It's a tough one. Microsoft is looking really good. Everyone is looking pretty good. At the beginning, everyone thought Sony would walk away with it. We won't know for sure for two years. |

Silicon Knights is making too human for the 360..
...he is right that from a developer's point of view, the two consoles are about equal.
Gamers who have no experience in game developement and the hardware can argue all they like whilst quoting from the specs, but whenever developers discuss this point, it's clear that there isn't much to seperate the two in terms of power.
With each console having their strengths and weaknesses, some games will perform better on the 360, some will perform better on the PS3, but there will be no clear winner overall in terms of performance (despite what the fanboys may say).
Just my 2 cents. :)
why don't they ask ubisoft what they think?
anyone you ask is going to have a Biased opinon as to what they like...
In the end, it doesn't matter who wins the console war to everyone eles, it matters who wins it for you...You should get the system that best appeals to you, your intrests, and your wallet.
xbox 360 is out
if ps-3 came out at the same
time it would win
but since 360 had a head start, it wins
n what about wii
who gives a f.u.c.k
Nothing more frightening than an irate 12 year old.
when wii wins.... you'll see pokemon all over the place again....
You cant place the Xbox360 and the PS3 on the same level because the PS3 has a much wider market then the Xbox360.
When it comes to the Xbox360, its market is gaming.
When it comes to the PS3, its market is gaming and entertainment.
Fact being, The PS3 is an all in one box for entertainment as well as gaming.
You cant overlook the PS3s ability to provide everything a PC has in terms of multimedia entertainment.
Everything out of the box that the Xbox360 does not have:
Downloadable Videos and Music
Downloadable Games
High Definition Player
The Xbox360 doesn't not come with these features out of the box. Because to download anything you have to have a storage medium, a HDD, or memory card. To get High Definition player, you have to buy another add-on.
Look at the market trends. Do people like add-ons?
Would you buy a phone that had optional add-on Camera, blue-tooth, speaker phone, etc. Or would you rather spend the extra money to buy a phone with everything in one enclosure. Motorola for instance crashed during the era where all their phones required add-ons to get better features. some people would carry around 5-6 accessories just to get the most out of the phone.
Would gamers be in an outrage with the Xbox360 if it had a built in HDD and a HD-DVD player and costed $600? Or would you rather buy the premium package and a add-on HD-DVD player.
The market is changing fast. the HD-DVD add-on is doomed to failure because its an add-on. The general consumer wants everything in a small package, thats why over sized laptops have become a popular item. No one carries around a 20" Apple laptop, it stays at home on a desk. its small, compact and saves space. Thats why they spend the extra 1k when they can get the same desktop for much less.
When the Xbox360 and the PS3 become more available to the general consumer, the one with more features will be the winner.
do you really think the system with the most "features" will win? I really don't think the PS2 won (and is still winning) because it has more features than xbox, but more so because of its library of great games. I think that game selection will determine this generation's winner as well.

Some PS3 GPU (RSX) specs are still not confirmed. It's assumed to have 24 pixel pipelines, 8 vertex pipelines, 8 ROPS (raster), and 550MHz clock speed. But any of those could change, especially the clock speed.
Are there any other GPU spec categories worth adding?
UPDATE: RSX figures were updated to represent GeForce 7 based architecture with 24 pixel pipelines, 8 vertex pipelines, 8 ROPS, 500MHz core, and 650MHz memory. In other words, it dropped from 550MHz/700MHz to 500MHz/650MHz.
steve why do u have to make this fake ***** up if xbox360 was that powerful it would have been 700$ and it do not have cell
"steve why do u have to make this fake ***** up if xbox360 was that powerful it would have been 700$ and it do not have cell"
i am sorry these spec are right if only sony had this console to sell than it would be $1899 m$ have a good console it is cheap because they want it to sell you are a dumb***** if you want to sell something good for a outrageous price
ever bought a camera-phone? ever bought a fax-copier-printer? they're great, until one item breaks and then the whole thing is useless.
and as far as people regurgitating the specs for machine vs machine, how many times do you have to be reminded of the last generations specs having ZERO to do with sales?
its hard to argue that the ps2 won because the games were better than the more powerful gc/xbox yet the ps3 will win because it is more powerful than the wii/360.
First few months, Wii all the way. It's cheap with the Nintendo brand name -- and new. Nintendo fans will kill for it, younger console gamers will glom onto the younger-appealing games, the evergreen Mario franchises will push it, as will residual interest coming off the successes the DS has had of late. However, the controllers will wind up hurting it in the long run, as will the lack of HD support.
360 sales aren't as hot as they could be in the US, and the system is nothing in Japan. The games are mostly limited to US devs and a few cross-platform ports. Still, it has a solid grip with Microsoft updating and upgrading its capabilities with 1080p and the HD-DVD drive -- it'll take the PS3 a while to break into that. Maybe a year, maybe less.
PS3 initial sales will be relatively low due to shortages, like the 360. When supplies go up and both pricepoints are widely available and the library starts to get big titles from JP/EU/US devs, the PS3 will walk away with the #1 spot as the PS2 did before it.
Everything else is biased fanboy crap.
And there's nothing about your evidence-free post that can be considered "biased fanboy crap," I suppose?
Could someone explain how does Xbox 360 have more memory than PS3 when they are both the same? We have XDR ram semi dedicated to the Cell and RSX, while GDDR3 is dedicated to the RSX. I believe unless its the other way around. 256 + 256 = 512 and 512 shared for xbox 360 gpu and cpu. XDR ram is the fastest ram on earth i believe, it would provide faster bus speed than GDDR3 would provide.
In other terms 512MB of ram shared between 3 cpus is not necessarily a bad thing its just that only one cpu can access the memory at a time.
As in PS3 the Cell is one cpu with 1 PPE and 7 SPEs. The SPEs would provide the processing data for the PPE therefore the PPE is the only one that would be accessing the memory. Its basically parallel processing(wave of the future).
I don't understand computer ram/cpu interaction enough to explain which one would be better =P. But yeah XDR clocked at 3.2Ghz would definitely speed up the Cell's processing ability than how a GDDR3 would clocked at 700Mhz. But remember clock speed isn't everything and Xbox 360's DVD drive reads faster than PS3's blu-ray so i believe it gives the cpu more work to do. Trying putting yourself in the cpu's position with someone handing you work to do slower than you can do, but the HDD cache makes up for it. Lol...
The Xbox360's memory is in one big clump where the GPU and CPU can access as much as they want.
The PS3 has its memory split into two with the GPU having 256MB at its command and the CPU with 256.
Its stuck like this so the GPU could never use more than 256Mb of memory and vice versa.
XDR ram is made for high performance hardware. RSX is high performance so it probably does have access to the XDR ram. Eh, when Sony releases PS3, maybe we'll all know by then.
that's not true!
The gpu has access to all 512mb of memory.
The PS3 will ship with 256 MB of Rambus XDR DRAM, clocked at CPU die speed. The GPU will make use of 256 MB GDDR3 VRAM clocked at 550 MHz. THE GPU HAS ACCESS TO THE XDR MAIN MEMORY AS WELL.
Well, this is just according to wikipedia. . .
According to wikipedia means according to some fanboy who wrote somehting he heard online in the Wikipedia edit feature.

I just read an article at QJ site here which mentioned that Famitsu got the early copies of some PS3 games and reviewed them. Resistance: FoM got 8.25 of average score? Ridge Racer got 9? What hell are those Japs smoking at? Ok, let’s face it. Resistance’s developer always said that they truly believe Resistance will be a triple A title; and my understanding is that 8.25 is just A-, not even double A. I don’t give a damn to Famitsu, it’s just a small gaming magazine office which is run by small Japanese people in a small country called Jap@n, and I don’t care about their small review scores. I heard that Japs traditionally are not interested in first person games, so I guess that all the other reviewing websites in other parts of the world will give at least 8.25 or better review scores. Now, I have some ideas on how the next-gen games will get for review scores.
Gears of War will receive about 6.5~7.5 scores (graphics: 10, gameplay: 6, sound: 6, Etc); this game is f@cked up. This game can only support maximum of 8 for net mode because X360 isn’t powerful enough to support more. Call of Duty for X360 is a total joke and boredom itself (read on more below to see why CoD 2 on the X360 is a total joke).
I watched high definition footages of Ridge Racer 7 and it was, hmm, good. Actually, the graphics of RR7 is better than any other racing games currently exist on the earth. That game natively is run in 1080p (1920x1080 progressive scan) mode while maintaining 60 frames per second (60fps simply means the game runs silky smooth). Famitsu says that RR7 is totally satisfactory and wholly pleasing. I don’t like the style of RR7; it’s too easy and all about drifting though.
Now, it’s this new Gundam. This one had some nice graphics but the multiplayer mode is just a standard team death match sh@t. I don’t know how this slow moving robotic game received 8/10 score.
Sega Golf got 7, and I think this game just looks like a current-gen game and couldn’t have received more than 5/10; or this title could just be made for the PS2.
Genji? Kidding me? This got 7.25. This game is just another running-and-slashing game with no brains, there’s no depth to it. They say this game’s challenging for beginners, and from the footages I have seen, it’s only challenging because you have to endure great amount of boredom all the time while playing this sh@t.
Of course, in the end, review scores don’t mean much (lol, I wonder why I have spent all the last many minutes to write all the above paragraphs). Xbox 360’s launch games got very good scores: Perfect Dark Sh@t, Kameo: a-very-long-and-non-sense-name-which-I-don’t-bother-to-remember, Et Cetera. Those X360 games which got very high scores all turned out to be total jokes. The best X360 game exists is Call of Duty 2; and it can only support maximum of 8 players for online; I played it for a while and it became extremely boring; now my Xbox 360 console is mainly used as a door stopper while I ventilate my room; this heavy Trashbox360 console will not be even blown away even there’s a hurricane right on it; I’m so surprised that my Trashbox360 doesn’t have the function to dispose garbage in it – like a paper shredder. The online mode must support at least 16, or that game is a total joke; moreover, CoD2 on the X360 is so laggy too. The future for PS3 couldn’t be brighter.
>"Gears of War will receive about 6.5~7.5 scores (graphics: 10, gameplay: 6, sound: 6, Etc); this game is f@cked up. This game can only support maximum of 8 for net mode because X360 isn%u2019t powerful enough to support more."
When are gamers like yourself going to get it into your thick little skulls that the number of gamers supported in an online game is due to MANY factors, for which power is just a part of it!
There are MANY games out NOW including last gen, which could have supported more gamers online if the developers wanted too, but if testing shows that the gameplay gets worse beyond a certain nuymber of players, due to the size of the levels, the gameplay sytle, the weapons, vehicles (if any), player speed etc, then developers will keep the numbers down to whatever is best for the game. Hence developers go for a nuimber of players which offers the best gameplay experience online, not the highest number of players just for the sake of it.
BlackHawk Down for the XBox last gen supported 50 players online on XBox live! Gee, was that because the XBox is more powerful than the PS3 which only supports 40 players online in Resistance? Of course not! Obviously, the style and design of the game made it possible for 50 players online.
The same with PC games, where we see a wide range of supported players online between different games.
i have not played cod2 for along while because my disk broke and i am poor but me friends say they updated it so it is not laggy any more
actually playstation fanatics will drive the PS3 sales the first 6 months. if SONY can deliver the 6 millions PS3 shipments worlwide that they promised by March then that's a done deal. I already posted my personal survey before that if there is 10 PS2 owners atleast 1 of them will buy a PS3 by launch or by end of the year. (There is 106 million PS2 owners worldwide)
And based on my survey, all of my friends and coworkers (22 of them), 20 are planning to buy a PS3 before XBOX 360. And the remaining 2 already bought their XBOX 360. By the way half of them are XBOX fanatics.
So if you take that numbers. It seems that more than 10% of those PS2 owners are potential PS3 buyers. So i won't be suprised if the PS3 sold 10 million in the first 6 months. Again price drop is what majority of these PS2 owners are waiting for, and this will drive the PS3 sales even more. Peace!
Anectdotal evidence isn't worth anything, especially a survey among friends as they are likely to have already influenced each others decisions.
The problem Sony have now is that they are aiming for a completely different audience that purchased the majority of the PS2s. Most were purchased after the price had dropped considerabley (to less than a fifth of what the PS3 retails for). A huge amount of sales also went to the casual gamer crowd, for games such as EyeToy and SingStar.
I'm not disputing the fact that early shipments of PS3 will sell out, but even your 1 in 10 figure may be a long shot
1 in 10 PS2 owners is a long shot? are you kidding me? i'm talking about PS2 owners ONLY...not overall potential next gen buyers.
10% is a conservative numbers for PS3. if you still doubting it just look in the percentage of XBOX 360 in general. there are 25 millions original XBOX owners. so how many XBOX 360 sold this year? 6 million world wide. so thats around 20% XBOX owners.
That is my exact point. Xbox360 has sold 20% of the Xbox's total sales in 12 months, but it is aiming at the exact same audience and selling at the exact same price as the Xbox when that launched. I'd estimate that half of X360 owners were previous Xbox owners. Which brings the figure down to 10%.
You are estimatimg that the PS3 can do this in half the time. When the PS3 is anywhere from 150%-500% more expensive than what they payed for their system. Where there is heavy competition from other consoles compared to almost no competition last time. In a launch where there are almost no games which appeal to the masses.
Lets do the Maths:
Xbox: 25mil sold. X360: 6mil sold 1st 12 months. + 20% uptake.
Divide by two since we are talking about 6 months: 10% uptake
Divide by two as only half of X360 owners also had an Xbox: 5% uptake
If MS can only manage 5% in six months, I'd say Sony would be lucky to manage 1% (which is still over 1 million consoles, mind you)
To those who are throwing around the fact that the PS3 isn't just for gaming, that its for use as an entertainment center as well. I ask you to remember the PSP. A system with amazing versatility and promise. That Sony managed to screw up. There have been what, 2 or 3 must have titles for the PSP in its almost 2 years of life? The most fun with that thing was homebrew, which came at the cost of never being able to play the new games.
So before you sit on your horse and spout that the PS3 will do everything making it the victor in the console wars, just remember your PSP thats most likely collecting dust on you're shelf.
My closing comment about sony speaks for itself.
"Ridge Racer! Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidge RACER!!!!!!!"
You're totally right, Quantumfluxx, which is exactly the problem: the Sony fanboys know it, so they just say that isn't relevant without giving a good reason why. The best I've heard is that "the controller will hurt them in the long run" which is exactly what people said about the DS touch screen. Unfortunately, the Sony fanboys live in lala land and have blocked all logic from their heads when discussing handhelds.
I too thought the psp was going to be the shiznit of handheld gaming but alas, sony looked at it as only a media play thing. Seriously though, if you look at it from a gaming stand point: majority of exclusive psp games scored extremely well, even being praised for it's abilities sometimes (i.e. GTA, daxter).
And lets be honest, Sony didn't really give a $h|t for the psp. Why? Cause it's focus is on the PS3, and that is why you shouldn't compare the two. But of course after assembly starts rolling, I think we%u2019ll see some focus on psp games%u2014and they don%u2019t have a choice, the psp is getting raped sales wise. Sorry Sony, you%u2019re not Nintendo, colors aren%u2019t going to help.
That is true. The PSP's capabilities were well beyond that of the nintendo DS. But it only shows that being the muscle on the block doesn't mean ownership of the block. The PS3 is going by the same marketing gimicks that the PSP used. Not to mention everything about the PS3 is a cheap rip off of competitor products. Don't get me wrong I love my PS2. But sony has been making nothing but mistakes recently, ever since the rootkit it seems they have been cursed to fail. And the PS3, while being powerful, offers nothing "new" to gaming. They copied Microsoft's introduction of strong online gaming and marketplace, and half copied the Wii's motion sensing technology. The only differences the PS3 offers are in regards to media. Great and all if I'm in the market for a new way to watch movies. But gaming should be their core focus. Spread yourselves too thin and you get taken out. Which is what the PS3 is doing right now. And honestly, the majority of system buyers out there are waiting for the price to drop. Significantly. The PS2 is as popular as it is because it was priced competitively against the gamecube and the xbox. Wasn't the cheapest, but it most certainly wasnt as expensive as their two competitors put together.
2 to 3 titles is really in your opinion. There could be better games. I like at least 12 psp games and i dunno 5 DS games, but i don't really look at PSP or DS much anyway. I'm more of a console gamer.
Xbox 360 has already lost.
It's year headstart didn't help one bit. It hasn't talken any market from Sony whatsoever. In fact, it is not only selling worse than the original Xbox, but Sony now has the "graphics" and "online play" on its console as well.
In other words, the Xbox no longer has any real appeal over the PlayStation. What held the PS2 back (if you could even say that it was held back) no longer will. At least not to anywhere near the extent of last time.
The price... well its sold out completely. That's not an issue, so what is?
The big game library that Xbox lacks?
:|
the 360 has not lost are beatin the xbox1 by a long shot the xbox has sold 14 million in 6 year the 360 has sold 6-7 million in less than a year and plans to sell 10 million by the end of the year. i would laugh if the ps3 would even sell ten million by the end of the year they would not even have enough consoles
go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_seventh- generation_game_consoles it got evrything
look I'm not a rich guy, but I have owned Colecovision, Atari, Sega mastersystem, Nes, Genesis, SNes, Saturn, Ps1, Dreamcast, Ps2, Xbox, Gamecube, and Xbox360. and I'll say this ...... at different times I have favored one console over another at first, but as time went on by LOVE for games I've always ended up breaking the walls of "fanboyism".
Now that I'm older and the investment on consoles is greater and my tastes have changed I might not get all of this generations machines because it's just not worth it.
I mean think about it.....
you guys just argue back and forth all day long and gets nobody nowhere. You will be arguing about these things until NEXT generation, "SUPER ULTRA COOL PLAYSTATION XYZ" and "APPLE VISTA SKYSCRAPER X3" when you can jack in "matrix style" and lose your minds!!
everybody just buy what you want because you like it.
and stop trying to convert everyone.
the market is so saturated right now the industry might crash again like in the 80's. So chill out, guys
Videogames are suppose to be about having fun no matter what your playing them on.
easy, fellas
Aight..... here is the bottom line. You all know its true so just live with it. Japs own electronics. How are Americans gonna try to win a war that Japs own. sort of like cars. Microsoft is like Ford. Sony will rule. look how many people bought a slim ps2 that still had the regular ps2. gonna be the same thing for ps3. Nintendo will be the next Sega. unless some new pokemon kiddie show blows up and Nintendo makes games on it. How bout "the wiggles." Nintendo should make games on that.
THe console war is good and bad for comsumers. Compition is good for the comsumers because it causes the companys to work better on there products and lower prices sometimes. IT can also lead to other companys that cant keep up and fail to be notest.
Correction, I’m not only talking about 6 months here. I’m talking about 6 months to 1 year. I already discussed that for every ten PS2 owners… one of them will buy a PS3 within 6 months to 1 year after launch day. I haven’t included the potential buyers who are waiting for the price drop. I’m only talking about the Playstation fanboys here that will catapult the sales. So roughly that’s 10% of the total PS2 owners worldwide.
Worldwide Console Sale Chart:
1994 - 1999 = 70 Million PS1 sold
2000 March – 2001 Dec = 25 Million PS2 shipped. (20 Million sold)
2001 Nov – 2006 Sept = 25 Million XBOX sold
2005 Nov – 2006 Sept = 6 Million XBOX 360 sold
2006 Sept = 111.25 Million PS2 shipped. (106 Million sold)
2006 Nov – 2007 March = ??? Million PS3 potential buyer.
Lets do the Math:
Out of 25M XBOX owners, 6M XBOX 360 was sold. (which is 24%)
I believe that 2/3 of that 24% are XBOX owners, which is 4M that bought the first year. And the remaining 1/3 are none XBOX owners, which is 2M.
Out of 106M PS2 owners, in my opinion 10M will buy the PS3 from 6 months to first year (which is 10%). It might even go up to 15%, because the 5% will come from:
-XBOX owners
-Gamecube owners
-PC owners
-Blu-Ray potential buyers
-Customers who wants everything all in one box
Now again how did I come up to 10%? When the PS2 first came out, it sold 20 Million the first 2 years. That’s roughly 29% of 70 Million PS1 owners. So if you divide that by 2, that’s about 15% for the first year and another 15% for the second year. Mind you the price drop happened after 2 years (US: March 14, 2002).
So that’s why I’m sticking with the 10% and not 15% because of the PS3 price issue. Now if you are claiming that only 1% will buy a PS3, I urged you to do your own personal survey and ask atleast 10 (ten) PS2 owners.
Let's see... Saturn was earlier to market than PS1... Dreamcast was earlier to market than PS2 (and had clearly better graphics)... did they win?
Being first to market not always helps. BTW, so far there have been about 4.something millions 360s sold. 6 millions is M$ target for the end of this year, but how they want to reach that in the remaining 2 months eludes me.
I may add that the pretty cool Dreamcast sold about 10 millions, but still was flattened by the humble PS2. And I may also add that if only 10 % of all PS2 owners buy a PS3 (simply because they know the brand), thats already more than double the number of currently sold 360s (over 100 million PS2 sold).
So, simply by judging the strength of the brand, I'd say Sony is still the heavyweight champion here. And I say that altough I hate those ba$tards for killing my beloved Lik-Sang...
