Xbox 360 - Laptop Mod

That's right, kids. Though there have already been many attempts at making the Xbox 360 portable to some degree, we think that this one may have just taken the cake.

Introducing the Xbox Laptop 360 by Ben Heck. We don't really know if this can still be considered modding or if it should instead be called redesigning, given the fact that this person completely took apart his Xbox 360 in order to rebuild it into its sleeker laptop-like form.

Known for having made a portable Atari six years ago, Heck is no stranger to the business. However, he admits that this has been his most difficult project to date which took him around three months to complete. But the result of his efforts is indeed rewarding, as he was able to compress the entire system into a case that weighs 14 pounds, with a total thickness of 2.8 inches (that's with the LCD screen down). On top of this, his system is also watercooled so that it doesn't overheat in its small case.

In the end, his Xbox 360 system now has the following specs:
  • Uses a 17" wide (diagonal) 1280x720 progressive-scan LCD VGA monitor (for HD-level resolutions), thus you can actually read the text in Dead Rising.
  • Water-cooled with custom-built radiator. Allows for a slimmer main body versus the mammoth heat sinks in a stock 360.
  • Built-in keyboard and Wi-Fi.
  • USB hub allows original number of 3 USB ports for user.
  • All-aluminum case, except for plastic keyboard/ring of light/ screen control area.
  • Uses single customized "expanded" power supply brick for both screen and Xbox 360.
  • Breakout ports on back allow hookup to component TV, VGA monitor, sound system (analog or TOSlink) and even crummy composite video.
  • Size: 16.75" x 10.75" x 2.8"; Weight: 14 pounds (with water loaded)
Well, since seeing is believing, don't just take our word for it. Here are some photos of the creator's friend happily playing a round of Dead Rising on the newly-built and fully-functional "Xbox 360 laptop".

Got something you think is better? Let us know!

Are you guys idiots????

That is so lame!!!! I can only imagine how many times that guy gets his ass beat in public. He must have sex with the ugliest chicks ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

» Cant call it portable unless it can run on it own power

Portable?

More like Trans-Portable. Portable would imply that it would be able to be used anywhere. With no internal power source, that not gonna happen.

Its a good idea, but cant be called portable. This isnt any different then packing an Xbox360 and a LCD inside a backpack, just redesigned to be easier to transport.

 » Jeeez guys

Everyone always has to criticize.... Give the guy a break, it's called a hobby. If he wasnts to make his 360 a laptop, LET HIM.

What do you guysd know about hobbies... Sorry, you're to busy out there *****ing hott chicks and flaming a video game blog.

Good job.

 » @ 4

yea and a guy on a game console site calling girls chicks in the 2000's is really any better lol

 » Cool

No one on this site has the right to critisize what others do in their spare time. #4, the comment about the guy ******* ugly chicks suggests to me that your still a pre-teen with hormone problems who likes to act big on the 'net.

Anyway, it's quite a cool mod, though I guess I probably prefer playing on a proper sized TV. The keyboard is cool though, and I like how he added the wireless adapter to the back.

Why would anyone waste their time and money turning a gaming console into a laptop??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? THAT IS STRAIGHT UP GAY! If he took that anywhere people would say that guy is ghetto. He obviously has no common sense.

GHETTO!!

   by mor911 - 2006-09-11
 » @9

He spent what looks like 3x the cost of a 360 on custom mods and parts.... How in hell is that ghetto?

 » Well #4 and #7

The guy has been doing conversions like this for years. And he actually sells alot of them for top dollar. He has also writen a book about his work, and is very very well recognized in the modding community.

Do some reasearch before trying to bash someone that its miles ahead of you in his work and his knoledge.

and #4, your on a modding page bashing modding. I can imagine you in your parents basement, bashing someone on the net, trying to make yourself feel better. Its sad really.

Sorry i meant comment 9, not 7.

Very cool mod. It would be even more insane if it had it's own power source. Is that even possible right now? Is there a battery or something that thing can run off of?

If you retards didn't notice.... that thing is about the size of a briefcase. I wouldn't be caught dead with that thing in my hands.... I think some of the critics on this website are correct. That thing is lame.

it's got video out on the back for you who said they would rather play on a larger screen also it's only 4 inches wider than the 360 on it's side plus it's got it's own screen. I think 4 " is a great tradeoff for a built in screen.

 » BenHeck.com is Down

His website is down. I was there a few days agao and he was using a less bandwith entisive format for his site. So there maybe issues with his Bandwith. But the message that you get when you go there is a "Forbidden" page, as if the hole site is down. But knowing Ben this is no fake!!! Ben ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!
