Modern Warfare 2 - Image 1

If you're waiting like crazy for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to drop, then stop. It's not coming. Now if all you're waiting for is Modern Warfare 2, though, then you're alright.

OK, so what does this pointless exercise in semantics mean? Well, according to CVG, Infinity Ward has chosen to drop the "Call of Duty" name from their follow-up to 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PS3, Xbox 360, PC).

It's a bit weird, if you ask me, since the Call of Duty brand has proven to be a very recognizable one, even when it comes to non-gamers. Still, the first Modern Warfare's success would probably compensate for it. I'm also interested in what Activision has to say about this. Is it a ploy to try and differentiate Modern Warfare 2 from their yearly Call of Duty releases? Maybe.

Bigger news still is that Infinity Ward has confirmed the November 10 release date for Xbox 360 and PS3 spotted at the end of the Modern Warfare 2 teaser shown during GDC 09. The date's supposed to be worldwide, so all you gamers out there, start marking your calendars. If your parents give you flak for wanting to play a first-person shooter, tell them it's for the sake of your eyes.

» same perks? or did they make the game better?

anyone know if the gay perks from cod4 will be back in cod mw2?

This is what will be my final decision on buying the game. Martyrdom, juggernaut, and poor hit detection killed cod4 for me.

   Re: NarooN - 2009-03-29
 » same.

MW2 will just be another expansion pack, and it's gonna have a crap load of new, even gayer perks in it. What type of perk rewards scrubs for dying?

   Re: Orlyeh - 2009-03-29
 » NarooN

The same perk that penalizes crappy players for not having adequate situational awareness.

Don't assume that because you knock them down they're dead. Followup shots and attention to detail will save the day.

Also, I never had trouble with Juggernaut. I think, perhaps, I only used it with the Skorpion, but that gun was evil to begin with.

   Re: NarooN - 2009-03-30
 » the typical argument.

Someone bashes a perk, the other person claims this person bashing the perk sucks at the game. You can add me and we'll do a 1v1 or go on a rape spree in a public match. I can back myself up as well as anyone in my clan.

It's not my fault that I die when I spawn on top of a martydom grenade, or if someone dies and I walk into a room, 10 miles away from the grenade and still die.

I use stopping power either way it goes, so Juggernaut instantly gets canceled out.

Don't try to instruct me how to play FPS. Any COD4 scrubs will get annihilated in games like Quake, CS, and UT. Last Stand is stupid because you're wasting ammo if you shoot them while they fall. To "balance" it out, all players have invincibility frames when they're in the falling animation, so they can have a chance to use the perk. Both COD4 and WAW have these frames.

It's fair to a degree, but it's not fair when I pump a guy full of lead with my AK74u, and he shoots me in the foot with a pistol, somehow killing me in one hit (thanks hit detection) and then someone else hits him with a roll of toilet paper, getting a credit for the kill.

Perks do nothing except compensate for people's lack of skill by giving them tools that just turn the game into an RPG, except it's not fun. This player sucks at FPS? Let's let him get 50 billion extra hit points. This player can't aim? Let's give him Steady Aim. This guy dies a lot? martydom.

It goes on.

   Re: khaijiao - 2009-03-30
 » ?

naroon, how is it you've contributed enough time to COD4 to the point you consider your self to be pretty good at it, and even be in a clan if you don't like it? Ridiculous. If perks and online play in general piss you off so much why are you even playing it? So you can complain about it?

   Re: Orlyeh - 2009-03-30
 » NarooN, internet toughguy

I mean, if you're really as good as you claim, then why are these perks of any issue to you, amirite?

"Last Stand is stupid because you're wasting ammo if you shoot them while they fall."

Perhaps you should wait until they're on the ground?

"and he shoots me in the foot with a pistol"

Most likely he's aiming for the largest part of your body, that would be your chest. Ironically, if he was a good player, he'd be going for your head and you'd be claiming he shot you in the foo... Oh, see how that works?

I'm not a huge online FPS fan. I rarely play games online because I don't have the time. However, even I, had no trouble countering any of the perks. I did, however, quit about the time of the map pack for lack of interest.

   Re: papajag - 2009-03-30
 » ...

I hated Last Stand when I first got the game and with absolutely no other perks available. After my first prestige if someone has those perks and it starts to piss me off, I use those perks to get back at them.

On Hardcore matches I still hate Last Stand. But I do not want them removed. It's like an added difficulty. Seriously a lot of people you play online suck or they camp. I only complain about campers because then I have to camp too.

   Re: Orlyeh - 2009-03-30
 » Camping

There was this bastard with an MG set up in such a way that you simply could not shake him from his hole on a map I played. Knew every single spot to camp so he could not be killed. Didn't move from those spots the whole game.

Long story short, when I finally rotated onto his team, I TK'ed him the whole round and did nothing else. It was awesome.

   Re: NarooN - 2009-03-30
 » .

I played it for about a year, and that was with my clan. I only played when they wanted me to. I played FPS since 99' so a matter of me being good had nothing to do with how long I played the game.

As for the other guy, just because I complain about the perks doesn't mean I have a "problem" with them. The "problem" that CoD fanboys always point out is "you suck since you complain about them" which is not only illogical but they have no proof.

I wouldn't have said he shot me in the foot if he didn't. Did you even play CoD4 or 5? That's why they have KILLCAMS.

   Re: Master Chef - 2009-03-30
 » I'm with the anti-perk camp

Agreed with most of what Naroon is saying. Straight up shooter gameplay is the way to go, perks are dumb. I knew as soon as they started talking about them for CoD4 it'd be gay

Easy way to fix it without pissing off the perk lovers is simply add a mode where perks aren't allowed.

   Re: xche78x - 2009-03-31
 » im on neither side

i used to be a cs player back in 99.
there is always a contradiction to a move you hate.
sorry to say but perks will be staying and evolve on Modern Warfare 2, it is what made its multiplayer online unique from other games.
and all faults of an fps game can easily be countered when you know it.
i dont hate campers at all. one of my friend likes to kill em campers using desert eagle from a mile away. awp can be defeated by a handgun + bunny hopping.
in cod4 case just always make sure you killed your enemy totally before approaching so he cannot shoot you in the foot.

Every time Infinity ward makes a great CoD game and then Activision follows it up with a crappier add on then when it comes around to Infinity wards time they innovate again, so I think they are now trying to differentiate their games...

   Re: Yamagushi - 2009-03-30
 » Badly worded but..

The reason they did this is because Activision and Treyarch screwed them royaly with COD5.

Cod 1-3 were made by Treyarch. Cod4 was made by Infinity Ward. Then 5 was Treyarch again.

Infinity Ward did the respectful thing and made there own game from scratch. COD4 was a complete refresh for the series, it was highly praised and did a lot of good for the COD name.

Treyarch then pulled a scumbag move, they took COD4, Modded it, and called it there own game. COD5 is a straight up rip off, they didnt even try to make it there own, they changed the weapons and levels and slapped Treyarch on it. Everything down to even the menus are the same. Now if this wasnt bad enough, adding insult to injury Treyarch claimed full credit for a game Infinity Ward made and boasted saying it was better than COD4.

I not only support them for dropping the COD name, I praise it. I wouldnt want to be associated with Treyarch if I was Infinity Ward.

   Re: FlagBearer - 2009-03-30
 » No...

CoD 2 was by Infinity Ward. They've flip-flopped every year so far.

   Re: Master Chef - 2009-03-30
» You have no clue what you're talking about

Yama, CoD 1 and 2 were made by Infinity Ward, and were IMO better than CoD4

   Re: Stealth! - 2009-04-02
 » Yama

what the hell are you talking about? They never used the "same" engine or CoD4 remodeled it into 5. Stop being stupid. Unless you have proof, which I doubt considering I know the game quite well, and played it and it's quite good, definitely do not believe for one second it's the same game.

Madman is entirely correct. The reason for the dropping of CoD is so they can differentiate their games with the other CoD games. And quite honestly it's a good move I'm happy with.
   by NarooN - 2009-03-30
 » Madman.

How does Activision follow up with a crappy add-on when Activision is the publisher for all main CoD games? You must be one of the IW fanboys who bash Treyarch for making CoD3, a game which wasn't even panned by critics at all to begin with.

People just hated COD5 because it went back to WW2, and people were afraid of not being able to spray their asses off like 4, except you still can, and it has tanks. CoD4 did nothing innovative whatsoever. Perks and party systems? Done many years before. Fast-paced gameplay? Doom and Quake, boy.

   Re: Orlyeh - 2009-03-30
 » Treyarch fanboy

I'm sorry. CoD3 was a terrible, terrible game nowhere near the quality of CoD2. They figure that they can take whatever IW makes and just "add vehicles" to make it better which usually ends up ruining the experience. Infinity took the idea of vehicles and put strict limits on them.

You want a helicopter? Earn it through consecutive kills, and, even then you, don't get to spam it like crazy. Vehicles ruin shooters for the most part.

   Re: MADMAN-_-zZ - 2009-03-30
 » NarooN

No need to make people hate you more then your last rant :P I wasn't specifically pointing out CoD5, CoD4 was refreshing, CoD2 was a masterpeice, CoD3 was a horrible cash in on Next Gen consoles, and CoD5 is a let down because they took all of CoD4's new innovations (into the specific game series) and stuck it in WWII again, not that its a bad thing just that's why I call it an add on, they didn't do anything new.

   Re: NarooN - 2009-03-30
 » .

CoD3 was horrible? Your opinion doesn't equal fact, fortunately.

Your helicopter argument makes no sense as CoD3's vehicles were all balanced, and there were no air vehicles at all.

No need to make people hate me? I don't care what anyone on this site thinks of me. A bunch of commoners can't hurt my e-feelings like it does all of you.

CoD 1 + 2 were good because they introduced new concepts to the FPS genre. CoD3 was more of the same. CoD4 was more of the same, just set in modern times and made more noob-friendly, which led to it's success.

if CoD4 wasn't set in modern times, no one would have cared about it and IW wouldn't even be as well-known as they are.

And Treyarch IS NOT known for the Tony Hawk series. They only developed a few ports of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and 2x, among a few other ports. Neversoft developed all the main Tony Hawk games.

   Re: MADMAN-_-zZ - 2009-03-30
 » ...

How about you forget about the online playing aspect of the game and judge these games based on their single player experience, I know people that buy games for the campaign and never touch the online play but I don't know anyone the other way around, It sounds like you are basing these games solely on multi-player and forgetting what really makes them great.

   Re: NarooN - 2009-03-30
 » huh?

I played and beat CoD3, 4, and 5's SP components multiple times. What's so great about them? Forgettable stories, characters, and a plot that's barely there. You're always just part of some random squad with possible cameos from previous games and you just kill/plant C4/Satchels on crap and blow it up.

I never got a chance to play CoD1 or 2 on PC, so I can't really judge those.
   by extra2000 - 2009-03-30
 » ....

I'll just add what on every other forums' assumed reason...

In modern days, there is no such thing as "call of duty", there is only a "choice of duty".

   by niko86 - 2009-03-30
 » Clear up some facts

@Yamagushi

I think you'll find Infinity Ward made Call of Duty 1 , 2 and 4.

Treyarch produced 3 and 5.

Obviously Infinity Ward feel they have bled WW2 of everything it'll give and want to distinguish themselves from the trash Treyarch spew out. Even if it means ditching the Call of Duty brand which Infinity Ward made so great.

I don't know who at Activision thought giving the COD franchise to a Treyarch; who are most famous for the Tony Hawks series, was a good idea. But they obviously deserve an airstrike calling on them.

 » meh,

I'll just creep up behind you guys and stab all of you!! lol
(on COD obviously!)

I wish they would ban snipers, i always get hit when i can't even see them(groan!)

have to admit, thought i world hate COD 5 due the fact i hated COD3 due to it being a bad port to PS3, but the online play is as good as MW, and the story wasn't too bad niether!

   Re: Gblo6689 - 2009-03-30
 » Just Me?

I couldn't stand the fact that even though there were spaces in between the trees in front of me, I was confined to the clearly marked path never allowed to hide behind such an obviously legitimate cover spot.
Maybe it is just me, but I feel it is bad game mechanics this day and age to have invisible walls in a forest...
That was probably my biggest pet peeve of W@W... I don't mind campers that much because they can always be countered with the right tactics, kind of an added challenge.
   by Sw3RvE - 2009-03-30
 » perks....

they can keep them on but the hardcore mode should NOT have perks. if you have skill you shouldnt need a perk to get an extra edge then should you?

martydom is stupid... the grenade just automatically gets dropped you dont have to do it manually.

last stand is also crap... you shoot them and the are magically instantly laying on the ground with the pistol out in a split second. like your a ninja or something when your dying on the ground? RIIIIGHT!!!!

all i play is hardcore where people die when you shoot them. now if they remove the perks on hardcore that would be great!

   by PS3 OUTSIDER - 2009-03-31
» all of you contradict yourselves

you lot complain that people use the perks cause there crap and need them but at the same time you believe that just cause you shoot someone they die hate to break it to you but that's not realism the perks system is. every perk on cod4 is a possibility in a real life situation.
