NPD sales report for August - Image 1

Looks like Michael Pachter was right as August's results for console sales report that the Xbox 360 has surged, selling almost 100,000 more units than it did last July, over than what Pachter predicted. The NPD group also reports that the Wii still dominates the charts, and the Nintendo DS is still the more popular handheld.

All in all, the industry is bulking up. Last July console and software sales reached US$ 925.5 million, and this month it rose to US$ 933 million. A bit more and it truly will be a billion dollar industry. It's up 43% from August last year, when the industry was already strong at US$ 669 billion.

PS3 and PSP sales declined this month. PS3 sales slipped about 29,000 units in sales from last month. The PSP slipped more than 50,000 units in sales, but this is most likely in anticipation for the PSP Slim. The Wii and DS also declined a bit this month even though they're still on top.

NPD Analyst Anita Frazier describes Sony's current situation as "concerning, and the window for [Sony] turning the story around is certainly getting narrower." Here's a complete list of hardware sales this month:
  • Nintendo Wii - 403,600 (4.0 million)
  • Nintendo DS - 383,300 (12.7 million)
  • Xbox 360 - 276,700 (6.3 million)
  • PlayStation 2 - 202,000 (39.1 million)
  • PlayStation Portable - 151,200 (8.3 million)
  • PlayStation 3 - 130,600 (1.75 million)
Software sales are up 21% from last year, raising the bar to US$ 2.8 billion. Madden 08 ruled last August as the most popular game on both the Xbox 360 and the PS2, while the PS3 version is on fourth place. Bioshock sits comfortably on third place while Wii Play is on fifth. No DS games on Top 10 for August though.

How come all the sony fanboys don't comment when the ps3 comes in last? HAH.. remember after the price drop there were like 100 comments on how sony was having it's day etc. and now nobody wants to comment not even quixand. Oh well wake up and smell the coffee sony fanboys. Sell your ps3 while you can.

No need to sell though....it's not like Sony is going to go out of buisness...

However with 360 doubling the sales of PS3 and not showing any signs of slowing down in sales (if anything sales will increase with Halo 3 and the holidays) Publishers that were exclusive to Sony will be looking a lot harder at the 360 with it's larger install base....which just keeps getting larger then PS3's by the month....

Companies want to make money, and 360 is the best platform for that right now...

The thing is though, Those little sales means nothing. 360 is still losing against the Wii, And PS3 and wii is still outselling the 360 in Japan and Australia but 4 to 1, and if 360 has any chance of winning this war they need those two places. And since they don't Its safe to assume Wii or PS3 will win this gen.

Also don't forget there counter to halo 3, Cheaper PS3's thanks to the deal of Sony and Hon Hai, that will lower the SKU and ultimately lower the price of the PS3 very soon. So your theory isn't going to last for much longer, especially when the good titles like Lair Heavenly Sword, Little Big Planet, Rachet and Clank, and Grand Turismo 5 i say this end of the year will look very good for Sony fans.

wow, i guess your right. If the ps3's sales are falling them im sure thats the green light meaning they are going to win this gen. You am so smat, did u gaduate from the scools of high?

That you listed sucked. Have you read their reviews? And I played them at my friends, heavenly sword is the shortest game I have played, and Lairs graphics and phsyics engine sucks. If i shoot a flame at a ship the ship explodes?!?! Whats with that? It should burn not blow up like tnt or some *****.

Wow, I cant believe your idiotic rationalization led to that response to save whatever (if any) credibility the ps3 has left.

You just stated because sony has japan it will win. WELL, the us has a lot larger pop than your Japan does what does that mean? EVEN IF THE PS3 HAS HIGHER SALES THAN THE WII (Which it never will) IN JAPAN IT WILL STILL LOSE!! The United States now has the largest video game industry in the world due to population(not in ratio of course, on average more people that live in japan play games, but since there are so much more people in the us, it doesn't count for ***** in real numbers, oh and where do you live stealth, JAPAN??, I really doubt it . Oh and the ps3 has already lowered prices and once again the 360 IS ON TOP!!!

oh and lets not forget the attach rate, everybody with a little bit of brains know games is what keeps a system alive, unfortunately your ps3 has a few owners but they own very few games for their system meaning LACK OF GAME SALES, the most important factor.

Wake up and smell your burning sorry excuse for a video game system.

Please excuse the CAPS i feel i have to loudly explain to slow individuals in order for them to fully understand.
