Ryu Hayabusa - Image 1  There's been an interesting discussion over the weekend at the Beyond3D Forums about Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden 2 which hits North American stores a few hours from now. Some people have observed that the game actually runs on a different resolution setting than most Xbox 360 games. Specifically, it might be running at 585p.

"It seems 1120 for horizontal but need confirmation," says one poster. "There are no good screenshots for horizontal check."

So what does that mean? To put things into perspective, another post elaborated on the techy stuff and explained what it would mean to the average gamer. It reads:

For vertical 585 it's relatively sure and reliable. 1120×585 would be another type of anamorphic resolution, opposed to the other classic anamorphic 1024×600 use in some Xbox 360 (COD4, PGR3, Oblivion) but there are little more pixels in 1120×585 than in 1024×600 and 1120×585 is the better use of the EDRAM space that i have seen. It's 9.998MiB, just a 2KiB residue unused. Maybe it explains this choice.

We'd like to remind everyone that all of this is still unofficial, but we'll be sure to update you if Team Ninja ever decides to talk about it. In the meantime, better brush up those old moves because Ninja Gaiden 2 is looking poised to push your warrior skills to the limit.

 » Simple enough to check.

Run it on a Bravia. The Bravia will tell you the pixel ratio of the input signal.

Well the 360 has a scaler chip that upscales everythng to the TV's optimal output. So a Bravia TV wouldn't tell you anything. They are doing their pixel count analysis from screenshots.

I dont care what resolution it runs at, as long as it looks good. Major Nelson said the demo will be out tomorrow. Maybe QJ could post some decent news for once.

This person's theory is pretty sound though, and makes sense from a development standpoint....

360 only get's "free" 4X full screen anti-aliasing when the contents of a single frame are under 10 MB....so if would make sense to work within that buffer.

I think earlier games did native 720p as they were not intense enough to need to use the free anti-aliasing, and that could be done using the extra GPU resources....

Now that they are pushing more polygons and shaders and the GPU is being used at capacity most of the time, now they have to rely on the ridiculously fast EDRAM....which also limits the resolution of the frame and it's contents....

Honestly I think it was dumb for them to ever think they would push graphical boundaries on a console with HD resolutions......like we want more realisitic scenarios....not xbox games rendered at 1080P......and any PC gamer knows that as soon as you increase the resolution of a game it decreases performance more then any other setting....

There's no such thing as 585p. Those shorter versions are used with standard resolutions like 720p or 1080p (1280x720 and 1920x1080). You can't just take any horizontal resolution and stick a "p" after it.

as long as it's displayed in the required "progressive" (p) format instead of "interlaced" (i)...

and yeah 720, 1080, and 585 measure the vertical...
