Apart from the Metal Gear feature I posted about earlier, Famitsu also scored an interview with Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura. The Final Fantasy Versus XIII director shared a few bits of info about the new Final Fantasy games currently in development.
All he had to say about Final Fantasy XIII (PS3, Xbox 360) was that there will be new stuff shown at E3 2009. Apparently, Nomura is no longer very involved with Final Fantasy XIII, so he has shifted his focus onto Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII. For the former, they're currently testing the battle system and some "map gimmicks". There's going to be a lull in Versus XIII news for a bit, but Nomura says that once they get to a certain point, he'll show everyone something "very surprising". As for Agito XIII, the battle system has gone through enough overhauls that it's already taken on a form different from the battle screens we've previously seen. Quality is once again the highest priority for Agito XIII as Nomura wants it to be the pinnacle of handheld RPGs in this console generation. Even more relevant to my interests is a quick mention of the new Parasite Eve PSP game, The Third Birthday, which is apparently far enough into development that it's now playable through the prologue. Fans of classic PSOne games can also look forward to some type of announcement for the PlayStation Network's Game Archives in the future, although chances are this will only be for Japan. » "very suprising"...
What a 360 release? lol. At least they can focus on finishing the game once FFXIII is released because honestly I prefer Versus XIII over the other.

They did annonce it for the 360 a long, long, long and longer time ago!

I'm talking about Versus XIII. They haven't announced that one for the 360 yet. As of right now it's still PS3 exclusive.

» nah.
that would be the light of day.
Nomura is a sony fanboy. and i seriously don't think he would work on the 360.
its an opinion not fact but I'm pretty certain.

"The best handheld RPG"?
That pricked my attention so I read up on this game on Wikipedia. And no. It's set in a school and has a battle system similar to Crisis Core? No. That puts it right at the bottom of the barrel for me.
The best handheld RPG's are still FFVII (thanks DA), Golden Sun 1 and 2 and Tales of Eternia... Even though just 2 of those aren't ports and specifically designed to be a handheld RPG.

nope ur wrong, if u read the article it said agito XIII had so many overhauls it looks different from the screens we've already seen so the chances are its probably not what u would be expecting>.>
one thing i will agree with u is that FFVII, and golden sun 1 and 2 were kickass games especially golden sun

You should not judge a game before you play it.
And I did some research on the game myself, I heard that it starts in a school and expands later which gradualy allows the player to get out and explore the world. Thats what I heard... Could be wrong. Annyway that takes me back to Final Fantasy 8! I love that game! I belive that the battle system will be somehow different from the one of Crisis Core even if they share some elements!
About being the "pinnacle" for the system is a common goal for alot of developers. It's not a fakt that this will be the best game for the PSP jusst becaus they say that it is going to be the best RPG for the system. Everyone needs goals

Hmm, well the Wiki says that the game starts off in a school but doesn't expand much past that later. That's what I don't like... I want an RPG with scope, something where you travel the world in a linear fashion not where you constantly revert to the starting position. To me that doesn't say adventure, all the other 'highest rated RPGs of all time' aren't based in schools or have a central pivotal location.
They do say the battle system is a mixture between Crisis Core with an ATB system. That's a step in the right direction but if they have needless one-arm-bandit like bonus systems then no. A game shouldn't rely on luck.
I've still got hopes for the 360/PS3 version though.
But it's of my opinion that nothing since FFVII has been 'the best' of any console.

If it's anything like VIII I'll kill someone. Same if it's like Crisis Core, which was a terrible game. The battle system should be like KH, something that's fun to play. And Versus XIII is a ps3 exclusive, XIII is for 360 as well.

First, they said Dissidia is going to be the game that "you can play forever", and now this game is going to be the "pinnacle of handheld-RPGs"?
Look. Square's reputation is well-earned, but now they're just starting to sound like arrogant wankers.

» I disagree
Dissidia IS the game you can play forever, it's absolutely amazing combat system also makes it fun to play.
I won't automatically give Agito a 10/10, but I say if the battle system is similar, then it will at least be a fun game to play

well technically you CAN play forever, at least until your disc disintegrates or your PSP falls apart... or you die or whatever. Naw, I'm kidding, I know we're really talking about lasting value. Who knows, maybe it's a game worth going back to over and over like Smash Melee. I have high hopes for Agito especially after they switched it over from card-based to a more traditional RPG system. And if they want to make it the pinnacle of handheld RPGs, they don't really have to try very hard. They're really only competing with themselves.
