Peter Moore talks about the red ring, three year warranty, Forza 2 problems

The Xbox 360 has it all: powerful graphics, a great games library, online support, and downloadable content. These pros, as well as a multitude of other good points, has helped make it a solid contender in the on-going console wars.

Unfortunately, all the cons that have made it what it is today are outweighed by one devastating con, and that's the infamous red ring of death plaguing Xbox 360 owners worldwide. But things might be turning around for the Xbox 360 as we speak.

Corporate VP and Chief Xbox Spokesperson Peter Moore recently sat down with Gamespot and talked about what Microsoft is finally doing to combat the red ring of death. Looking at the measures they're taking, it's not only going to be costly on Microsoft's part, but also an unprecedented gesture of customer care in the video game industry.

So, what ARE they going to do about the red ring? Peter Moore enumerated these measures, and they are as follows:
  1. Improvements on the console itself that they believe will reduce the chances of the red ring happening.
  2. An expanded three-year warranty for the red ring, meaning that for three years, consoles who get the red ring will be repaired for free.
  3. Retroactive reimbursement of out-of-warranty payments for the red ring.
Very powerful measures indeed. When asked about what brought about the costly decision to put those measures into motion, Peter Moore merely said that they wanted to take care of the people - the Xbox 360 owners - that they haven't been taking care of very well these past few weeks. 

He explained as well that with the red ring being a hardware failure error, he considers it as not doing right by the fans, and Microsoft seeks to redress that. The program includes ALL consoles, from the very first Xbox 360 sold during the console's launch to the consoles not even rolled out of production lines yet.

This also means that Microsoft currently has no plans to change or remove the program any time in the future - which bodes well for the potential Xbox 360 owner who finds himself or herself hesitating because of the red ring.

Finally, Peter Moore laid the rumor of Forza MotorSport 2 bricking consoles to rest. His statement, verbatim:

Nothing to do with software, guys, nothing to do with the titles. It's a general hardware failure, it's not a title. I know there's been some rumblings in the last two days about Forza 2, and I scratch my head at that one because that is simply not the case. This is a general hardware failure. That's when the three flashing red lights come up, and we need to take care of the hardware.

hehe, and probably those new heatsinks....

Good move though....as IF any piece of electronics just dies and all it's done is sit on your entertainment unit...and you havn't duct taped any vents, or stuck a hamster in it....there is no reason the consumer should have to pay for that....I know europe has a standard 2 yr warranty on everything, wish NA did as well, as it just makes sense...

Thats awesome. Microsoft gets two thumbs up from me. It was inevitable that they do something about it because I am sure they wanna stay in the console race. Im still on my first 360 (as of Feb. 2006) So (knock on wood) I hope it stays that way.

I bought my xbox in 2005 without any extended warrant stuff.

Then they added that 1 year warranty to any xbox made in 2005 because they were supposedly defective.

Now does this mean that my free 1 year warranty that's already expired has been extended to 3 years.

I've yet to have any problems with my xbox (surprisingly) even though I play it a rediculous amount. But if say mine red-ringed sometime next year, you think Id be covered?

also let take the adverge 360 owner, usually on 2nd-3rd console... takes 2-3 business weeks for delivery of console? have fun pickin your nose and watching tv more than usual...because a adverage ps3 owner (lets say same game favs as 360 owner, FPS) will keep himself occupyed with RFOM Rainbow six, and the darkness...also lets say he gets bored, he can simply go to his internet browser, look up videos and such, download a few, (and lets say since 360 owner looks forward to halo 3, ps3 owner looks forward to home) so ps3 owner downloads and searches for movies, pictures, ect. in anticipation for home, same would go for currently no console holder 360 owner on a pc (assuming he has one) for halo 3,
