XBL has eyes for fake accountsIt seems that Microsoft is dealing with more than just the lagging nature of the Xbox Live Marketplace. The eyes and ears of QJ indeed reach far and wide, but sadly, no one seems to be able to confirm if this is official or if it should be taken from the saltshaker labelled 'Rumor'.

It's been heard around the grapevine of the internet and many a forum that Microsoft is going to ban some fake Xbox Live accounts in the next couple of days/weeks. With all of the content now available for download in the Marketplace (especially after the introduction of the XBLVM), companies have to make sure that regional copyrights are not violated.

Here's a Google translation from the German site which raised the alarm:

For approximately 2 weeks we know that Microsoft will delete in the near future Xbox live Fake account to serve to procure itself e.g. from US the Marketplace of contents. Unfortunately we could not publish these information, since they originated from a confidential discussion... As soon as Microsoft notices that US Xbox tries a live account with a IP e.g. from Germany something of the market place to download, then this account will be deleted in the future. That applies also to accounts with a gold membership... This is justified with legal and copyright regulations for films of the content offerers or indicated title etc.

Whether you fully understood the rough translation or not, the point is that the big MS will delete the fake accounts. According to the above statement, if MS detects an account which has a discrepancy between its IP address and that of the country stated in the profile, it will get flagged for termination.

If you think this is rubbish, you might want to hold your tongue. Whether or not this bit of info is official or not, Microsoft could very likely take such strict course of action. They have, after all, the right to protect their own assets.

sounds pretty stupid to me. It would mean that if you have a foreign room-mate who would prefer to download stuff in his own language then he's screwed... or say you moved to another country for a year or 2, then you'd have to use their locale, fudge that... Region free DVD players are sooooooo cheap and it's easy for me to purchase DVDs from all around the world but hey if American companys dont want my Euros then they can suck my balls!!!

it wont let u change locale on an acct once its created. i don't see how it will work for gold members i think they'd need to offer up a refund or whatever if they start canceling memberships for almost no reason at all. besides it wouldnt be m$ neck in the noose for distributing content to the wrong country, if thats where they say the are that should be good enough for them

Just route your connection on your 360 through a proxy from the country your gamertag is registered to and fool them. Sure your downloads may go slower, but for exclusive downloads from another country, its worth it.

This sucks!

I hate region-codes and similar things like this!

Cannot understand, why Europeans always have to wait longer than Americans and Japanese :/ or even don't get some of the content/ games :(

Extreme annoying!

This sucks, M$ still charging for Gold Membership Multiplayer and now they don't want us to download games we might not even see from Japan/other countries!

...Also creating a new account for a regular user, nolonger allows a you to use the 1-month free gold account (unless you just bought a new harddrive today!?)

Never use Google or Babelfish for translations. They said blocked/deleted cause they didn't know what will happen.
