MS will make a motion-sensitive controller if fans want it - Image 1Regardless of your preferred console, you have to admit that Nintendo Wii's Wiimote is unique and different, if not at all revolutionary. This has been noticed, needless to say, by Microsoft itself, and the company is even considering to make its own motion-sensitive controller.

According to Microsoft Developer Group General Manager Chris Satchell, their company is taking a "wait and see" approach on this meaning that they will in fact create one if there are enough demands for it.

There's no point building the hardware if nobody really wants it. One thing I'm not certain of is that third-parties are super-excited about that motion control - or at least they're not showing it with the games that are hitting the shelves yet. We're yet to see a really good game on Wii that really says 'OK that control kicked ass.

Back in February, Microsoft executive Peter Moore commented that they are looking to compete with Nintendo's mainstream appeal with the fun-centric Wii. He added that experiments with a motion-sensitive controller for the Xbox 360 are currently on-going in their labs.

Anyway, as far as Satchell is concerned with rival Sony, its motion-sensitive SIXAXIS for the PlayStation 3 is not that important. He even went on and said that it is not at all meaningful. "I think the jury's way out on that. I don't know if it's really that meaningful or not. So I think the jury's out on whether everybody really wants motion control so we'll wait and see."

Wait and see, eh? So the good question to ask now is, "Kids, do you want a motion-sensitive controller for your dear Xbox 360?

I think it’s a little to late to add it.

I think it would be sweet if the 360 had a motion sensitive controller. Now is the perfect time to implement this move on Nintendo especially in Japan. I own a PS3 and 360 and I think the PS3's sixaxis is lame. Nintendo is on the right side of the track with their wii motes and intergrated force feedback. Its time for SCEJ to pay Emerson what they owe them and give me some sixaxis (for free)with force feedback.Go M$.

 » They wouldn't "add" it...

They would just make a motion sensitive controll you could buy. The thing is, even on PS3 where everyone has a motion sensitive controller, the support for it has been 50/50 and lot's of games don't implement it well at all....I think it's a serious waste of time...

motion sensor is like rumble. unlike wii it doesn't dominate gameplay. instead it takes the much better approach of complementing gameplay. rumble has become a standard (and will be on ps3 once sony re-implements it) and motion sensor most likely will too.

and after all that stuff bill gates said about how a motion-sensitive controller is not what they want and how it can mess you up because it doesn't read correctly sometimes.

MS doesn't force it's ideals on their consumers like some other companies....like they said, if WE want it enough, they will...

Motion sensing controllers are lame on anything except the Wii. The Wii was designed for it. The Sixaxis sucks, I felt like an idiot shaking my controller when I rented call of duty 3.

you really need to chill

1. first learn how to type and speak
2. microsoft had the idea before sony or nintendo with the pc they just know its not as important for a video game sytem with the games it offers

its only worth it for the wii

they know how to make games fun and compatible for the motion sensing remote

Right, because you know you can just play any 360 game on the Wii

   Re: Matt (Unregistered) - 2007-04-03

On systems like ps3 and 360, motion is like a rumble, a compliment. On Wii, you can shoot things. That's what's cool. Damn, I like shooting things.

   by Gryff33 - 2007-04-03
 » Depends

I'm not an Xbox 360 owner myself, but I know enough about it and have played it enough to answer this question as I would if I did have one. I think it depends on how they implement it. First, how will they distribute it? Will it be an add-on to the main controller, or a new controller entirely? An add-on would be better, as that would make it cheaper and probably more widespread, especially if they include it with new systems. Second, how many games will use it? Will it be like the PS2's EyeToy, which saw barely any support beyond uneccessary picture and video features, or will it become as universal as the N64's (admittedly simpler) rumble pack? And finally, how will the games use it? If it's fully integrated like the Wii Remote, that's good. If it's used just because it's there, which is how a lot of games seem to be using the Sixaxis motion features, that's not so good.

 » Motion control is stupid

Who wants to be jerking the controller around while they play? Not me...motion control is a gimick and I sure as hell don't want one.

   Re: Devise (Unregistered) - 2007-04-03
 » ...

I agree with you. There are a very small number of games that work well with motion sensoring. The Wii has the more complex form and developers are probably going to struggle to deliver a good experience. The PS3 motion controls are restrictive and mostly pointless in all but a couple of games released so far.

Personally I think I would be happier with some light gun games.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-04-04
 » agreed

Not many games use motion control effectively. I think the PS3 has it just so it has something suitable to replace rumble.
I prefer rumble and analog stick precision.

 » no

i would say definently no, Im enjoying the games im playing right now without motion sensing. Right now, it is just a gimmick and not necessary. Let the Wii have the motion sensing and hopefully they'll start coming out with kick ass games to actually use it ( call of duty on the wii is horrible ). The 360 controller is perfect how it is, except we could use some colored ones like on the original xbox (blue, green)...That would be tight. Motion sensing on the PS3 is alright at the moment. I think the racing games should be tighter and more responsive. I hate playing motorstorm and when you try to make a sharp turn, it continues to go straight. thats my two cents...

ive got a 360 and the games on it a awesome without the motion-sensitive controller, the PS3 is good but the games on it are crap, they dont have games like gears of war or halo, they have basic ones that the 360 can get, but dont get me wrong the PS3 also has games of its own, but their *****! and the rumble on the 360 controller is awesome, the PS3 doesnt have it, the wii doesnt have it.
i would say no to motion-sensitive controller

 » New meaning to Wii360...

Not really great for M$ but if Nintendo can release a more powerful version of the Wii that can graphically compete with the 360 and PS3. Then I would have to say that M$ and Sony would be screwed.

   by Echo_Evolution - 2007-04-03
 » Well...

The Sixaxis controller seems more well fitted for racing games and flying games like MotorStorm and WarHawk. Somehow I got a feeling that the controller was specifically made for WarHawk.
So it'd be pretty pointless to add that type of motion sensing to the controller.

The Wii's controller is unique.

We should all know that Microsoft never comes up with their own $hit so no point in arguing there.
I think they should just stick the FPS controller they were developing which they mentioned quite a while ago.

   by nick (Unregistered) - 2007-04-04
 » i think...

well the wii to me is more of an interactive console, it was made for motion sensing controllers, one thing that helped it a lot is the design of the wiimote, compare it to the ps3 controller, the ps3 one would be good for racing and thats it, the wiimote's design gives it more....umm alourability, i dno, all sony did was add motion sensing technology to their controller, the controller itself aint much different to the ps2, but the wii, nintendo made up an intiarelly new controller which is designed for it. To answer the question about the 360, i think it shouldn't, unless all games that use the motion sensing technology have an option to use normal controls.

 » .... stupid

Microsoft are all over the place...

Microsoft: "Who needs HDMI and a larger HDD?"
- Microsoft announce an Xbox 360 Elite ... Sony obvioulsy made the right move on that part... still lacking the 1.3 HDMI Standard... stupid on their part.

Microsoft: "Motion Sensing is a gimmick! Vibration is win!!!"

- Microsoft announce possibility for motion sensing controller ... Sony and Nintendo obvioulsy Pwned M$ in that respect.

Microsoft: " HD-DVD IS THE BEST THINGEVER!!!@!ZOMG! But we can release blu-ray if we want to!!"
- Blu-Ray is kicking HD-DVDs ass.

Again, Sony pwned them in THAT department too...

I think someone at Microsoft needs to get fired... they have no idea.

How about Sony then?

We thought of motion senor control first.

Rumble is last gen. Rumble wont work with SIXAXIS controller.

etc...

 » Every company does that.

Nintendo: We have no intentions of releasing a newly designed DS, nor do we consider the possibility.

(Next day) NEW DS LITE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sony: Microsoft's move on have 2 versions of Xbox 360's will confuse consumers.
(later on in the year at E3)
Kaz: We will release two versions of PS3, a 20GB model and a 60GB model.

So really there aren't any surprises there.
Win or lose MS is here to stay.

MS is not copying anyone. they made a motion controller before sony and nin for the PC. Hell even the atari2600 had a motion controller.

the tech is not new and it is real nice for us 360 owners to posibly get another feature toadd to the list of things that our console can do.

we have way to many fanboys crying and what they dont realize is that crying is not the way to have your opinion heard or to convince someone to buy the console of your choice

no, i dont want it. I dont even find it that impressive on the wii, let alone the PS3.

Microsoft is full of copy cats. They really don't have any real ideas of their own. Take the HD option, they waited to put it on the ELITE because they were...well...lame. Who doesn't want to play in HD? Get with the program. And now, they want to sit back an wait for motion sense. Lame, MS is just a bunch of idea thiefs. They don't have any original ideas. Vista=Linux+Mac mashed together. XBOX=Dreamcast+PC

all this anger.. Just cause microsoft is giving you another choice?? lol.. Boy you guys are stupid!!!

Why don't they include one of these motion sensing wireless controllers with the elite?? And maybe built in wifi too?? coming real close to a ps3.. other than all the substandard parts and failures that will make the elite another obsolete release.

   by vivid (Unregistered) - 2007-04-04
 » Haha stupid kids

I love all the people bi*ching about "MS never has an original idea", you people really don't have a clue do you? I'm assuming your first console was probably the PS2. Please go through Sony's past "innovations", you will find that someone did every one of them long before they did, motion sensing in a game pad included.
