to be there to make the disc stable. The culprit, therefore, is no other than Microsoft itself.

What followed next was an outburst of many more complaints pertaining to the same problem. With the customers finally finding an ally in the persona of Kassa, who had real information pinpointing who the culprit is, Microsoft then had no other recourse but to issue a statement about it. Of course, it would be doubly worse for them if they keep their mouths shut and pretend like they don't hear a word a whole bunch of people are already shouting.

And finally, Microsoft concedes that it could, indeed, be a manufacturing problem. Here's what they have to say about it through a press release:

Of course it is important to us that our customers have the best possible game experience and therefore we take these test results very serious. Xbox owners who think their discs are scratched as reported by Kassa, should contact us. We will investigate the console and when needed, repair it so it becomes a full functioning console. We will also inform Xbox owners how they can obtain replacement discs in case they require them.

So there you go. If you are experiencing this kind of problem on your Xbox 360, just contact Microsoft so they can fix your console right up. That's what they said they'll do.

I have my 7 month old 360 horrizontal, have moved it wile playing a game (just side to side) and have left it on for up to 15 hours and i have not had a heat or disk scratch problem. I am carfull with my disks though, i dont leave them on the floor or anything like that and they are fuuckin mint. Either im lucky or the 360 problem rate is lower then everyone makes it seem. That sounds right to me, since people wont make a threat posting about how their 360 works, they will only make a thread about how their 360 died and thats why it seems so bad. Either way, RainbowSix Vegas Kicks ass!

 » Only once...

I had the problem when I first bought the system. I returned and got a new one from the store and never had the problem since. The only thing the problem I'm having is that for some reason the 360 would say unable to recognize disk because its scratched or any other reason every time I play Gears, even though the disk is in perfect condition.

I don't get scratched discs. But I did buy mine well before December 2006. Sounds isolated to me.

Looks like i'm the unlucky bastard who got ****ed. It gave a small crack to my enchanted arms. Never took it out of the console when it happened. That may explain the disc read problems too.

I never had that problem but if a good amount of people experienced this then it is microsofts fault it is there console after all, the good thing though is the replacement policy, so it's all good.

 » 3 times for me

I lost 3 discs on my 360. I bought mine in November last year. The guys at EB knew me by name because i had returned so many times.. Not to mention that this is my third machine too. All of which scratched the crap out of discs.

Sounds like youre either a dumbass or a dumbass. people who go through more than 1 exchange are idiots or liars. having 3 is pushing it. tsk tsk tsk

3 is pushing it but ive also had a couple go bad due to scratching, and i tend to be very careful with my disks. ive never moved the console while it was running either

 » It's true...

I noticed my 360 had started cracking disks from the inside out about December last year, I had purchased the console in August so I'm guessing it's manufacture date would be around July? Possibly.

Any way I contacted Microsoft via their support email explaining I have never moved my Xbox whilst a game is in the drive and that this issue was breaking my original Xbox disks and my 360 disks.

Guess what? No reply. They kept quiet, refusing to address the problem.

Maybe now they will fix it, although it has just gone out of warranty.

Nice timing!

When my second 360 I had started scratching my gears of war disk and locking up constantly I returned it. I have yet to get another one because I don't like buying things that crap out all the time. I guess I should say that I sell them at Best Buy and I have never seen any video game system get returned like this one. It sucks because it is a great system when it works. Really a crap shoot I guess as I have freinds that have had no problems and lots of friends with multiple replacements. Thinking about the elite but not completely sure yet, maybe I will wait a while and see how they do with returns.

 » Figures

I've owned my 360 for just about a year now, and have never had problems with overheating (even after leaving the console on overnight) or the console scratching discs, although my first Gears disc fell victim to the infamous "move the console, buff a nice 1/2 inch ring into the disc" technique (which you shouldn't do anyway, whoever moves a disc reader when a disc is spinning inside of it intentionally should be put on medication).

The ONLY reason I can think of all these games getting scratched simply by spinning in the tray is that some games are "thicker" then others. It's hard to explain to people who don't own a 360, but with a "thick" game in the tray, the console will be noticeably louder (Gears, Crackdown and Vegas are my loudest games, in comparison to Guitar Hero or Test Drive, and ironically two of my loudest games are Microsoft games).

The reason why they're so loud is because the disc is thicker then other games, so there's more strain on the motor that spins the disc. Try it yourself if you don't believe me. I just found it ironic that it's Microsoft's system and it's in-house developed games are tearing themselves up inside their own console.

 » i got a problem

Whenener playing nba 2k7 halfway thuogh the second gane i play i get the msg that says unable to read disc. major pain in ass. it ocassionally happens during others but not often. A few of mates had the same problem so they bought ps3 no hassles from them.....

 » me too

I have the same issue with nba 2k7. I've already swapped my system so i'm wondering if its my disc. There are slight blemishes on the disc but nothing bad enough to warrant a unreadable disc.
